These past few weeks have been horrific in impact yet galvanizing in action. As filmmakers we are always striving to find ways for our passions and creativity to manifest. Yet this moment in time has proven to us that more than ever our creative manifestations must have purpose and meaning. They must go beyond entertaining. They must educate. They must highlight stories and voices that have been silenced and ignored.

I have seen gains in our industry in terms of expanding opportunities and stories emanating from not only the Black community, but also from the LGBTQIA community. However, these gains are minuscule and are somehow falsely marketed as a success in the fight for diversity. How is it that the number of films directed by filmmakers of color fell from 26 percent in 2018 to 18 percent in 2019? This is one of the many examples that show why the industry’s various stances of solidarity with the Black, LGBTQIA, and female communities in the past simply have not been enough.

It is time for the entertainment industry to assert its commitment to being actively anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic and to take concrete action in the changes it claims to support.

In order for this to happen we must re-examine what stories are being showcased, and more importantly, we must re-examine who is being tasked to tell these stories. After all, films are supposed to be a snapshot of who we are as a society.

But as a Black gay woman in this field I often feel left out of the very picture I have been asked to capture. We must remember images have influence. We must remember that images have power. Because if we are not being seen, we are being erased.

Earlier this summer, ReFrame, WIF and IMDbPro launched CURBSIDE SHORTS, a filmmaking challenge for women and nonbinary filmmakers from North America to create two-minute shorts inspired by life while sheltering in place during COVID-19 using tools at hand such as smartphones, DSLR cameras, animation, lighting, and editing tools. Special thanks to our industry judges Maria Bello, Cara Buono, Marta Cunningham, Nisha Ganatra, Catherine Hardwicke, Barbara Kopple, Col Needham, Tanya Saracho, and Kim Yutani. Huge thanks also to presenting sponsor, IMDbPro; and MPA for providing $10k in COVID-19 relief funds for The Actors Fund and SEE-LA.
