You spent hundreds of hours thinking, running experiments (or "studies"), writing your paper, and navigating the review process. Spend at least an hour picking the title that will forever communicate your work to the world. 6/6

As a result (again, please see the disclaimers in tweet #1), we are seeing a whole lot of stories of people from lower-income families whose A*AA mocks and A*A*A predictions are coming out at ABD, and who are missing out on either their first choice or any university place. /15

This appears to be the basis for accepting students to university in the UK this year. We can argue the merits of standardized exams, but imputing the grade of a standardized exam based on the performance of past students in your school is just horrendous

Just watched a virtual summer camp performance from my kids that was supposed to end at noon. At 12:01, after we applauded, the lead counselor said "Time integrity!" and ended the meeting. I now plan to shout "Time integrity!" at any meeting that runs more than one minute late.

Nice work. And it is time to start ensuring that all pre-registrations are thoroughly peer reviewed. If a pre-registration is vague/incomplete/not-adhered-to, the author should not be able to claim that the study was pre-registered.

A data conference organizer just sent my husband 3 bottles of wine to invite him to their virtual conference (!). My husband: "Oh, do they not do this in academia?" So if you're looking for me today, I'll be drinking one of the bottles and questioning my life choices

Really clever study. Viewed droplet spread with 15 types of mask. Suggests bandanas don’t work, gators enhance spread of droplets, but most other masks very helpful. Which masks best stop the spread of COVID-19? Duke researchers tested them to find out

This is fantastic: uses sound in addition to Bluetooth to detect proximity and doesn't give false alarms through walls. Just installed it and appears to run smoothly!

I bet surgical masks are more comfortable too. It's almost like they were designed for this very specific purpose!

Wonder how many papers on nudges to reduce borrowing track long term effects. This suggests they might do more harm than good

E.g. early rhetoric against masks almost surely did lasting damage. Would have been much easier to deal with supply shortages than trying to convince people we couldn't have known masks protect against droplet-based infections. Countries in Asia handled this much better

The problem with the "trust the experts" narrative is that it assumes away conflicts of interest. Moreover, public health communication is often strategic, which could reasonably be perceived as misleading

Not just obnoxious, but impersonating a federal agent, even by pretending to be part of an agency that doesn't actually exist, is also a federal crime

Here's the payroll tax one. It's a deferral. That means either employers will continue to withhold your payroll taxes and you won't see any difference, or they won't withhold (unlikely), and you'll have it all withheld from your paycheck when the deferral expires at year-end.

Dear Journalists, Trump’s new order on payroll taxes *only postpones* their withholding and payment. The taxes will still be due later unless Congress changes the law. See

I was taking care of a patient the other day who was very seriously injured. And I stepped out to talk to his family briefly and give them an update. For context, he was Black. I told them what was going on quickly and asked if they had any questions. And this is what they said.
