Project: Build or Replace a Deck or Non-Masonry Porch
This was the most horrific experience. We began in April and Lee tried to tell us we did not need a permit and he was used to getting the dumpster in and out of the home so the inspector wouldn't notice. We had plans for a drop platform deck. He gave us a quote and refused to let us see the plans until he collected a 50% deposit.$6400 dollars later we told him we wanted a permit. He was most upset when we told him we went to the inspector and asked for one. The inspector would only approve replacement of what existed. When we asked for a revised quote, he told us he didn't have a calculator. When I told him I did, he revised the quote but said he would leave the original 12,800 on the contract because it would take a few days to get it back to us. We refused to not revise it. Without the permit in hand and without our knowledge, he had a dumpster delivered to tear down the old deck. We had to run out at 6am and tell them to take it away. We finally received the permit in September. He left the dumpster in our yard for two plus weeks telling us they were really busy and couldn't pick it up. We called several times and he would not respond to our phone calls or e-mails. He and one other elderly gentleman finally came and dug our footings. It was another two weeks before they poured the cement while I hoped they wouldn't collapse in the two days of rain we had. The inspector approved the footings and it was another two plus weeks before they returned with the materials. At this point I was hoping they were not going to take the money and run. We tried contacting him at least twenty times to no avail. They finally framed the deck and did not return for another two plus weeks and would not return phone calls or e-mails. We had a friend come to look at the deck who is a finished carpenter. Lee was telling us we needed to blast old concrete steps for the new steps to be built. Our friend did not think so. Our friend also told us we needed a 2 inch overhang that they did not provide and then a fascia board on the front. Lee told us we should have gotten our friend to do it and told us it would be an additional charge. More time went by without any response from our messages. We finally wrote him an e-mail saying if he could not complete the work by November 28th we would consider his contract null and void. He finally responded saying if we agreed to blasting the steps and the additional cost for the fascia board he could do it. They finally finished the job on December 4th. They chopped the cement steps by hand and left it ragged. He said he would have to rent a cement saw to finish it properly and that would be an additional charge. I could not bare to see him anymore and signed off on it. Then he presented us with an invoice with the bill in his hand. When we asked to see it, he pulled it away. We told him we would not pay him until the inspector had signed off on it. The inspector came and signed off on it a few days later. He immediately called us and wanted his money. We asked for a copy of the bill which we received the next day. There were at least $1000 in extra charges for the steps, fascia boards and replacing the overhang. He charged us for correcting his own mistakes. We told him we were reviewing the bill. He called and told us we were delinquent in our payment and there would be additional charges incurred. This was four days after receiving the bill. We made him an offer of $950 less and told him we would like nothing better than to take him to court. He accepted the offer and came later that day to pick up the check. I have never been so upset with anyone working on our home. He caused many arguments between my husband and I as to how to deal with his non compliance. He was rude and unavailable until his payment was involved. Save yourself from this misery and NEVER hire this horrible man!!
Response by Lee Wheeler: Its really saddens me to see this review. It shows me that there is some really sick people out there. For the real story feel free to ask me about it. Lee

Lee did an outstanding job organizing, executing and completing the first phase of my rather complicated kitchen remodel. I'm looking forward to working with him on the final phase of this project.

Project: Remodel or Renovate One or More Rooms
The project included demo, creation a full size bathroom, home office, and master bedroom. We were not living in the home during the remodel, but Lee always did a great job with communicating project status and sharing photos. We encountered a few surprises during our project, but Lee was always honest and gave us a recommendation on options. These surprises increased the cost of the project, but were necessary to protect our investment. Lee used quality materials throughout our project and stood by his work. The remodel was started and finished on schedule, despite a bad winter.
