Tile is a beautiful addition to any home and grouting your tile with matching or contrasting colors is a great way to add design and creativity to any tile floor or wall. But unless tile and grout are properly cleaned they can become filthy and the lovely colors can be diminished in appearance. Also dirty grout can become a health hazard and breeding ground for bacteria. If you are concerned about having a professional clean your tile and grout, here are a few things to consider about the costs

What is grout and why should I have it cleaned?

Grout is the mixture of cement, sand, and water that is filled between floors tiles - ceramic tiles, mosaic tiles or any other tile during installation. Grout is porous and will easily absorb grease, dirt, mold, mildew and lime scale. The soils, dirt, grime, and spills create marks and patches on the grout joints of the tile floor, and subsequently make the entire floor look dirty and unattractive. Unclean floors can also lead to the growth of bacteria which makes for an unsanitary living or working space.

What if I do not clean my tile and grout?

If not cleaned properly grout and tile can grow harmful microbes, and mold. This will not only result in foul odors and the potential spread of disease, but without regular cleaning the grout then becomes more and more difficult to clean. Its porous nature will begin to absorb all the bacteria and harmful mold that accumulates. Tile and grout cleaning becomes more difficult and challenging the longer the floor is neglected.

Cleaning Equipment and Supplies

Grout is difficult to clean and requires extra care and special tile and grout cleaning equipment. The best way to clean tile and grout effectively is with steam cleaning. Tile steam cleaning machines can be rented, but the job is more thoroughly accomplished by a tile and grout cleaning professional who not only has experience but most likely possesses industrial strength equipment. Although it may be cheaper to do it yourself, it will actually not be as cheap as you may think. Once you rent the equipment, pick it up, learn how to use it, but the correct cleaning solutions and chemicals and return the equipment, you may have spent not only a lot of money, but your entire day on the process! A professional may seem like more money upfront, but with their experience and equipment could be in and out of your home in a few hours.

Tile & Grout Square Footage

The largest single cost factor in the price of cleaning your tile and grout is the square footage of the area you need to have cleaned. Most pros will charge a price per square foot that includes time and materials.

Amount of Grime

If it has been a very long time since your tile and grout were cleaned the cost of cleaning may be higher. Ask a pro to give you an assessment and quote ahead of time so you don't have any surprises on the other end! But you may find that some professionals will charge more based on the level of dirt and grime and the amount of time since your last cleaning.

Not a good number.  Would prefer to know the cost per square foot to relate it to my own area.

I have an estimate of clean tile and grout for two baths, including floors.  One bath with shower with  tiles on 3 walls, small floor.  The other bath has a tub, 3 tiled walls, and small floor.  The third bath is just clean and fix dings in tub, clean acrylic shower, and seal grout on porcelain tiles for $1,400.00 for all three baths.  Still has not done, company, too busy, and could not find anyone else local.

How do you figure cost if you don't know the amount of area to be cleaned? That would be helpful

Measure the width times the length to get the sq. foot of the project.  Then tell the contractor how many sq. feet you have, and they will tell you how much it costs.
