What are Handyman & What Do They Do?

Handyman services are kind of the jack of all trades when it comes to small home repairs. They do a lot of easy jobs like:

  • Refacing cabinets
  • Fixing garage door openers
  • Hanging curtains
  • Maintaining a deck
  • Repairing or installing doors

Unless you need something major or done by a specialist -- major electrical, structural or plumbing fixes -- you can usually get a handyman out for less money. It doesn't hurt to consult with a handyman to see if they can do the project before you call a specialist.

Handyman or. Contractor

The key to whether you need a handyman or a contractor depends on if you need a specialized project done. Handymen can do a lot of small projects. Contractors do more specialized work -- building homes, remodeling spaces -- but it means they have to have a license for the work. Handymen can't do the work like that unless they have a license. This means you cannot hire a handyman if you want major projects done.

Average Price to Hire

Hiring a handyman will range in price between $180 and $630. The price will be higher or lower depending on how much work they do, how they charge (by project or hour) and how complex the problem is. On average, you will probably pay a handyman service $390 for the project you hire them to do. Once again, make sure it is a job they are allowed to do and don't require a license. That will save both the professional and you time.

"Shar is simply the best contractor I have ever worked with. He is super reliable, professional, courteous and is a true craftsmen. I had a smallish job of installing clothes rails in my wardrobes, Shar visited, quoted and completed the job with no wasting time or mess. He also did a couple other minor jobs as a professional courtesy. His texts/communication is thorough, detailed and always spot on. He goes over and above to meet your needs and really loves his job. He even worked to my budget and I cannot rate him enough, I wish there were 10 stars! As if that wasn't good enough, he does everything from carpentry to plumbing. "For the 2-3 minor mini-projects at my moms home in Bernal Heights, luckily permits are definitely not required. The third and final mini-project I plan to do is just to put the same granite countertop and some new modern handles on my downstairs vanity. So far, for minor non-permit matters at your home, Scott is great and charges reasonable prices. He is quick and efficient. I would hire him again, but only for minor repair matters that do not require dbi permits. He is definitely my *go-to,* guy for now. He is a good find in the SF bay area. Thanks. -Mr. Garcia in SF, ca. "
