What Does an Interior Designer Do?

Designers will ask you about your budget, tastes, interests, and requirements for a given room. Taking into consideration any building codes or safety issues, they will tie together lighting, colors, artwork, and furniture and arrange it all in a way that looks appealing and allows for flow within the room. Designers are committed to your tastes and preferences. It doesn't matter what colors or styles they prefer. They work with the information you give them to create a finished product you'll find satisfying.

Your interior designer will draw up a plan and discuss it with you. Through his or her connections, the designer can usually recommend contractors, painters, suppliers, and other professionals to find the materials required or complete any remodeling that needs to be done as part of your chosen design.

Decorator vs. Designer

The terms "interior decorator" and "interior designer" are not interchangeable. These are two different professions, and the main difference between them is the level of education.

  • Interior Decorator: Becoming a decorator doesn't require any formal training, and they are not qualified to make structural changes to your home. They focus on decorative aspects: paint, wallpaper, window treatments, and so on.
  • Interior Designer: Designers have a college degree in something like interior design or interior architecture and have passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam. Because of their education and knowledge about building codes and regulations, they can work with you to complete more complicated design projects.

Cost to Hire an Interior Designer

Hiring a designer will save you a lot of time and possibly a lot of money. Designers have all the necessary tools and equipment, so you won't have to buy anything that you'll never use again. The price range for interior designers is huge, partly because different designers use different price structures. The average cost of an interior designer, including materials and labor, is $5,592, though the price can range from $450 to $20,000.

"We recently completed a full kitchen remodel on our 1930's house in San Francisco. We hired Superior Builders and are so happy with the outcome. We wanted to remain true to the character of the house, but with modern touches. Benjamin was fantastic to work with. Some of the biggest positives were: 1) Craftsmanship - Everything was done to a high quality. We were especially concerned about the encaustic cement tiles on the floor. They were expensive and they had to be installed in a very particular way, and they turned out fantastic. 2) Workers - All the workers that came to our house were very polite and helpful. They made sure they did the work to our specifications. We also always felt like we could trust them when we weren't home. 3) Easy to work with - Whenever something didn't go as planned or like we wanted, Benjamin and his crew were very quick to fix the issue, or to explain what they could and couldn't do. 4) Design assistance - We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted in our kitchen and the style. But Benjamin came up with some suggestions that were really good that we incorporated into the design. 5) Price - Superior was not the cheapest bid we received and they were not the most expensive. But we do feel like we got an excellent value for the quality of the work. We feel like we will more than get the value back if we ever sell our house. Of course, not everything goes perfectly when you do a big remodel job. Scheduling sometimes fell behind, but considering the difficulty of getting skilled workers in the Bay area, we did not feel the delays were unreasonable. We were very picky when choosing a contractor, as this was a big expenditure for us, but we're really happy we used Benjamin and Superior. We couldn't be happier with our kitchen."

"Form really helped me see the whole picture. They showed me details that were going to make this kitchen functional for me, but also how it could be a space that I could enjoy whether I was entertaining a group of friends, or just opening my laptop to conduct some last-minute business. I was able to select design features that would make the kitchen easier to use for people like my parents when they come to visit. I picked upper cabinets that had a bracket inside that you can pull down â it means they wouldnâ t have to reach or climb up on things to get what they needed. It makes them feel more welcome in my home, and it puts my mind at ease that they wonâ t hurt themselves. The quality of the product is phenomenal, and something youâ d expect to pay more for. It made me feel like not only had I made a great choice in the design, but I wasnâ t sacrificing on the materials as a result. I got the best of both worlds."

"Mark has just started our remodeling project. He was the only one who would work with us when it came to his fees as an architect. Maybe you should contact me at a later time when we get further into the remodeling/addition."

"Shilpa was very nice to us since the beginning. The most important quality that we loved about her is her patience and listening to all the details that we wanted to give her for this project. We did multiple revisions, but she has never said anything. In fact, she herself participated and gave quite valuable suggestions. We really liked working with her and recommend her to others as well."

"When Patricia works with you, you immediately know you have the real deal. Professional, pleasant, focused, sensitive, respectful and highly experienced. Her experience with Feng Shui stems way back into her childhood. We were thrilled with her contribution towards helping us have a more balanced environment. We will definitely be bringing her back to regroup so she can further assess our situation. She also includes a great deal of astrological information. "

"Mr. Diaz and his company New Sky were very professional. He quoted within a day. Liability and Workers comp fully covered. Entire team was very professional, polite, and finished within one day. It was a large job. He also worked with us on the pricing and they finished in less time than expected. They also had the proper equipment to insure the safety of their workers and our home when removing the oak and trimming 4 other oaks. Not to mention removing two dead smaller non oak trees. They also cleaned up thoroughly after completing the job. Truly a great Tree Service Company to work with if you have a big job!!! L. Inouye"
