Learn WordPress Handbook

  • The first draft of the Learn WordPress Handbook is published!
  • This Handbook focuses on how to contribute workshops, courses, and discussion groups to Learn WordPress.
  • The current draft is based on the feedback and contributions from the recent Learn WordPress Handbook sprint.
  • For next steps, we still need contributors who can help with reviewing the Handbook, especially:
    • Checking for any typos, errors, or inconsistencies.
    • Highlighting any material that is missing or unclear.
  • The Training team is also working on updating the Training Handbook, which focuses on lesson plan development.
    • For volunteers interested in helping to review and update the Training Handbook, please share a message in the #training Slack channel for access to the shared Google Doc.

Slides Plugin

  • The Training team has been exploring a possible plugin to help add slides functionality to Learn WordPress for lesson plans since moving lesson plans over from GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/.
  • For the Training team, this would provide an accessible, open-source tool to help the team continue to add new slides and resources to lesson plans.
  • Requiring the pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party for workshop-related slides may act as a barrier to contribution, but it could be added as a resource in the Learn WordPress Handbook to help workshop presenters with selecting tools (similar to how tools for recording workshops are shared).

Training’s March 2021 Sprint

  • The Training team is exploring the use of sprints for planning and has published the plan for March 2021.
  • For the Learn WordPress Working Group, there’s overlap for both teams in the “Sprint Team Functionality Goals” and “Sprint Functionality of Learn Goals.”
  • @evarlese also added a meta-learn Roadmap to the Learn WordPress Trello.
    • The functionality in the list is based on ideas shared in our brainstorming sessions from the beginning of the year, with some helpful input on priority and estimates from folks in #meta-learn.
    • This should help the teams to use this TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board as a canonical resource for feature and functionality requests for Learn WordPress.

New course proposal

  • @daisyo shared a course idea on building a blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. theme and raised some questions about how best to approach submitting the idea, as the idea is to start with a lesson plan first, and later develop that into workshops.
  • For future course proposals, a proposal is to share/submit through the workshop application form and/or share with Training team members if there’s a lesson plan component.
  • For this course specifically, the goal is to write a recap, in the end, to highlight what works well and what’s needed in this process for future course proposals.

Introduction and Welcome:

February sprint check-in:

Reusable Blocks and BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Directory – has been reviewed by @ashiquzzaman, and @paaljoachim also provided his feedback on Reusable Blocks. The lesson plan is ready to publish.

How to Configure WordPress installation for Contributor and Developer Testing isn’t ready for review. But @courane01 did most of the work and is almost ready to mark it as a done task. @paaljoachim provided his feedback and also commented that a developer should run through the doc for a technical spin.

@courtney01 also voiced her opinion about – some of the pending lessons to publish need to link internally at each other. During the publishing process, connect those in the related resources.

The team agreed to work on a joint proposal with Workshops/Community. @evarlese is planning to publish the agenda after this meeting.

March Sprint Meeting:

@courane01 has drafted a proposal for the team to review. She also commented last time the team started the sprint with a big list from @erica, this can be implemented for the March sprint as well. This will help the training team to be more organized.

We’ve been rolling along with the agenda posts keeping track of the sprint, but I remember @erica kicking us off with a big list before Learn launched that we used strikethrough text on.11:27I loved that approach. So the proposed sprint breaks down into a few areas and is welcome to include the Learn Working Group focus as well.

The lesson plan suggestion is one that will help us internally, as well as a few other teams. Setting the topic to be screenshots and video guidelines would help standardize the quality of media that appears on Learn, and grow into some videos and quizzes potentially. The training team can later turn those suggestions into TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. March 2021 Sprint Planning

The Training team is using the Sprint method to determine what we are working on and to determine our timeframe for delivery.

What is a Sprint?

[Sprints] are fixed length events of one month or less to create consistency. A new Sprint starts immediately after the conclusion of the previous Sprint.

Sprint Content on Learn Goals (Lesson Plans)

Theme: How to contribute to the WordPress Project with screenshots and videos (guidelines for how content within screenshots and videos appear).

Think about these with as much consideration toward accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) as possible.

Ideally, these guidelines could be adopted by other teams as well, turned into a video series of workshops, and help onboard others into several parts of the project. Additionally, it lifts needing to maintain this from our team handbook into content on Learn.

  • Sample content – Theme Unit Test Data, GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Blocks Data, Monster WidgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page.   3. @harishanker shared an idea and asked for the team’s feedback.
    • @harishanker said, creating a dedicated workshop focussed on WordPress 5.7 itself, similar as we are working on a lesson plan.
    • @courane01 said, having an additional piece of content may complicate things?  Rather than a lesson about a version, we can focus on revising all the screenshots across all lesson plans impacted by a version and listing where the content was updated. and we could assist with any demo and release work #marketing does to promote the info for sure.
    • @azhiyadev, Agreed on the lesson plans. On having a video on what is coming or what to expect but WP Briefing kinda covers that without any visuals.
    • @courane01 see some content as “courses” and others that are more 1-off workshops.  The lifespan and use of version release may offer historical value but becomes obsolete after the next version ships.  And we haven’t been super efficient at reviewing all the content we have to revise as new versions ship new features.
    • @evarlese credit @harishanker with this thought, but we can also consider how discussion groups might fit into that as well for more Q&A about new tools or features.
    • @courane01 said if we have a major releaseMajor Release A set of releases or versions having the same major version number may be collectively referred to as “X.Y” -- for example version 5.2.x to refer to versions 5.2, 5.2.1, and all other versions in the 5.2. (five dot two dot) branch of that software. Major Releases often are the introduction of new major features and functionality. that changes many obvious features, that we get the existing videos and lesson plans up to date.  Then a summary 1-off piece with a short shelf life, but possibly a very lively real-time discussion would fit in well. That would very likely be exciting to promote and attract attendees to the discussion group portion. But a focus on updating our source materials on Learn & Docs seems important to make the most of life in a release cycle.

Learn WordPress Handbook

  • @camikaos hosted a sprint for the Learn WordPress Handbook last week.
  • The sprint focused on reviewing the existing Handbook drafts and adding in/making edits based on feedback.
  • For next steps, there is still a need for additional contributors to review and add any suggestions or edit to the draft Handbook pages.
    • For access to the Google doc to review and comment on the draft, please ask in the #training channel.
  • From the sprint, one item to be decided is where the Handbook should live: on the Make/Training team blog (this site) or in Learn WordPress itself.

Design UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing./UXUX UX is an acronym for User Experience - the way the user uses the UI.   • Some Design team members have left feedback on the Review/Feedback Request: UX for learn.wordpress.org with suggested changes and/or improvements. Those include:
    • Making changes to the text on the home page, especially to clarify workshops and lesson plans.
    • Organizing content around topics and categories for both lesson plans and workshops in a unified way.
    • Revising the home page layout to highlight calls to action/content types differently.
  • @paaljoachim shared some additional thoughts/feedback on the terminology for workshops, as well, and plans to brainstorm some thoughts around definitions.
  • As a next step, the idea is to write up a proposal/post for the team to review and discuss the text on the home page, whether to make changes, and review how that aligns with Learn WordPress’ goals and mission.
