Attending: @sunsand187, @ashiquzzaman, @kimberly.lipari

Slack Thread: https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C037W5S7X/p1616515310146700

What was covered:

  1. Updates for the group
  2. Goals for the year
  3. Needs of the group
  4. Open floor discussion

Updates for the group

Currently we are shifting to creating Learn WordPress videos for parents, organizers, guardians, and educators. We have a list of videos we want to create and are looking for volunteers that can help us create them. We currently have 3 videos on the list.

Goals for the Year

We are looking to grow the team! @kimberly.lipari@camikaos (she/her) and I are looking to grow the team. If you have any interest in helping the next generation (you don’t have to be hanging out with them, just creating content for parents) reach out to us and let us know what strikes your fancy. We need:

  • Research – laws surrounding minors at events globally
  • Writing – arts and crafts documentation, WordPress basics documentation, Parental Resources Documents
  • Video Creation – how to videos for Parents to get involved with their kids, Encouraging Videos for organizers, and videos for educators
  • Editing – grammar, spell check, and general flow proofreaders/editors

Needs for the group

Ultimately, our biggest group need is to get more volunteers that want to help with the work. Once onboard we can discuss other group needs.

Open Floor Discussion

I know there are others who may not have been able to join today and that is okay. You can leave your comments in threads and I will add them to the P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/. recap post tomorrow afternoon.

With that I will wrap up the meeting. Thank you so much for being here and for all your time! This next year is going to make it so much better for adults that want to help youth grow their knowledge!

Recap of the Diverse Speaker Training group (#WPDiversity) on March 24, 2021

Attending: @jillbinder @onealtr @tantienhime @katiejrichards @angelasjin

Start: https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C037W5S7X/p1616605145162500

@katiejrichards is nearly done with the “Creating A Welcoming and Diverse Space” workshop transcript. Delivering the Spanish translations for “Diverse Speakers workshop” to #training is done, and if there is anything more she will take care of it.

We are inviting more people to run our workshop so that we can cover more days, times, and parts of the world:

  • @onealtr is going to run an Interactive, Transformational Watch party of our “Own your expertise and find a topic” workshop for the Philippines and surrounding areas in early May. He is doing the pre-work of reviewing the material, and will chat with the communities about the workshop and set a date with them.
  • @volkswagenchick is going to run it sometime after April.
  • @wpfangirl is going to run it sometime – maybe the summer.

Our workshop makes WordPress a more diverse, better, and stronger place. If you are interested in contributing to this and learning about running our workshop, please reach out to @jillbinder.

@onealtr is going to run our working group meeting on April 28th while I am away. @angelasjin will support him.

Outreach to WordCamp Mentors

Calling all Community Deputies! Would you be interested in helping me with some outreach to our current roster of WordCamp mentors? With all the changes to the program this past year, it seems timely to check in with our mentors to see if they are still interested in mentoring WordCamps and where we can better support them.

You do need to be a current Community Deputy in order to help with this outreach.

The current plan is to create a survey to centralize our outreach. Deputies will come up with the final questions to ask, but I imagine questions like the following will be included:

  • How many WordCamps have you mentored in the past year?
  • Are you interested in continuing to mentor WordCamps?
  • What kind of resources or training can we provide you with to better support you as a mentor?

After we’ve received responses, we’ll write up a summary for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. mentors, similar to the Community Deputy check-in results and sum-up. As part of this outreach, we will support mentors in offboarding if they no longer want to be a mentor.

I estimate that this will probably take around one to two months to complete, and around 1-2 hours of Deputy time a week. In addition to being a Deputy, it will help if you already have existing relationships with other mentors, but if you don’t, that’s ok too. This is a great exercise for any Deputy who wants to help with outreach. Please let me know if you are interested and available to help by leaving a comment below, or by sending me a DM in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.. Thanks in advance for your help!

Not a current Community Deputy but want to become one? Awesome! Find out more here. Or, want to become a WordCamp mentor? Double awesome! Learn more about that here.

Announcement: Review of WordCamp sites without a tracker item – removal of some old WordCamp sites

Already some time ago, @iandunn handed me the list of WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites missing their counterpart in the WordCamp tracker.

Some of these sites are for WordCamps that did never take place at the end. Some sites are for WordCamps that have taken place well before the WordCamp tracker was introduced or do lack their counterpart for some other reason

I’ve gone thru the list of 60 sites and checked their status. Based on that, my proposal is that we:

  1. Create the counterpart post in the WordCamp tracker to backfill the history, with simple details like location, lead organiser (if available) and dates

OR

  1. Remove the WordCamp site, as the event never happened or the page links to a domain that does not work/isn’t controlled by WPCS or WPF.

Some of these sites go back to the early years of WordCamps, to 2008. More eyes on this list and determining the right action for the site would be highly appreciated, in case there is some historical information that isn’t available from the site.

The list of sites and proposed actions is here.

Please leave a comment on this post if you think that the proposed action in some of the sites is wrong. The discussion will be open until 2021-04-23 after which we’ll start to remove the sites and creating counterparts in the tracker. If you’d like to help with creating these counterparts, let me know in the comments!

Tuesday Trainings: I miss giving talks at WordCamps

This year we’ve changed the format of Tuesday Trainings to better get directly at the issues that seem to be on the minds of folks in our community. How are we doing that? Great question. We’re either seeking to answer commonly asked questions or address commonly heard complaints, concerns, and confusions. If there’s a question you’d like to see answered or a topic you’d like to see discussed please share it in the comments or email me at [email protected] with the subject line Tuesday Trainings. Now onto this week’s topic.

I miss giving talks at WordCamps 🙁

Yeah. I do too. Speaking at WordCamps, even just attending them and speaking with fellow attendees, is always a highlight for me. I love being able to spend time in such an amazing atmosphere with great people and share my knowledge, expertise, or just curiosity with those around me. This pandemic has seen the longest stretch of time I’ve not been to a WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. since WordCamps were invented. It’s incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to recreate that level of camaraderie in an online space.

Okay that was just me saying I feel it too. I wanted to make sure you knew I was on the same page with you. But now let’s seek a solution.

Is there anything I can do that is like giving a WordCamp talk while we’re still online only?

First I just want to say that you can still apply to give a talk at an online WordCamp. I know it isn’t the same. I know it feels different. But it’s still a good way to share your expertise with others. So that’s an option. For me though it is not THE option. It’s not the one that makes my heart beat harder as I think about connecting with the community.

For me that has been speaking at WordPress meetups. You may be asking yourself what the difference is. Great question. Fantastic question really. What is the difference and why does it matter?

You see we used to have A LOT of WordCamps every year. Hundreds in fact. There were very few weekends throughout the year when there actually wasn’t a WordCamp happening. In fact most weekends if you wanted to attend a WordCamp you had your pick of two or more. Now the WordCamp calendar is all but empty save for online, often regional WordCamps.

But do you know what there are a lot of? WordPress Meetups. There are WordPress meetups every week. And most of those meetups are looking for speakers. And while these events are still happening online in most of the world, they have started to much more closely resemble the feel of small grassroots WordCamps. The audience is smaller and more interactive which gives you a better chance to connect with individuals and get to know them. There is time and allowance for Q&A and audience discussion. There are a bunch of people who know each other from an existing community. But even with all that local togetherness it’s not surprising to see a familiar place from somewhere else in the country or even the world. But somehow you also get to feel yourself connecting with the community you’re talking with. For me it’s been a rediscovery of my love of connecting with WordPress communities.

Is there anything else I can try, maybe something even more interactive?

Well I’m glad you asked. Because there is but you have to stick with me for a moment because it might not seem, at first, like I’m right. But I assure you I am.

Have  you thought about contributing to Learn WordPress

I know, it’s not an event. And it’s new. And you have to apply and do a whole thing to make it happen but hear me out.

You can have all the fun of presenting without the pressure of being perfect in one take. Your message can get in front of an infinite number of people because, just like a WordCamp talk, these videos are uploaded to WordPress.tv for all the community to enjoy. And while I realize none of this is interactive and it might not have that community feel to you, the part that comes next is all interaction.

Once your Learn session is posted you can organize a discussion group to talk about your session with those who have attended it. Or you can skip the whole part where you create a talk and you can find a topic you’re interested in and lead a discussion group with others about it. Even if the talk isn’t one that you created.

But it’s still not a WordCamp talk…

I know. These are not perfect solutions. But right now more than ever I’m feeling the truth of perfection being the enemy of good. If you miss the WordPress community it might just be time for you to get out there in the best way you can right now.

Whether that’s attending a meetupMeetup All local/regional gatherings that are officially a part of the WordPress world but are not WordCamps are organized through https://www.meetup.com/. A meetup is typically a chance for local WordPress users to get together and share new ideas and seek help from one another. Searching for ‘WordPress’ on meetup.com will help you find options in your area., speaking at one, creating a workshop, hosting a discussion group, or just reaching out to others in WordPress SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. to see what they’re up to. Let’s make sure we’re all staying connected and keeping the spirit behind the WordPress community alive.

What can I do about it RIGHT NOW?

If you’re interested in speaking at some meetups leave a comment below to let WordPress Meetup organizers know what you’d like to speak on. Teams are always looking for speakers, this could be a chance to make it easy on them.

Recap of Contributor Working Group on Mar. 17, 2021

In attendance: @amethystanswers

Meeting start: https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C037W5S7X/p1616007703004500

Agenda: https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/03/17/contributor-working-group-agenda-march-17-2021/

Group Checkins

@daisyo is looking for some volunteers to compile some questions that we might be able to ask organizers of previous contributor events (especially completely online events like WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. India.) The goal would be to help us in discussing what worked and didn’t work for these past events.

  • Input from @annezazu : Might be good to ask questions like “What resources would be helpful from your POV to engage people after a WordCamp?”, Something around desired resources AND something about what pain points/questions people get.

@annezazu my only update is the Codeable doc that I shared with the group. I plan to continue to see what we can learn from trying to create a pathway for Codeable devs to get involved in community efforts as a bit of a large “betaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process.” group.

@amethystanswers created a simple Google doc with the links to our meeting recaps: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AOL6m_dB6TRxF7GCK1Y2wS694FVhQh2dGmi0EeVeGKc/edit?usp=sharing

Highlights

Tuesday Trainings
Two new episodes are out, go read ’em! Escpecially the one that Kevin wrote, I just found out that my speaker/sponsor has a plugin that is not 100% GPL. What do I do? is hugely valuable reinder to everyone.

2021 Financial Update for the WordPress Community
Harmony provided an update on our financial health after we gracefully weathered the storm that was 2020. In summary, WPCS began the 2021 year with just over US$1.3M on hand from which approximately US$465K is owed to the Global Sponsors for their future sponsorships. WPCS also has approximately US$305K in prepaid expenses to various vendors. Cautious spending of WPCS money will still be necessary for the foreseeable future.

Proposal: A WordPress Project Contributor Handbook
Josepha posted a proposal about creating a big “WordPress Project Handbook”.

New and ongoing discussions

Daylight Savings Time adjustment
DST is here soon again and some parts of the world are moving their clocks. In previous years, we have moved the meeting times accordingly one hour forward after EU/UK has started the DST on 2021-03-29. What we should do this year, move the meeting times like we have done in the past or stick with the same UTC times regardless of DST?

Proposal to improve the organizing experience for online WordCamps
Over the past year, WordPress event organizers around the globe have learned so much about the process of organizing WordCamps, meetups, and other events online because we had to do that to keep going. Now that we’ve had a year to come together in this new way several of us have seen common obstacles. We want to tackle the three most common ones; tools, documentation and money. Please leave your feedback and share this post with everyone who organised online WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. during 2020, their feedback would help a lot!

Request for Feedback: Community Team Stats Dashboard
MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. team posted an idea about team-specific dashboards asking would help us with our job and what kind of metrics would be helpful. Instead of figuring out the ideas metrics for our team in the comments of the original post and making the comments threads long over there, let’s have the initial discussion in our own P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org/. blog.

Request for feedback: Review for the dedicated deputy communication channel
The private #community-deputies SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel was created in December, so it’s time for the first review as we agreed. If you are active deputy, please share your thoughts. The post is also an open invitation for all community members to ask questions about the channel, which could help us with the review. If the result of the review looks like there’s no justification for private working space for deputies, the channel will be shut off at the beginning of April. In case the experiment continues, we will do another public review in three months.

Open floor

Opportunity to bring things into discussions that weren’t on the meeting agenda and if anyone has something they would like to share with the team. If you have a topic in mind before the meeting, please add it into the comments of this post.

Hope to see you on Thursday, either on Asia-Pacific / EMEA or Americas friendly version of the meeting!

Preliminary agenda was put together in collaboration of @sippis and @kcristiano.
