Library Mission

The mission of the Richard G. Trefry Library is to provide quality resources to support learning across all disciplines. Our goal is to assist students in the development of information literacy skills relevant to the digital era in order to promote research, discovery, and critical thinking. We offer research and reference guidance, using methods of communication that fit the lifestyle of today’s students. We support the university’s mission by providing virtual access to American Public University System students and faculty worldwide.

Library Vision

The Richard G. Trefry Library strives to promote academic excellence and professional leadership by providing quality and relevant resources. We seek to build strong partnerships with students and faculty, to promote a cohesive learning experience in support of student success and life-long learning. We endeavor to proactively promote and display the university's unique perspectives and research contributions.

Resources

Open for students and faculty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Librarians are available 7 days a week to assist with research strategies & navigation: [email protected]

Research

  • Articles & Databases: Over 135,000 unique periodicals and scholarly journals.
  • Books: Over 615,000 books and electronic books.
  • Streaming Media: Thousands of hours of streaming audio and video.
  • Research Guides: Librarian created guides, designed to launch scholarly research in the library’s licensed and open access content.

Resources and Services

  • Information Gallery: houses a variety of university resources for student and faculty, including an array of self-help tools, career support, and live tutoring services
  • Interlibrary Loan: Librarians will search and request, items not available in the APUS collection, from other libraries.
  • Tutorial Videos: Demonstration of search techniques and strategies for using the library more efficiently.

  • Copyright: Providing general information on copyright, fair use, public domain, creative commons, images, as well as audio and video recordings.

  • Military Studies & History Special Library: Donations from the library of the Association of the United States Army, the late professor Andrew Baggs, and Lt. Gen. (retired) Richard Trefry form the basis for a new land-based facility in Charles Town, WV. These holdings have a focus toward the school’s specializations in Intelligence, Military History, and Military Studies.
  • Richard G. Trefry Archives: The Archives were founded in 2011 in recognition of American Public University System's 20th anniversary as a means to capture its growing institutional heritage. The Trefry Archives consist of physical and electronic records created by APUS and its predecessor institution American Military University. The University Archives also houses and will soon begin curating a large manuscript collection detailing the career of retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry, an APUS board member since 1997.
    The Richard G. Trefry Archives are located in Charles Town, WV, and open by appointment only. Researchers interested in on-site or electronic access, please fill out the Research Request form.
