San Antonio Heating Systems

Due to the normally moderate to high temperatures, even a low-capacity San Antonio gas furnace seems an unfortunately high expense for such a narrowly defined need. In today's scramble for newer energy-efficient technology, home heating and cooling is right next to automotive fuels in leading the charge for environmental sustainability. However, there are those times when southern Texas is far from warm; since those times are fewer and farther between than they are in just about every other part of the country, it's understandably easier to ignore your heating system in San Antonio. Heating repair is something that S.A. homeowners might not need as often, and furnaces might not be firing near as much, but no matter where you live, it is always a good idea to make sure that every system in your home is operating as efficiently as possible.

Gas Furnaces Are the Standard
While you'll see baseboards and radiators in San Antonio, gas furnaces and forced air heating systems are the systems of choice for efficient home heating. Effective and affordable, these units are capable of producing more than enough heat to temper the harshest winters in the nation, and are more than enough for a place like San Antonio. Heating systems are not infallible, however; they wear out over time, and even though southern Texas residents might not use them as frequently, all that dormancy can have an effect on the system, too.

A discourse the size of a US Department of Energy report could be relayed about the potential for newer sources of home heating, but this type of comprehensive treatment can't match one simple tip for homeowners in San Antonio: gas furnaces should be checked during the off-season. Think about it. San Antonio heating repair contractors aren't the busiest people on the planet, but if you call for service when the demand and urgency are high, you'll be competing with other homeowners and might have to deal with scheduling issues or higher prices. In colder areas of the country, it is often recommended that heating systems be inspected annually; in San Antonio, gas furnaces probably won't need that kind of attention, but you should at least turn on your system a month or so before cold weather is expected to test it out and make sure there are no obvious problems.

The Newer Alternative
Though popular, furnaces aren't the only heating option available in San Antonio. Heating systems should fit their environments, and in warm climates your best bet is to look at heating technology that can also serve as air conditioning during the hot summer. Heat pumps, for example, work by transferring heat between your home and the outside air. During the winter, they grab warm air particles that are present even in freezing temperatures and pull them into your home. During the summer, the process is reversed, as the heat pump pulls warm air out of your home, similar to a refrigerating unit. Because they work with energy already present in the air, these units are extraordinarily energy-efficient.

Heating Repairs
Heat pumps can certainly be efficient, but no matter what kind of system you have in place for heating (or cooling, for that matter!), nothing performs its best if it is neglected. One of the worst things you can do with any system in your home is ignore a problem when it presents itself. It's true that San Antonio heating system repair is probably not as pertinent a task as heating repair in Fargo, North Dakota, but pollution and high energy costs know no boundaries. Keep your system in good working order, and when you notice a problem, have it attended to ASAP.

Cost of Heating Systems
Heat pumps aren't cheap by any means, but chances are you can find a model that isn't any more expensive than a new gas furnace, and one that will still more than take care of your heating needs in south central Texas. New San Antonio gas furnaces are reasonably energy-efficient in their own right, but at the very least, you should talk to an HVAC contractor about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each type of installation before making a decision. Be sure to ask about energy efficiency, life expectancy, reliability, dual-purpose heating and cooling units, and of course, cost. Even if you don't see yourself purchasing a new heating system in the near future, remember that whether you live in Fargo or San Antonio, heating repair is the key to keeping your existing unit running as efficiently as possible for as long as possible. With regular maintenance, even older San Antonio furnaces and heat pumps won't be a burden on your wallet (or the environment)!
