Plumbing Repair Cost Guide

Hiring a plumber costs between $175 and $450. Most jobs are billed hourly at $45 to $200 per hour. Labor is almost always going to be your biggest expense. The more involved the job, and the more that must be torn up, the costlier the project.

Slab Leak Repair Costs

Fixing an under slab leak costs anywhere from $500 to $4,000. Detecting the leak costs anywhere from $125 to $400 and requires special equipment.

Slab leaks are leaks in pipes under the slab of the home. Fixing one requires jackhammering out portions of the foundation, digging to and repairing the pipe, and repairing it.

Cost to Fix Leaking or Burst Pipes

Leaking pipes cost an average of $150 to $350 to repair, while diagnosing leak locations can add an additional $100. This doesn't include repairing the wall after the fix. Drywall repair costs an additional $250 to $750 depending on the size and location of the hole.

If the pipe burst, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 in water damage cleanup and repair fees. Frozen pipes may also require the price of addressing insulation or heating needs in your home.

Gas vs Water Leak Repairs

Gas pipe repairs cost $250 to $750. Our guide on gas line repairs goes in depth into why prices are slightly higher than water line, though you'll use a plumber for either job.

Repairing Pipes in a Ceiling

Serious plumbing problems might require both replacement of pipe and cutting into walls or flooring. Ceiling repair costs average $675. Cutting into any wall, floor or ceiling incurs additional construction costs on top of the average plumbers' fees.

Main Line Leak

Leak repair runs anywhere from $300 to $4,000 depending on if it needs a repair or replacement.

Clogs - Sink, Bathtub, Toilet, Disposal

Clearing drain clogs costs about $200. Our drain clearing cost guide covers the types of drains and factors that affect cost. Clogs represent the No. 1 plumbing problem, but they're not always serious. A backed-up toilet, for instance, might just need swift work with a plunger.

Sink issues often involve the garbage disposal. Don't put corn husks, celery, grease, meat or starchy foods in it – toss or compost these items. Always run plenty of hot water while it's in use. If it does get clogged:

    Try plunging it first.
  • If it doesn't turn on, it's jammed or overloaded. Follow any troubleshooting steps in the user manual for jams or resetting the unit.
  • Always unplug it before attempting any fixes.

If none of these measures fix the problem, consider hiring a professional plumber.

Sewer and Septic Issues

Sewer repairs tend to be rush jobs. The expedited nature of the job might cost you a bit more, but it will keep your family safe and will hinder further damage to your home. Fixes range from a simple clog to replacing a section of pipe.

Address septic tank issues immediately. Pricing ranges depending on the work you need done.

If you find you have a sewer or septic tank issue, keep your family away from the leak, and call a plumber immediately. Waste water can contaminate your ground water, surface water and your yard with bacteria. The key is to act quickly.

Fixing a Water Heater

Water heater repairs run $550 on average. Our water heater repair cost guide covers common problems like heating elements, thermostats, control valves, thermocouples, anode rods and tank cleaning.

Sump Pump Repairs

Repairs run $300 to $700 on average while installations range anywhere from $650 to $1,800. Our sump pump repair costs guide covers all considerations of submersible and pedestal types and common signs it needs repairing. The sump pump installation cost guide details the types of units and sizing considerations.

Toilet Repair

Toilet repair runs $140 to $300. For details of the pricing of various parts and labor costs, see our toilet repair cost guide.

Average Cost to Replace Plumbing

Replacing plumbing costs anywhere from $350 to $2,000 or more depending on the size of the project. Regardless of repairing or replacing, plumbers cost anywhere from $45 to $150 an hour, usually with a minimum charge, a higher first hour charge, or a trip fee.

Plumbing Prices per Fixture

The most common fixtures include sinks, faucets and toilets.

Bathtub & Shower Prices

Replacing a bathtub costs between $1,000 and $5,000, varying mostly due to the type you install and the surround that goes with it.
  • Shower installation pricing is slightly higher at $1,200 to $5,500. They come in fiberglass, acrylic, tile and glass - often a mixture of these materials.
  • Tub or shower liners run $1,500 to $4,100. Discuss adding acrylic linings with your general contractor.

Replacing the Water Pressure Regulator

Water pressure regulators are $250 to $350 to replace. The part averages $50, the rest is labor. It takes about three hours to install.

The regulator reduces the pressure from the main line running into the home. It also keeps pressure surges from damaging your homes pipes.

P Trap Replacement Prices

The p-trap, also known as a sink trap, runs between $200 and $325 to replace. Costs will vary by location -0 urban areas with higher costs of living can expect higher installation prices. Sink traps are required by building code to keep sewer gasses from entering your home.

Main Water Shut Off Valve

The main water shut off valve is $175 to $250 to replace. Most of this is labor as the materials fall under $25.

This valve is required by code and necessary to work on most home plumbing issues. The first step in any plumbing repair project is shutting the water off.

Plumbing Stack Replacement

Main stack replacement costs anywhere from $1,500 to $4,000 depending on accessibility and length. Well-maintained brass, cast iron or steel stacks last anywhere from 70 to 100 years or more. PVC stacks are much easier to work with but only last 30 to 40 years.

Well Pump

Replacing a well pump runs $1,500 while repairs are $800 on average. Our well pump installation cost guide covers all costs and considerations for jet, submersible, solar and hand pumps as well as replacement factors. The well pump repair guide covers what a one does and problems that may occur.

Water Heater Installation

Installation pricing depends on which type you choose: standard, solar or tankless. Consider each one of these installation guides before choosing which route to take.

Water or Gas Holding Tanks

Holding tank replacement costs $1,500 to $2,400. Simply removing a holding tank runs $500 to $1,350. These two articles walk you through all considerations including why you'd move one, size considerations and choosing between a buried or above ground type.

Rerouting Plumbing Prices

Rerouting a single line averages $650 to $800. However, length and accessibility are both key factors. A line under a slab is much more expensive than a line in a crawlspace of basement. The best way to get pricing for your project is to source multiple bids from licensed contractors.

Whole House Rough in Plumbing Cost Calculator

For a 2,300 square foot home with 2.5 baths, it will cost $11,500 to $14,500 for rough-in plumbing. This type of work is usually done by plumbing contractors who specialize in new construction and major renovations. New plumbing pipes cost about $1,000 in established homes with new additions.

Plumbing Inspection Charges

Plumbing inspectors charge an average of $165 though rates may vary depending on your location and if it's bundled with other home inspection costs of $250 to $500. A plumbing inspection isn't always necessary for purchasing a new home, though it is cheap peace of mind.

Plumber Cost Tips

Saving money on a plumber doesn't mean you need to cut corners. In fact, hiring a licensed pro means knowledgeable and insured work that avoids costly future repairs. Follow these tips to find the right plumber, keep in budget and avoid future problems.

It's always best to shop for a new plumber BEFORE your kitchen sink turns into Niagara Falls. Waiting never makes a plumbing problem better.
  • Get a firm estimate in writing. Make sure you're apprised of any problems that arise.
  • Multiple factors affect cost: fixture quality, quantity, job time, location and when you need the job done. Holidays, weekends and after-hours emergencies cost more.
  • Be aware of first-hour and trip fees. Most plumbers and rooting companies charge upfront fees or higher rates for the first hour just for showing up, though those fees usually can roll into the cost of repairs and renovations.
  • Going for the lowest bids can be problematic. Some companies offer lower hourly rates, but then tack on equipment fees and other extras you might not have anticipated.
  • Not all companies employ licensed plumbers. If the job is a simple root-out-the-clog, that might be okay, but licensed plumbers are almost always better at diagnosing tricky problems. Expect them to bring micro-cameras and other fun gadgets, and to warranty their work.
  • Consolidate jobs to save money. If you know you've had a leaky faucet in your bathroom for weeks, ask your plumber about it while he or she is working on your toilet. It could save you money in the long run. Learn more about how to fix a leaky shower faucet.
  • How to Estimate Plumbing Jobs

Estimating a plumbing job is best left to the professionals. However, our guides linked to throughout this article are the best first step to understanding pricing. Understanding basic plumbing is an excellent second step. Not only does this help you diagnose potential problems before they become costly ones, but it'll help you understand what a plumber does.

My plumbing experience was  to have the plumbing  disconnected under the sink so the counter top and new sink could be installed.  I thought the service  of $115 was high, but usually if there is an additional fees, it is usually rolled into the cost of repairs or labor.  This company also charged 3.75 % for putting it on a credit card, which was not mentioned until I received the invoice in the mail after paying on the phone.

Then of course they had to come back to reconnect. They charged another $119..00  for service and 1.5 hrs for labor $198 and $54 for parts and rolled neither of the service charges
So to have the plumbing disconnected and reconnected $499.44 . Definitely not an amount I expected..
I think it is rather rude and a bit dishonest for people to not divulge their total fees upfront, an of course we should know to ask. But the normal person wouldn't know the questions to ask until they are burnt once like this, and then there still could be costs for walking up stairs or charge another service call if they need to go somewhere to use the bathroom and come back. THAT ISN'T A QUESTION I WOULD THINK TO ASK.
However I won't call this company again, and of course I will  share my experience with other people who are talking about plumbing. .

I had 207 Plumbing come to fix a leak in my ceiling.  It's a terrible, terrible company to do business with.  He came and fixed a broken pipe in the ceiling, and I asked him to check the rest of the pipe to make sure that nothing else was broken, he said everything was OK and charged me $219.00 for 45 minutes and left.  Never cleaned up his mess.  I went to clean up the mess after he left and found there was more damage to the pipe.  I called him to come back, which he did.  He looked at the water coming down from the ceiling, into a light fixture and said he had another job to go to and couldn't come back until next week.  He also wanted to charge me $350.00 to come back.  I told him that was too much and he said he would make an exception and only charge me $219.00.  Now I have major damage done to the ceiling, the light fixture and the floor.  All of this could have been prevented if he had stayed and fixed the problem.  I will NOT hire him again.

I called a Septic tank specialist out to pump my 1,000 gallon septic tank system. I was quoted $185.00 but because of the overage (my tank was past the 1,000 gallons) I paid &471.00 and found out that I have to get a new pipe line because a tree root or something is causing my septic not to drain properly.

My plan was to have an old kitchen faucet head replaced with a new one I had bought, a 5 minute job at most. The plumber told me it would first be a $28 assessment fee and then a "job " cost but they could not quote phone costs or give me any indication of a range cost. I declined to use them and to find a handyman instead. Plumbers stories significantly overcharging  seem prevalent and I could see it could well happen to me. I got a handyman who did the job in 3 minutes flat! The Plumbing Costs Chart you sent out is good, it shows it would probably have cost me $200 for 5 minutes plus $28 assessment fee.

Hello I had a plumber do an estimate for me to replace our copper pipes with plastic as we have no existing walls up in our basement yet...pretty basic job... so we figured we could upgrade as we do live in Northern Ontario and it does tend to get quite cold here in the winters.  We dont have any existing problems with our plumbing right now just figured it would be good time to do the job and perhaps change the pipes to 3 quarter inch for faster flow.  Well I never thought in all my life I would get an estimate back that would state $350.00 an hour in labor...yes that is correct $350.00 an hour...estimated 10 hours for the job to be completed.  So he quoted me $3500.00 for labor alone.. not supplies?  Well needless to say I will be happy with my half inch copper pipes and will happily wait for my bathtub to fill up at a slower pace.  Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this $350.00 an hour quote?  Thank you and enjoy your day.

plumbers must be asked directly what they charge hourly and if that is in addition to a service charge. The two are separate and I think they have gotten away with outrageous charges because of the potential of water damaging homeowner structures.   I had a plumber (not Home advisor) come and replace a part in my kitchen sink that was under warranty---the spray nozzle had been leaking...He charged me $85.00 for 15 minutes of work and I will never use Mr King again.

I just had my pipe under the sink unclogged  and new pipes put in $600.00, then they flushed out the pipe from under the sink to the outside pipe $700.00, Total of $1.600.00, I thought that the price was high, I got the plumber from Home Advisors, not sure they had to do all they did but they said I needed the work done.  The same evening hike using the dishwasher I had a leak in one of the pipes they put in, they came back the next day to fix it. Don't know if I will use them again.. They were K&D kitchens.

Find out before they come out if they are charging a "travel fee". It seems outrageous to me that someone located within 25 miles or less of your home should charge $85.00 just to show up! Why doesn't Home Advisor mention that possibility when you first inquire about a specific plumber?
William Wood More than 1 year ago
I thought that my sump pump had ended its life and needed to be replaced. The contractor I found through Home Adviser came out the following day and arrived reasonably promptly.  The technician tested the pump and it wasn't responding. He then checked the  breaker panel and all seemed well. However he checked to see if power was reaching the outlet, it wasn't so he tripped some breakers and reset them and the power to my pump came on and the pump works so a replacement wasn't necessary. He charged $75.00 which I think was reasonable for a call-out fee and time spent.

We just had a plumber here to replace the fill valve on a toilet. He was here for less than 10 minutes, and he charged us $125.   The job was done well, but that seemed like a lot of money for such a short fix.

I used Go Green Express Home Services for a minor plastic pipe repair under my kitchen sink...The worker did a great job fixing this minor pipe plastic pipe repair( my original pipe was too short and he needed to extended the pipe and then reconnect). It took him less than 10 minutes to fix. I was first quoted $125 +tax but when the worker went to his truck and spoke to whoever he spoke to at the office, the price rose to $155.10 +tax for a total of $167.10...I thought that was a little too high. Will I use this company again, I Don't Know. It would be helpful if they would have a set price list for jobs (minor repairs, Major repairs etc...), then you as the consumer can see beforehand what the cost maybe and work from there with the company. Minor repairs, Major repairs this company should at least have a set-price list. ..The worker was great and efficient and did a good job on the repair but their prices are a bit costly. And yes, I did write this in their review.

If the cost is exactly how Home Advisor indicates then he’s charging 350.00an hour.  I did my homework checked with other plumbers and it. Would not take an hour to remove old and install the new water heater. Thank Goodness I did my research won’t be using their services and I will be letting others know what happen to me. #3 Nothing about a air gap item #RA2-401 costing $i66. I did not know I could cancel the job when the job pricing was told to me. Again, if I knew what the job was going to cost, I would have said NO WAY.

Why no one will address replacing faucet rubber washer
Jeff Dywan More than 1 year ago
    Hello Ms. Jones.
Sometimes a faucet leak can be stopped by replacing the rubber washer at the end of a faucet stem or cartridge.  This is a more common repair on older fixtures when things were built to last and designed to be able to be maintained.  Other times the whole stem or cartridge needs replacement or the bibb seat deeper back into the fixture needs replacement.  That leads to matching up the right components and often times making a trip to the hardware store or plumbing supply house necessary due to the many varieties, makes and models of faucets.  My advice is to make sure your Plumber has faucet repair kit on their truck before having them come out to assess the issue.

CON'T FROM COMMENTS EARLIER.  However,  the  installation took less than 3/4/ hour and was a basic regulator with no other function.  Looking up the price afterwards, invoice did not list type or price, it appears that it would have cost me around $60 for the regulator and another $15 or so for the additional supplies necessary to install it and it was really a rather simple job with easy access.    Given that, it seems that $300 for less that  an hours worth of on site work,  company says it does not include commute time in its prices, is a little high.  While flat rate quotes are nice, they must take into consideration situations where the work load differs depending on the circumstances.  Therefore, unless you are at the upper end of the harder work needed than the average job. it can be argued that my estimated price of $300 for labor was more than a little high.  Maybe I am wrong since I have not used their services for years and  am not knowledgeable of the costs of equipment and professional labor today.

Needed to replace a water pressure regulator.  Looking at the retail costs of the regulator, they seem to run from abouit $60 to over $300 for one that includes more that the basic control of water pressure in the house.  Had not used a pro plumber for over 20 years so I was not up on the costs associated with needing their help.  I was contacted by at least 3 plumbers but only one, Right Now Plumbers, gave me an instant quote of $394  for the service without me even asking. Although I thought this price seemed a little high for a job that takes less than an hour to complete, I accepted their service.  Must say that the job was done very professionally and would use them again if needed.  However,

I replaced the leaking wax seal at the bottom flange with a rubber seal, had to change the tubing from the shut -off valve with a hose, replace the shut-off valve. I did it my self. I enjoyed doing it.
How much I save, about, in Somerset NJ. It taken me a good 6 hours together with running two times to Home Depot.
Mind you I'm an HVAC Product development Engineer, hands on as most the HVAC guys are.
