With its mix of soviet-style architecture and makeshift markets, it may not be beautiful, but it makes up for mere aesthetics with its sheer dynamism and vitality. Located right in the centre of the country, Lusaka often provides a convenient stopover on longer journeys, so why not make the most of it?

Things to see

Like many modern African capitals, Lusaka is keen to assert the independence of its country, throwing off the oppressive history of colonialism. Along the appropriately-named Independence Avenue, the Freedom Statue depicts a man breaking his chains – inspired by the legendary story of Zanco Mutembo, a former freedom fighter who apparently broke the chains holding him in prison. Close by is the Lusaka National Museum, with a severe, soviet façade. It’s worth going inside though, as the collections trace Zambian history from prehistoric days to the modern, independent era, with a wealth of artefacts. There are model rural villages in the ethnography section, and an intriguing exhibit on witchcraft. If you want to explore local life in Lusaka, there’s no better place to do so than at Lusaka City Market. This sprawling place is right next to the central bus station, and it’s often rammed, clothes and homeware spilling from makeshift stalls.

While many African cities charge an eye-watering fortune for their top hotels, you can snap up a luxury hotel in Lusaka for a bargain. There are also several very decent budget hotels, so whatever your price range, you’re guaranteed a comfortable stay. The 5-star hotels boast stunning, high-concept suites, with beautiful furnishings. Little luxuries, like private balconies and memory-foam mattresses, add to the experience. Onsite spas and leisure facilities allow you to unwind, and you can dine in style at the restaurants. In the cheap Lusaka hotels, you’ll have all the basics, like air conditioning, free WiFi, and usually a free breakfast.

Where to stay

In the centre of Lusaka, by the Civic Centre and the Lusaka National Museum, there’s a good choice of luxury, familiar-brand hotels. It’s a great location for enjoying the cultural side to Lusaka, and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and clubs within the vicinity. By the university, north of the city centre, you’ll find several smart business hotels, which are well-suited to professional visits. There are a couple of budget hotels in the Cairo Road area, close to the city’s transport hubs. Cairo Road is also one of the top shopping spots, full of markets, malls and banks.

How to get to Lusaka

Lusaka international airport is located about 25 kilometres northeast of the city centre, and it receives flights from all over Africa. If you’re coming from further afield, you’ll need to connect at a major hub like Johannesburg or Nairobi. There are also direct flights from Dubai. If you’re planning to rent a car, you’ll need to arrange this in advance, and be prepared for chaotic traffic in central Lusaka. Alternatively, you can take a taxi. The drive takes about 20 minutes. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hop on the minivan which runs regularly between the airport and the centre.
