How to assign the Update agent role to a computer

If more than a hundred computers are managed by the Administration Server, then the Update agent is assigned automatically.

In order to manually assign the Update agent for an administration group to a computer, do the following:

  1. In the console tree select an administration group for which the Update agent should be assigned.
  2. In the context menu of the administration group select Properties.
  3. In the Properties widow select Update agents.
  4. In order to add a computer as an Update agent click the Add button and check the box against the desired computer in the Managed computers node. You can add multiple computers at once – all of them will be added to the list.

In order to add a computer which is firewall-protected as an Update agent, do the following:

  • In the Properties of the administration group on the Update agents tab from the drop-down list select Add computer by address. Enter IP address of computer.

As a result an update agent will be added by an IP-address and the Administration Server will detect during the next scan and will move it to the Unassigned computers folder. As this update agent is firewall-protected, the following actions need to be performed to configure it:

  1. Add this computer to the selected administration group.
  2. Re-open the properties window of the selected group on the Update agents tab.
  3. Delete the computer added by the IP-address from the list of update agents.
  4. Add the same computer from the Unassigned computers folder using the Add or Add computer from group button.

  5. In the properties window of the update agent in the Advanced section check if the boxes Connection gateway and Initiate gateway connection from Administration Server part are selected.
