This actually caused a mini scandal in Japan. The sushi bar now bans all photography. It’s a charming video but no one was asked permission to be filmed. Somewhat acceptable in the states but it’s a big social taboo in Japan.
-
I get that. But I also like the video. Am conflicted
-
sometimes art is uncomfortable. this pushes the boundaries for sure. i am not unhappy that this exists for the sake of the merit of it's provocative novelty.
-
this is an invasion of privacy not art
-
It can be both things you know. * don't expect privacy in a public place by the way.
-
It’s not a public place. A public place is outside, or somewhere in “the commons”. Additionally, in Japan publishing photography of people without their permission, even in public place is illegal.
-
This should be illegal everywhere. It's a disgusting trend on the internet. Glad that it's forbidden here in Germany.
-
The goal of art is to evoke emotion, that video did this. Whether it was happiness, nostalgia, anger, sadness, or disgust. The video served its purpose, now how you perceive this video is the beauty of art. No two people view it the same.

What brilliant and beautiful original thought that wasn’t yours that you took next to no time at all to present from your page with no additional depth or thought. Thanks
-
(I credited the original YouTube video in an appended tweet that I published at the same time as the post, sped the video up to fit Twitter’s time limit, and added music. )

Sir. While I think we can agree that almost no one is visiting this link after they watched your video, and that it’s completely possible to give your little anecdote with the original link in one tweet directing all views to creator...
-
doesn't matter, video isn't monetized by the creator, he doesn't care as much as you think he does- especially since he almost got deported because of it
-
Well that seems like a reasonable response
-
Yeah it caused a huge kerfuffle in Japan, led to nationwide bans on photography within that restaurant chain (and warnings in others), newspaper and online articles were written for weeks about this "gaijin disrespect", none of which mentioned he'd been a resident for 10 years...
