Portland Deck Builders

Portland may not seem like the perfect place to build a deck. The rainy season cuts short the outdoor season for many activities. On the other hand, half the year comprising mid-spring to mid-fall yields some of the most immaculate weather in the whole country. Mild summers allow for near constant use for the five or six months of pleasant, sun-filled weather. Plus, with few homes that include basements, extra living space is nearly a universally desired addition to your home. Decks are one of the easiest and cheapest ways to achieve this.

Choosing Materials
One of the raging debates in the home improvement industry is wood vs. composite decking. Proponents of natural wood decking are hanging their hats on a lot more than tradition. Synthetic decking often fails to live up to its billing. Many synthetic materials may still be susceptible to water, sun, or structural damage. In truth, much depends on the exact wood species vs. synthetic deck manufacturer you choose. Often, the single reason homeowners choose a synthetic decking material is an easy-to-install fastening system or kit. If you're undertaking a deck building project as a DIY endeavor, this is certainly something to consider, although deck installation is foolproof. If you'd rather leave it to the professionals, you can discuss with them the relative pros and cons of each decking material.

Knowing your Seasons
Knowing the weather in Portland is critical for both the process and accessorizing your initial deck installation. The design of your deck will determine for how much of the year you can use your deck. Though summer in Portland is immaculate, a covered deck will extend the use of your deck into the rainy season. Of course, shortly after it begins to rain, the temperature will also drop. Outdoor heaters are nifty in further extending the use of your deck. In fact, most homeowners install deck covering and outdoor heaters in conjunction with one another.

Finally, deck installation will be influenced by the time of year you start the project. Late spring when the weather turns nice will ensure an efficient project timeline. On the other hand, starting in the late spring will also cut short your first season of outdoor enjoyment with your new deck.

Cost of a Deck Installation
The size and design of a deck can range from a simple, small, and single layer deck to a multi-tiered deck with stairs and protective railing. As such, the cost of a deck installation in Portland can range quite a bit. The average cost of a new deck is about $7,500, but recently we've seen projects as low as $1,000 and as high as $35,000. Often, deck plans can be tailored to meet your budget. Alternately, you may be able to finance the project through a bank or directly through your Portland deck builder to expand your budget to meet your desires.

Deck Builders
Finding a Portland deck builder is critical to the success of your project. HomeAdvisor can put you in touch with the best local deck builders in the business. We put each and every one of our contractors through a rigorous 10-step screening process. As with any major home improvement, you should solicit at least three estimates for your deck building project. Discuss a work schedule and a payment schedule that makes sense for both parties. Use your intuition and supplement this gut feeling with our online customer ratings and reviews section, and you'll be well on your way to a new and beautiful deck for your home.

Comment: Very simple decking at the same level of a concrete patio, effectively enlarging the patio space. The concrete patio is small: 9' x 15'. The top surface of the patio ranges approximately 4" - 10" from grade at different areas. I'd like 2 decks on either side of the patio. One deck on one side would be 5' x 21'. The deck on the other side would be "L" shaped and a total of 63sf. I may want to discuss extending electric for some deck lighting and I will also extend a natural gas line for a BBQ, so different trades would be involved. Since a neighbor has a very large tree that shades much of my yard (and dumps leaves), I'd like to discuss composite vs. natural wood options.
