Clogs - Sewer, Sink, Bathtub

Clogs represent the No. 1 plumbing problem. But they're not always serious. A backed-up toilet, for instance, might just need swift work with a plunger. Or not. The most common sink problems involve the garbage disposal. Many of these problems can be avoided by being careful with what you stuff into it. Avoid corn husks, celery, grease, meat and starchy foods and always run plenty of water down the drain with disposables. Disposal clogs, like those in the toilet, can often be handled with a plunger. But if your disposal doesn't come on when you flip the switch, it may be jammed. You'll want to unplug the unit and follow the troubleshooting directions that came with the disposal.
If none of these measures fix the problem, you probably should consider calling a professional.
Serious plumbing problems might require not just replacement of a pipe or two but cutting into walls or flooring. Labor is almost always going to be your biggest plumbing expense, so the more involved the job, and the more that has to be torn up, often the more costly the job.

Sewer and Septic Issues

Septic issues stink. Literally. If you find you have a sewer or septic tank issue, keep your family away from the leak, and call a plumber immediately. The rush nature of the job might cost you a bit more, but it will keep your family safe and it will hinder further damage to your home. Waste water can contaminate your ground water, surface water and your yard with bacteria. Sometimes the fix may be as simple as fixing a clog, but other times it could be more complex, such as replacing a section of pipe. The key is to act quickly before a small problem becomes a big one.

Other Plumbing Cost Tips

It's always best to shop for a new plumber BEFORE your kitchen sink turns into Niagara Falls. Consider looking for a plumber for non-emergency jobs, such as moving a sink in a bathroom or changing out faucets. These can be handled as you do other work with contractors: Get a firm estimate and make sure you're apprised of any problems that arise.
Factors that affect cost include the quality of and number of fixtures, the time it takes for the job and when the job is needed. Holidays, weekends and after-hours emergencies, of course, will cost more.
Be aware that most plumbers and rooting companies charge upfront fees just for showing up, though those fees usually can roll into the cost of repairs and renovations.
Going for the lowest bids can be problematic. Some companies offer lower hourly rates, but then tack on “equipment fees” and other extras you might not have anticipated.
Also, be aware that not all companies employ licensed plumbers. If the job is a simple root-out-the-clog, that might be OK. But licensed plumbers are almost always better at diagnosing tricky problems (expect them to bring micro-cameras and other fun gadgets), and they're more likely to warranty their work.
One way to save money on plumbing is to consolidate jobs. If you know you've had a leaky faucet in your bathroom for weeks, ask your plumber about it while he or she is working on your toilet. It could save you money in the long run.

My plumbing experience was  to have the plumbing  disconnected under the sink so the counter top and new sink could be installed.  I thought the service  of $115 was high, but usually if there is an additional fees, it is usually rolled into the cost of repairs or labor.  This company also charged 3.75 % for putting it on a credit card, which was not mentioned until I received the invoice in the mail after paying on the phone.

Then of course they had to come back to reconnect. They charged another $119..00  for service and 1.5 hrs for labor $198 and $54 for parts and rolled neither of the service charges 
So to have the plumbing disconnected and reconnected $499.44 . Definitely not an amount I expected.. 
I think it is rather rude and a bit dishonest for people to not divulge their total fees upfront, an of course we should know to ask. But the normal person wouldn't know the questions to ask until they are burnt once like this, and then there still could be costs for walking up stairs or charge another service call if they need to go somewhere to use the bathroom and come back. THAT ISN'T A QUESTION I WOULD THINK TO ASK.
However I won't call this company again, and of course I will  share my experience with other people who are talking about plumbing. .

I had 207 Plumbing come to fix a leak in my ceiling.  It's a terrible, terrible company to do business with.  He came and fixed a broken pipe in the ceiling, and I asked him to check the rest of the pipe to make sure that nothing else was broken, he said everything was OK and charged me $219.00 for 45 minutes and left.  Never cleaned up his mess.  I went to clean up the mess after he left and found there was more damage to the pipe.  I called him to come back, which he did.  He looked at the water coming down from the ceiling, into a light fixture and said he had another job to go to and couldn't come back until next week.  He also wanted to charge me $350.00 to come back.  I told him that was too much and he said he would make an exception and only charge me $219.00.  Now I have major damage done to the ceiling, the light fixture and the floor.  All of this could have been prevented if he had stayed and fixed the problem.  I will NOT hire him again.

I used Go Green Express Home Services for a minor plastic pipe repair under my kitchen sink...The worker did a great job fixing this minor pipe plastic pipe repair( my original pipe was too short and he needed to extended the pipe and then reconnect). It took him less than 10 minutes to fix. I was first quoted $125 +tax but when the worker went to his truck and spoke to whoever he spoke to at the office, the price rose to $155.10 +tax for a total of $167.10...I thought that was a little too high. Will I use this company again, I Don't Know. It would be helpful if they would have a set price list for jobs (minor repairs, Major repairs etc...), then you as the consumer can see beforehand what the cost maybe and work from there with the company. Minor repairs, Major repairs this company should at least have a set-price list. ..The worker was great and efficient and did a good job on the repair but their prices are a bit costly. And yes, I did write this in their review.

I think I could have use this information two days ago.  Pink Plumber came to install a kitchen faucet in my house and charged me $400 which I think was too expensive.  I provided my own faucet so I thought the cost will come down, but it didn't.

I have no problem paying for any service I receive but when Allied Reddi-Rooter came into my home and immediately tell me and them tell me it would cost me 350.00 for them to install a new Rheem water heater (his recommendation) that cost 409.00 I have a problem. If the cost is exactly how Home Advisor indicates then he’s charging 350.00an hour.  I did my homework checked with other plumbers and it. Would not take an hour to remove old and install the new water heater. Thank Goodness I did my research won’t be using their services and I will be letting others know what happen to me. Shame on you Allied

To much money!! I paid $507. Nice service fellow, but did not like BIG BLUE'S STRIGHTFORWARDPRICING list. Mine is listed as a #5 that dose not show faucet replacement. We talked about the air gap for the dishwasher but nothing was replaced. My agreement addendum form

#3 Nothing about a air gap item #RA2-401 costing $i66. I did not know I could cancel the job when the job pricing was told to me. Again, if I knew what the job was going to cost, I would have said NO WAY.

Hello Ms. Jones.
Sometimes a faucet leak can be stopped by replacing the rubber washer at the end of a faucet stem or cartridge.  This is a more common repair on older fixtures when things were built to last and designed to be able to be maintained.  Other times the whole stem or cartridge needs replacement or the bibb seat deeper back into the fixture needs replacement.  That leads to matching up the right components and often times making a trip to the hardware store or plumbing supply house necessary due to the many varieties, makes and models of faucets.  My advice is to make sure your Plumber has faucet repair kit on their truck before having them come out to assess the issue.

 CON'T FROM COMMENTS EARLIER.  However,  the  installation took less than 3/4/ hour and was a basic regulator with no other function.  Looking up the price afterwards, invoice did not list type or price, it appears that it would have cost me around $60 for the regulator and another $15 or so for the additional supplies necessary to install it and it was really a rather simple job with easy access.    Given that, it seems that $300 for less that  an hours worth of on site work,  company says it does not include commute time in its prices, is a little high.  While flat rate quotes are nice, they must take into consideration situations where the work load differs depending on the circumstances.  Therefore, unless you are at the upper end of the harder work needed than the average job. it can be argued that my estimated price of $300 for labor was more than a little high.  Maybe I am wrong since I have not used their services for years and  am not knowledgeable of the costs of equipment and professional labor today.

Needed to replace a water pressure regulator.  Looking at the retail costs of the regulator, they seem to run from abouit $60 to over $300 for one that includes more that the basic control of water pressure in the house.  Had not used a pro plumber for over 20 years so I was not up on the costs associated with needing their help.  I was contacted by at least 3 plumbers but only one, Right Now Plumbers, gave me an instant quote of $394  for the service without me even asking. Although I thought this price seemed a little high for a job that takes less than an hour to complete, I accepted their service.  Must say that the job was done very professionally and would use them again if needed.  However,

I replaced the leaking wax seal at the bottom flange with a rubber seal, had to change the tubing from the shut -off valve with a hose, replace the shut-off valve. I did it my self. I enjoyed doing it.
How much I save, about, in Somerset NJ. It taken me a good 6 hours together with running two times to Home Depot. 
Mind you I'm an HVAC Product development Engineer, hands on as most the HVAC guys are.
