Tickets
All visitors including members and children need a timed ticket. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit Tickets.
Do I need a ticket for my child or baby even though they are admitted for free?
Yes, all visitors regardless of age are required to have a timed-entry ticket. Timed-entry tickets help us maintain safe and mandated capacity limits set by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
How do I present my tickets at the door for entry?
Ticket purchasers must present their ticket upon arrival for the time and date reserved for themselves and any guests, regardless of age. Tickets may be presented on a mobile device or printed on paper. All tickets will be scanned at the door. Tickets are only available in advance online or by phone.
Can I return or exchange tickets if my plans change?
Yes, if you let us know in advance, there are options for returning or exchanging tickets. See our Ticketing Policies for more information and how to contact us.
Can I purchase a ticket on-site at the Museum?
No, in order to create as safe and contactless an experience for visitors and staff as possible, we require tickets be purchased in advance on our website or by phone at 1-800-440-6975. There are no on-site, day-of purchases.
Can I visit with a group? What is the largest group I can bring with me?
Group visits to the MFA are currently suspended. The largest ticketed group permitted to visit together is 6 people.
Health and Safety
How is the MFA keeping me safe during my visit?
MFA staff have worked to provide as safe an environment as possible. This includes limiting capacity, contactless timed-entry advance ticketing, requiring masks to be worn on MFA campus inside and out, promoting one-way traffic patterns and social distancing with clear signs and indicators throughout your visit, redesigning gallery spaces and interpretive materials, creating physical barriers where necessary, and deploying hand sanitizer throughout the building.
What will I be asked for my group’s health check when we arrive?
Before entering the building, a member of each party will be required to confirm that none of the ticket holders in their group has symptoms of COVID-19. MFA staff will ask ticket purchasers and their guests about any symptoms they are experiencing and for phone contact information in the event that contract tracing is necessary.
What should I do if I don’t feel well on the day of my visit?
If you or a guest are unwell on the day of your visit or are quarantined due to exposure to COVID-19, we ask that you stay home and contact the MFA at tickets@mfa.org or 617-369-9300 for assistance with rescheduling your visit.
Do I need to wear a mask? What if I’m outside?
In accordance with CDC guidelines and state regulatory orders, all staff and visitors above the age of 2 are required to wear a face mask or covering while on MFA property, including outside on Museum grounds. If you forget your mask or don’t have one, a mask will be provided for your visit.
Why must I wait outside in the heat/cold or bad weather to have my ticket validated?
The health and safety of all staff and visitors is our first priority. In order to allow for appropriate social distancing and prevent anyone who is symptomatic from entering the building, the ticket and health check verification must be completed outside the Museum’s entrance.
Preparing for Your Visit
Will coat checks be open?
No, the MFA has closed its coat checks. We advise leaving valuables at home and bringing only those items that you can comfortably carry during your visit.
Bags smaller than 11 x 15 inches are welcome (no luggage please). Backpacks must be carried as a handbag or worn on the front side of the body. Bags in excess of 11 x 15 inches containing needed medical equipment, or for use in nursing or baby care, are allowed in the Museum if tagged at arrival.
Are the gift shops open?
The Linde Family Wing Bookstore and Shop on Level 1 is open. Other retail operations are temporarily closed.
Can I get something to eat?
Pre-packaged grab-and-go items, including an assortment of beverages, are available at New American Café, Wednesday–Sunday, 9:30 am–4 pm. All other dining venues in the Museum are temporarily closed. See Dining for more information.
Why aren’t all the galleries open? What can I see?
In order to maintain safe and socially distant visits, visitor capacity is limited and only a select group of galleries are open. Additional galleries will reopen in phases. Please see Gallery Updates for the latest information about what’s on view.
Can we stay in the Museum as long as we like?
Your ticket is valid until the Museum closes, but once you exit the building, you cannot be readmitted.
Will there be guided tours offered during my visit?
In-person guided tours are suspended at this time.
Members
