Gutenberg

Description

The goal of the block editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable.

Warning: This is beta software, do not run on production sites!

The new post and page building experience will make writing rich posts effortless, making it easy to do what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery.

WordPress already supports a large amount of “blocks”, but doesn’t surface them very well, nor does it give them much in the way of layout options. By embracing the blocky nature of rich post content, we will surface the blocks that already exist, as well as provide more advanced layout options for each of them. This will allow you to easily compose beautiful posts like this example.

Gutenberg is built by many contributors and volunteers. You can see the full list of contributors in the GitHub CONTRIBUTORS.md file which we are continuously updating. You can follow along on github.com/WordPress/gutenberg and on the #editor tag on the make.wordpress.org blog.

Reviews

It looks good & works, however… some concern.

I’m not going to lie. I like my Meta Boxes and will wait to see what happens. With the update 1.2.1 it shows “coming soon” for Extended Settings aka Meta Boxes. How it will work, I don’t know yet and I feel a little anxiety to be honest. I’ve taken a lot of time & effort to learn Meta Boxes the way WordPress uses it without any 3rd party plugins.

Having used CMB & ACF before I still choose not to use any plugins. I don’t like page builders as well as I choose to code & style my own (/clients) designs. All the sites (complete themes) I made so far don’t use any Meta Box plugins. Everything is hard coded.

Anyway, the Gutenberg Editor… Reading tons of information beforehand was not a good idea for me. Again, negative reviews and so on bring out the negative feelings. Reading all these negative / positives I found myself deciding that the Editor is for people that only write posts and so on I decided to try my best testing it with a theme I’m currently building.

I’m not a part fitter, I’m a part builder.

Without prejudice to others, most people these days only use plugins to support their designs; very few do the whole design process from scratch and depend solely on plugins.

I’ve tested the plugin thoroughly with a nearly finished theme with 4 custom posts, many <?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, 'fieldname', true); ?> and a lot of customizer settings. All is good. No interference thus far.

Gutenberg
I really do like the editor. Side by side with the current editor it just looks better & honestly feels better. Made about 20 posts thus far & all of them looks great within the existing theme. No need to have changed any code within my existing theme. This is excluding the Custom Post Types. I’ve tried adding to the plugin to no avail.

The only issue I got was with standard image. I’m using Underscores & Bootstrap, when adding 1920x1200px the image is too big. I’ve tried the – Block Settings/Additional CSS Class but that seems not to work. However, adding a cover image with no extra css and the same size image it works perfectly. A minor issue as this is still beta.

I will test more but my conclusion is I like it & thinks it’s good for WordPress. The only negative aspect is Meta Boxes. Will it work, how to do it if changes are coming… So many questions & confused feelings. 10 Years learning all these things and suddenly everything seems to be changing… I cannot see myself learning everything again… Without these I just don’t know what to do…

PS: I’ve also learned the Customizer in detail & all my themes are very customizable, I hope this don’t effect the Customizer as well.

VERDICT: With Meta Box sorted, this will be good for WordPress.

Future of WordPress

This is definitely the future of WordPress. Per my opinion, success of Gutenberg editor would reflect success of WordPress in future. Thank you team for working hard developing Gutenberg, it looks very promising to me. It’s currently missing “Row” element with possibility to set number of columns and add new blocks inside the columns. When this feature is added, it will be enough for me to start using Gutenberg on my sites and start developing themes that support it. New era of WordPress starts with Gutenberg!

Not truly usable yet (beta), but this is the future

I love the idea, the system and the design of it. It’s not truly usable yet, but it is definitely a leap forward for WordPress. It’s awesome to unify the WordPress ecosystem around the same page builder and enhance it through plugins and I am looking forward to contributing to it. Hence my 5 stars. Of course, the plugin doesn’t deserve 5 stars in its actual state.

One thing I didn’t understand: Why is the HTML code for the gallery auto-generated on the fly, in the editor?

Also, is there somewhere we can see the list of filters?

Is Gutenberg going to support a grid system?

Not bad… but

The visual editor offers a lot to beginners and bloggers, who don’t look for an astonishing design. It is not about what you may or not achieve whit the plugin but the amount of effort to do accomplish the desired design (you would have to write your WHOLE CSS and JS to make it beautiful). In comparison, almost every builder has done the heavy lifting for you, lets say DIVI, Visual Composer, X Theme, etc. and you only need to modify certain things to make it appealing.
I really liked the concept of blocks – although not new – and how was it applied in an interesting way. I think that just adding a couple of extra customization possibilities (padding, line-height!?) would change my mind about using Gutenberg for a project.
Looking forward to see more development and maybe help in the future 🙂

I’m a bit concerned

The Gutenberg project is good, but I have some concerns about it.

First of all, it must be a choice, to enable/disable and also enable or disable by post-type.

I’ve many customers that doesn’t use even the current editor, I made a lot of plugins using custom post types and meta-boxes with custom post-fields.

Please, keep WordPress flexible and easy to extend and don’t kill metaboxes, this is so, soooo diferent than blocks or gutenblocks.

Hope my voice could be heard.
