Acknowledging that a failure is a failure is less demoralizing than pretending it's a success.

A Tesla worker told me they are being intimidated into returning to work with false claims their unemployment benefits will stop; Tesla workers can continue collecting and do not have to return to work while shelter in place order is in effect.

The Tesla playbook for manufacturing safety is quite something. Basically: Hey, you figure this shit out!? If you have to travel by bus or whatever, then, like, wash your hands or something?

6/ A not so subtle detail in the "Return to Work Playbook" for Tesla -- Not everybody will get PPE. Some have to make & bring their own.

The only thing I'd like better about The Musk Reality Show is if it was purely fictional. That there could be a little asterisk that said "No actual workers were harmed during the production of this COMPLETELY FICTIONAL SHIT SHOW". Because, you know, if it was, I could enjoy it!

It's tyranny if public health decisions are made by anyone except the CEOs of the companies shut down. TYRANNY I TELL YOU! We should actually just leave all public health decisions to CEOs. Or, wait, is that how it already is?! 🇺🇸☠️

I ONLY ASK THAT IF THE ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS THING THAT I'M FORCING ALL MY WORKERS TO DO LEADS TO ARRESTS THAT YOU ARREST ME. THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE. DON'T ARREST THE OTHERS, THOSE WHO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH MAKING THE DECISION. JUST ME. ME, THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB FOR MY OWN CALL!

Tesla worker to me just now: "he NEVER works the line, he stares awkwardly at someone doing their job until they are very uncomfortable, then he walks away.” From another: "When he says on the line he just means walking around every so often to make sure everyone sees him.”

"There is a lot of short-term incentive for the founder to pump up the price of the stock... Mr. Musk has pledged 54% of his Tesla shares, worth about $15 billion on Friday, as collateral on loans at the end of last year"

Amazon may try to buy AMC theaters. And eventually everything else. I'm so old I remember when the Trump DOJ Antitrust division opposed the AT&T-Time Warner merger on the grounds that large vertical mergers would be dangerous.

You'd think being demonstrably, catastrophically wrong on your earlier predictions about the length or severity of this pandemic would endow Musk with some humility around his current projections on that very same pandemic! Nope.

This entire essay is a wonderful introduction to Erich Fromm's 1941 book Escape from Freedom about how a broad need to escape the individual condemnation of supposed meritocracy leads to authoritarianism and nationalism.

"But the idea of meritocracy carries with it a nasty sting, for if we truly believe in a world in which those who deserve to get to the top get to the top, then by implication, we must also believe.. those who get to the bottom deserve to get the bottom"

I often find programming to music w/ lyrics disrupting to the flow, but there's a sweet spot where the lyrics barely connect to semantics, and essentially just become another instrument. That point is ace. Something Was Real by Eli & Fur hits the 🎯
