Comment: House was built in 1951. The insulation is probably original. The attic has gable end vents, peak vent, and attic fan. I believe the attic fan has bitten the dust, but as I understand it, they aren't very cost efficient anyway. There is also a whole house fan. In the summer and winter the temperatures upstairs can vary from downstairs by 5 degrees or more. Last night when the attic vent fan went out, it was unbearable trying to sleep even with the A/C on. Based on my own research the solution isn't to fix the fan it's probably to apply more/replace the insulation that exists and/or add a radiant barrier (which I also hear good and bad about).
