We will definitely be back--great food, great service, great bar.
Decided to try Mockingbird before the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir concert at the Paramount. Started with cocktails and their fried Brussels sprouts--amazing! I had the duck confit and my wife had the hangar steak. Both were fantastic.
Highly recommended.
This is my third time to this restaurant. The first time, for dinner, I thought it was OK, but a little overpriced. $31 for okay Hanger Steak is a little expensive. The second time we went with a group (6 people) and the food was a little better, but still very pricey. We had 6:30 reservations, but went to restaurant early for drinks. We were told that there was a very large crowd coming in and that we would have to give up our table in the bar area so they could accommodate their guests. I thought this was a little strange, so I let them know we had 6:30 dinner reservations and perhaps they could just seat us early. They did and that worked out. The third time was for lunch and they were really good. The waiters were good and the food came out quick which is important when you have an hour lunch. The Brussel Sprouts are "to die for" food and the morrocan (sp?) chicken was really good. Again, the hanger steak, not bad, but not great either. I will, of course, go again. As far as the person who wrote it is a dangerous area, really? It is in the heart of downtown Oakland, and I love this area. We urban people get it - :)
We were recovering from Pican closing, when we chanced on Mockingbird. Yes, friendly service. Yes, interesting drinks and a good wine list. And yes, shrimp and grits (prawns, actually). Great meal, and one that pleased three generations.
Overall, the choices of appetizers and entrees our party of four ordered were creative, fresh and delicious. The Tagine, Moroccan Chicken and the shrimp dishes were tender and yummy while the pasta was fairly good. The Kale salad was refreshing. We dined there on the evening after thanksgiving and it was not very crowded and the noise level was fine. My only complaints were that Joe, our server was somewhat pushy and seemed to want to rush things along when in fact, the place was not busy. Also, he did not seem interested in checking with the chef re: our questions about the menu. Otherwise, the staff was attentive to our water needs, etc. Finally, the lighting in the space was too bright and we were seated against the back wall that contained a bright lighted window.
Great food with wonderful flavors. Portion size is good for lunch. Egg salad sandwich and Brussels sprouts are awesome. I've been twice and I've not been impressed with the service either time. The waiter we had on this last visit was abrupt and whisked our plates away before everyone was done. He seemed to be hurrying us out particularly when we didn't want to order dessert. The place is also very loud. I'll keep coming back because the food is great.
Decent food. Ok service. Ask for the main floor dining area. The upstairs area ambiance is awful.
Restaurant is located in a very unsafe area - my husband and I were assulted by 8 young men while walking to our car a few blocks away - it was terrifying and will not be going back. Food was good, our server was good, but the hostess was unorganized and unprofessional.
Yummy food! Happy hour!
Lively and hip ambience. Great service. Fried brussell sprouts and squash and burata were amazing. Disappointed in the hangar steak. Medium rare was actually raw and it wasn’t that flavorful. Fries were amazing though. The corpse reviver drink was not prepared to expectation though granted it’s not a common drink...we’ll be back soon and try something else
Enjoyed the food immensely! The Brussels sprouts are to die for! It was very noisy at 6 pm due to crowded bar area so hard to hear at the dinner table. Staff was nice but reservations are booked 1 1/2 hours apart so some pressure to eat and leave! But staff was nice and attentive.
The service was outstanding. Knowledgeable about the ingredients, about the wine and the source of the food. Simple decor covers a small portion of the walls helping to reverberate sound. Fun cocktails. A small wine list for lunch. Parking right next door.
The Brussel Sprouts were very good and the French Fries tasty and unique. The hanger steak and fries was the correct size for lunch. The food is presented well.
Brussels sprouts and duck confit dishes were delicious. Friendly servers.
Bar service was exceptionally poor.
Service, food and ambience: 5 stars.
Friends got lost--WAZE sent them to the old San Pablo location.
Owner comped us brussel sprouts (delish!) when she heard.
Great atmosphere and good, honest food. Creative but not fussy. Good size portions. Friendly staff.
Everything we had, had too much salt. There was even salt on the butter with our bread, and salt on top of our cheesecake. Why?? The brussels sprouts starter was the best thing on their menu. The Moroccan chicken was salty, the shrimp with grits bland, and the hamburger bun was soggy from the meat. Everyone raved about the french fries but they’re nothing special . Would not go back
Absolutely delicious! We can't wait to return. Started with old fashions and crispy brussels sprouts. Next we shared the escarole salad with beets, satsumas and walnuts - perfectly dressed. Hubby had the shrimp and grits which he loved. I had the Moroccan chicken - super moist with crispy skin and the most incredible sauce. Our server recommended a great wine pairing as well.
Meal was mediocre but definitely enjoyed the brussel sprouts appetizer.
The decor and atmosphere were pleasant but overshadowed by the overly bright lighting and noise level. Cut lighting by 50% and soundproof the ceiling. The server could barely hear us. The cocktails sound interesting but tasted a bit watery. The persimmons were underripe. I really wanted to like this place but it needs some fine tuning.
Awesome addition to downtown Oakland. Don’t miss it!
The best french fries I have ever eaten by far. To die for. I'm literally going to get heart disease and die and early death so I can eat more of these fries.
We enjoyed our dinner at Mockingbird with 6 friends seated upstairs. The cocktails were great. Most of our party ordered the steak, which was terrific. The french fries "which they take seriously" were amazing. This was a great place to eat dinner before seeing a show nearby.
Fun atmosphere, tasty cocktails, good service and friendly staff. Some of the food was delicious and some was just okay. A bit overpriced but I would definitely go back to try their happy hour. Appetizers, especially the brussel sprouts and cocktails seem to be their forte.
We love the new location downtown. The exposed brick and custom artwork is a great touch. The food is still fantastic!
Great food and service. We had a group of 7, and everyone raved about their entrees. I had the steak, and it was terrific. Only problem—the ventilation—very windy! My eyes are dried out!
Fabulous addition to the neighbor. Great place for lunch or dinner, convenient to many offices in Oakland City Center!
Food is good however a little pricey for the portions. We had two entrée salads and one soup, two iced teas and the bill with tip was $60. A good smoked trout salad and nice presentation; just a small portion of trout. Will return however. Needed an afternoon snack also as wasn't full.
Food was great! I loved brussel spouts as a child and then grew to dislike them as an adult. Mockingbirds brussel sprout appetizer reminded me why I used to like (and perhaps still do) them.
I was a bit surprised to find our entree salads arrive prior to our appetizers. Other than that, the staff was attentive without being intrusive and ensured our water and iced tea glasses were always refilled.
Those who had drinks enjoyed them. Those of us who had food really enjoyed the great flavors. Olives were so good! Vegetable tangine was great! Chicken was too pink too eat but our server brought two amazing desserts to make up for it. Caramel bread pudding dish was outstanding! We weren't a large group but the noise really carried so it got very loud very fast. Fun night though. Will put it on our list to try again!
A cool place in Oakland, with many cool places. Great food. Ambiance. Friendly chef.
The food was only ok. Unfortuneatly, the menu did not state the the prawn dinner was cold and my clients were very disappointed. :-(
Extremely friendly people staffing bar & restaurant; delicious food; wonderful ambiance; plus big tv for sports fanatics
Really loved the food (smoked trout salad and shared fries with my dining friend). She had a sandwich and enjoyed that too!
My only quibble is that they charge for bread and butter ($6, I think). That seems petty especially when one is having a salad, and bread would be nice to have on the side.
Also, I would not want to sit on the left side near the back and see people washing their hands, combing their hair, etc. outside the restrooms. That is just strange and unappealing.
But great to have an excellent restaurant in downtown Oakland!
The cheeseburgers were truly especially good, cooked perfectly medium rare and service was quick to supply mustard and mayo upon request. I highly recommend the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer and the bread pudding, complete with whipped cream and caramel, for desert.
Thanks very much to the staff for bringing us a dessert without us even asking, to celebrate the birthday of a member of our party!
Pretty nice place with a good food and nice atmosphere, but nothing very special.
Great wine and cocktail program! I have been twice this month because of the good options, including gluten free and vegetarian.
Far too noisy. Ordinary food. Over priced for the quality.
Friends from deeper East Bay, San Francisco, and Oakland were all coming together, so the best place seemed like Oakland. We needed a place that would take a reservation for 5 the night before, and had a full bar. This is harder than it seems, and Mockingbird fit all of this. None of us are "foodies", we're happy with fusion and American food. The atmosphere was great, there is parking close by, and the loft was a great space for conversation (I imagine the first floor would be pretty loud).
Great food and service but horrible lighting at night! Way too bright. Not romantic :(
