WordCamp Video Highlight 2018/09/28

I had the pleasure of attending WordCamp Pittsburgh on September 22, 2018. This is very convenient for me since it is only an hours drive. I had volunteered to help out with the video cameras. Jim Coyle was the lead for the video team and had everything well organized for the event. The videos will start to appear on WordPress.tv shortly. I had a great time, made some new friends and got to see some of my old WordPress friends. The event was well organized and ran smoothly.

If you do a search for Netcast (Video / Audio Podcast) About WordPress, you will see literally hundreds of options to choose from. I have been a fan of netcast for years and have my favorites that I watch or listen to each week.

The videos below explain the advantages of having video and audio content.

Florian Gottschall: Learn why and how to create and use video for your WordPress blog/website

In my workshop I showcase the importance of online video with up to date statistics from main influencers. Based on this background I showcase how you can use video in your own WordPress installation from different sources. I also provide an overview about advantages or disadvantages for each source. As an interactive part I create a video live on stage.

Missy Sorg: Using WordPress for Podcasting

When podcasting became a thing over a decade ago, there weren’t many options for distribution. In order to share our podcasts, we needed to develop a home for them – somewhere where people could find us online that was easier to work with than simple listing sites like TalkShoe or iTunes. That’s why we took advantage of resources we were familiar with – specifically WordPress. We have individual websites for our in-house podcasts – as well as a network page which is home to our growing catalog of Pittsburgh podcasts. I’ll show you how we’ve been able to do that and how you can do it, too.

WordCamp Video Highlight 2018/08/17

Since I first became involved with WordPress in 2010, it seems like there are several big stories throughout each year. 2018 is no exception!

Of course Gutenberg is a hot topic, which is creating strong feelings no matter how you feel about the project. The first video comes from WordCamp Vienna.

Remkus de Vries: How Gutenberg will change the WordPress landscape

As we speak WordPress is going through one of the biggest technological revolutions in its existence. The editing screen is being replaced by a brand new JavaScript-based editor. The project to make this all happen is named Gutenberg, after Johannes Gutenberg; the inventor of the printing press. This tells you something about the ambitions behind this project.

Slides for this presentation can be seen HERE.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) went into effect on May 25th of this year. This video from WordCamp Sydney does a great job explaining why this regulation goes beyond the borders of the European Union.

Brendan Woods: GDPR, WordPress and You

The General Data Protection Regulation presents the greatest overhaul of data laws to Europe in 20 years, however its effect goes beyond the borders of the European Union.

Finally, not a video but an article on WP Tavern about WordPress.com and free speech. It’s a great read and has great comments.  You can read the article HERE.

GlotDict, Pte-Bot and BulkRejectGP – Why Your Community Needs A Glossary

From a gathering at a 2017 WordPress Meetup in Torino comes this video about the Core Team. This Meetup group has over 30 videos available on WordPress.tv. You can take a look at them HERE.

John Blackbourn: Contributor Night #1 – Team Core

The Contributor Nights will be dedicated to studying and working together: every month we will select one of the active teams on make.wordpress.org. For some teams we can count on the support of Italian and foreign leads, while for others we will manage with the studio, reading the documentation, going to see what are the active discussions on trac and on Slack.

For this first evening we are happy to have with us John Blackbourn, WordPress engineer at Human Made and one of the WordPress Core developer, who will help us to discover the Core team.

The WordPress Community.

Unique, powerful, supportive, yes. But it can be so much more!

I have to admit that I have a soft spot for inspiring stories/videos. Here are two recent videos about the WordPress Community.

Joe A. Simpson Jr. : 90 Days – Finding Your Place in the WordPress Community

I set out to become more mindful of the things that bring me positive energy including truly engaging in the Community — 4 WordCamps, 16+ WordPress Meetups, and Events, designed a Wapuu, and a website build/brand to give back.

And finally, on a more personal note. I recorded this video after attending WordCamp Ann Arbor two years ago. I took my son, Michael along with me. Mike is 35 years old and mentally challenged. He enjoys going to WordCamps and meeting new people. Simply put……

This Is Why I love The WordPress Community

WordCamp Video Highlight 2018/07/06

Mental and physical health have been talked about for the past few years in the WordPress Community. The first time I ever heard anybody talk about this was at a WordCamp in Dayton, Ohio in 2014 or so.

These two videos from WordCamp Europe talk about several aspects of staying healthy while dealing with remote work  conditions, anxiety, etc.

Christina Varro: Staying Healthy In the Digital Space

Screen time, sedentary lifestyle and solo remote work can lead to a variety of physical and mental health problems. As a full time freelancer for almost 10 years, I have suffered a variety of sleep disorders, physical health problems, and anxiety disorders.

Laura Nelson: Easing the anxious mind: dealing with anxiety in the workplace

40% of disability worldwide is due to depression & anxiety. However, there’s still so much stigma surrounding the issue, that it rarely gets discussed. This has resulted in people with anxiety feeling like they have to suffer in silence, and employers not fully understanding the condition. Laura will share her personal experience of dealing with an anxiety disorder and how it impacted her working life.

Meetups are a very important part of the WordPress Community.

There are currently over 550,000 people who take part in 1,370 Meetups around the world.

If you are interested in starting a Meetup in your area, the videos below contain good information for getting started.

Laura Hartwig: How To Start A WordPress Meetup In Your Town (And Why You Should)

This talk would be perfect for any of the groups.
I’ve been a WordPress Developer since 2010 and have spoken at two WordCamps and organized WordCamp CT in 2014. I’ve also run 2 different WP meetups and offer online and in-person WordPress training. I learned a lot from the WordPress community and am always trying to pay it forward.

Slides for this presentation can be found HERE.

WordPress Meetup – How to get started?

This session is about getting in touch with the community team and exchange your experiences about organizing WordPress Meetups or to help you starting one in your home town.

Slides for this presentation can be found HERE.

Finally, a testimonial from the Austin, Texas Meetup.

create your own interactive, dynamic Gutenberg blocks? I’ll
lead you through a simple example, and cover some advanced topics
like API calls to 3rd party services, server side rendering,
and using custom React components to help you understand the full
capabilities of Gutenberg – and even how to make some advanced blocks
of your own.

WordCamp Video Highlight 2018/05/18

You have been involved in WordPress for a year or two. You enjoy WordCamps and the WordPress Community, the chats that take place in Slack, Facebook and other online groups. You work hard and become proficient in several areas of WordPress.

Finally, you decide to “give back” and submit a presentation for a WordCamp. You get a notification that your presentation has been accepted! Your first talk is just weeks away.

The big day arrives, you find yourself standing in front of a room full of people who are eager to hear what you have to say.

Panic sets in, you’re not a professional speaker! What to do? What to do?

It’s Glossophobia — a really cool and geeky name for the fear of public speaking

The videos highlighted this week give tips for overcoming those fears, preparing a presentation and beginning your journey in public speaking.

Ángel G. Zinsel: Miedo y PÁNICO a hablar en público

La comunidad WordPress es cada día más grande y está llena de oportunidades para compartir nuestro conocimiento con ella. Pero, ¿qué pasa si tengo miedo escénico?

The WordPress community is getting bigger every day and is full of opportunities to share our knowledge with it. But, what happens if I have stage fright?

Luca Sartoni: The Art of Public Speaking

Comunicare significa letteralmente mettere in comune. È qualcosa che facciamo continuamente, spesso senza troppo pensarci, e gli esperti di comunicazione ci dicono che è impossibile non comunicare.

Communicating literally means sharing. It is something we do continuously, often without too much thinking about it, and communication experts tell us that it is impossible not to communicate.

Steve Carr: Make Winning Presentations

Your team has the skills and techniques they need to make the best decision. Fast. Smart. Efficient. Your presentation covers all of the details. You’ve made your key points clear and you’ve reiterated them at the end of your presentation. But, you still run into resistance. And often, it’s from the same people or teams. By using The Six Thinking Hats, you can ensure your presentation is seen in the best light by each of those stakeholders. The Six Thinking Hats, or modes, was developed by Dr. Edward De Bono. De Bono was a physician, psychologist, author and inventor who originated the term lateral thinking.
