Installing Carpeting in Philadelphia

Carpet is a very popular floor covering for many reasons. It looks great, it provides a cushion for falling objects that might otherwise shatter, and, of course, it feels nice when you walk on it. Though it requires more care than many other flooring options, carpet is still found in many American homes because of these qualities. Those who are thinking of replacing an old carpet, or want to carpet a room for the first time should consider the various options available not just in color and cushion, but in installation, as well.

Indoor Carpet Installation
In most cases, people looking to install carpet are concerned with a room inside of the house. There are basically two main ways this can be done: smooth edge and direct adhered. Each has its own pros and cons, and either can be successful in the proper setting.

Directly adhering a carpet is just what it sounds like. Exact measurements of a room's dimensions are taken, then carpet is cut to the precise size that is needed from a roll. This carpet is then directly stuck to the floor. Since there is no pad or cushion underneath the carpet in this situation, you need to make sure that the kind of carpet you choose is appropriate. Many carpets are manufactured with a cushion layer already attached to them and are good candidates for installation of this type.

Smooth edge carpet installation involves laying a perimeter of "gripper" (narrow timber fitted with two rows of angled spikes) around the room. A cushion is also cut to the dimensions of the room and laid down using the gripper line as a frame. Then the carpet is cut from a roll to the right size to come into contact with the gripper, which holds the carpet in place on one side. The remaining sides of the carpet are stretched or "kicked" onto the corresponding gripper, creating a tight yet cushioned surface. In Philadelphia, carpet installation of this kind might be preferred if you're covering up existing hardwood, as it is easier and less messy to remove at a later date.

Outdoor Carpet Installation
Outdoor carpet is designed to be more pleasant underfoot than concrete or wood, and to give a certain amount of surface safeness for objects that could shatter. While it has come a long way from the muted green, sandpapery material of a few decades ago, it still tends to be rather course because it needs to easily release water and dirt.

Since there is a lot of weather and debris in outdoor Philadelphia, carpet installation on a porch, patio, or deck requires a carpet that is especially resistant to moisture and is particularly easy to clean. When actually putting down outdoor carpet, you'll have the choice of using a self-adhering carpet, or you can opt for carpet that needs to be nailed or stapled down. Outdoor carpet is a good choice for a finished basement, as well, since it is unlikely to be damaged by any existing moisture issues.

Philadelphia Carpet Installation Prices
Due to the weather and other environmental conditions in southeastern PA, a carpet's durability should be top notch if you want your investment to be worthwhile. You should also have your carpets professionally cleaned to increase its life expectancy even more.

For carpet installation, Philadelphia homeowners should expect to pay around $3,500 (though prices can range from $1,000 to $4,500 depending on the size of the job and the type of carpet you use). Jobs usually last 1-3 days, but a large installation can sometimes take over a week.
