The MIES researcher, Fernando Maestre, has been appointed Scientist of the Alto Consejo Consultivo, Desarrollo e Innovación en Investigación de la Presidencia de la Generalitat, after having been distinguished with the Rei Jaume I Prize.
The Generalitat de Catalunya created the Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize in 2004, thus honoring the memory of the Catalan and universal sage. The award, at an international level, aims to recognize those people from around the world who have distinguished themselves exceptionally in the cultivation of ecological science.
Nominations can be submitted for the seventeenth Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize, corresponding to the year 2021, until May 28, 2021.

The MIES researcher, Fernando Maestre, will be part of the body that advises the Consell on research, development and innovation.
Until June 2022, experts attached to the MIES Ramon Margalef, Bioplastic Lab research team will study how to forecast the effects of climate change in marine protected areas. Environmental stress, eutrophication (the process of excessive enrichment of nutrients in an aquatic ecosystem), and the increased distribution of invasive species to which habitat 1170 is subjected will be analyzed in a climate change scenario.

On Saturday, October 31, 2020, a group of 23 volunteers participate in a garbage collection on the Agua Amarga beach in Alicante. This is the first citizen science activity planned in the SOCIPLAS project: Research and citizen science to improve the management of the presence of plastics in Marine Protected Areas.
The activity will serve to collect information on waste that appears on the beach and store the data in the free download MARNOBA application.
The SOCIPLAS project has the support of the Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the vice-rectorships for Research and Knowledge Transfer and Social Responsibility, Inclusion and Equality of the University of Alicante, and the Diputación de Alicante.

The IMEM will contribute to evaluating the state of the presence of plastics and microplastics in the Marine Demarcations of Spain.
Carlos Sanz, Researcher at IMEM, leads the SOCIPLAS project: Research and citizen science to improve the management of the presence of plastics in Marine Protected Areas, which has researchers from the Departments of Ecology and Analytical Chemistry of the University of Alicante, attached to the UA Bioplastic Lab research team, with the NGO European Environment, and with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
Within the framework of the SOCIPLAS project, campaigns will be carried out to collect and classify marine macro-litters from various beaches through citizen science actions. In addition, different beaches will be sampled to analyze the presence of microplastics and evaluate the impact generated by these particles.
Instructions for the progressive return to activity within the Research Institutes of the University of Alicante. Forms 1 and 2 must be completed 48 hours in advance for those who intend to go to the Institute building, since the EPIS will be distributed according to said request.
The Institutes Building will have opening hours from 07:00 to 19:00.
* The distribution of PPE will take place like these last weeks, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., which will also be the concierge hours. People who come only in the afternoon must collect PPE before 2:00 p.m.

The distinguished researcher of the University of Alicante Fernando T. Maestre has just been chosen "Fellow 2020" of the Ecological Society of America The Ecological Society of America (ESA). The appointment as "Fellow" is a distinction for those members of this society who have made outstanding scientific contributions in the field of ecology and study of ecosystems, communication, education and pedagogy, and environmental management and policies.

Almost a quarter of the earth's surface is about to become desert by the end of the century. "These abrupt changes occur in many human, natural and physical processes. Last Friday 1/03/2019 UN has declared the decade 2021-2030, as the decade of ecological restoration. The University of Alicante has developed theoretical and applied research of first line in this discipline for more than two decades and has master and phD programs oriented to the same one, so that we are particularly pleasant this news. In addition, UA will organize the next European Restoration Congress (SERE September 2020). Hopefully it will serve to enhance the restoration in Spain and the world, and thus protect biodiversity, improve the provision of ecosystem services and quality of life, and step, improve the quality of restoration projects and consolidate this professional sector.
