They did an outstanding job. They were always on time, very professional and took particular care with their work. My husband and I were very pleased with the work and would love to refer them to friends. Our floors look brand new. It was a pleasure to do business with them.

Ideas & Inspiration from Bronx Flooring & Carpet Contractors

Bronx Wood Floor Refinishing

The northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, the Bronx is well known for its iconic zoo, top-tier university, and famous ballpark. In the 21st century, the Bronx is undergoing a revival all its own. Because it is priced far more reasonably than its southerly neighbors, Manhattan and Brooklyn, young people, artists, and retirees are flocking to the Bronx as a more affordable yet accessible alternative that is within a reasonable distance from Manhattan.

Like most of New York, the historic homes and new builds of the Bronx include large, commanding multi-unit condos and apartments, alongside modest townhouses, multi-family rental units, and even a few impressive free-standing mansions. Standing out in the competitive NYC market, however, means always putting your home's best foot forward, which includes paying attention to details such as refinishing wood floors.

Local Cost for Wood Floor Refinishing

With historic buildings located from one end of the borough to the other, refinishing the wood floors in a Bronx home is rather commonplace. However, because it is part of the greater NYC-metro area and most contractors travel for work, average prices include what people pay in all five boroughs. To that effect, the average wood floor refinishing job in the Bronx costs $1,511 with most reporting costs between $967 and $2,060. This is on par with the national average of $1,552 for a 300-square-foot room.

Licensing and Qualifications Needed

The City of New York requires all contractors to obtain a license. Especially when working inside historic buildings, it is also often necessary for contractors to obtain a permit for any restoration or remodeling work completed. These contractors must also purchase general liability insurance policies worth a minimum of $2,000,000.

Homeowners can check the status of any contractor's license in New York City at the city's website, located here

Other Projects to Consider

Sometimes refinishing wood floors is not enough, and sometimes it is too much. Other times, something in the middle will do. It’s important to consider other options for refreshing and revitalizing wood floors, especially in historical homes, if you want the best end results.

Discuss with your contractor whether wood floor repair is needed in spots where there is a lot of wear or rot. Alternately, if the condition of the floor is adequate, a simple resealing might be all that you need. Finally, in severe cases, especially in renovations and in homes damaged by water or fire, it may be necessary to replace the wood floors completely.

Prominent Neighborhoods in the Bronx

At only 42 square miles, the Bronx is the second-smallest of the New York boroughs with just over 1.4 million residents. Most locations within the Bronx boast easy access to Manhattan thanks to several major highways including the Bronx River Parkway, Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95), and the Major Deegan (I-87) as well as mass transit options including more than 70 subway stations served by six separate lines and two commuter rails (the Harlem and Hudson lines).

Neighborhoods in the Bronx date back generations, with many enclaves and buildings as old as the city itself. However, the hands of time, urban renewal projects, and rising and falling crime rates throughout the years have changed the face of several of these neighborhoods several times over. As Bronx real estate begins to pick up, a few key players in the market stand out from the rest:

Riverdale

Riverdale is a unique area within the five boroughs because it offers large, spacious single-family homes around 3,000 square feet in the $2-$4 million range. This upper middle class area is decidedly suburban and includes a variety of early 20th-century mansions alongside 1950s and 1960s brick-style low-rise buildings converted to co-ops.

Mott Haven

Because of its South Bronx location and easy commute, Mott Haven is a really popular area for young people looking to cash in on the revitalization of the borough. With many investors looking to reshape the area, Mott Haven is primarily rentals, so homes move fast and include units in 25-story modern tower apartment buildings, single-family waterfront homes, and converted lofts.

Highbridge

Highbridge is located just south of Yankee Stadium on the banks of the Harlem River in the central-western part of the borough. It offers some unique architecture including Art Deco apartment buildings and Victorian mansions, as well as affordable living in 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom co-ops with median prices in the $80,000-$300,000 range.

Fordham

Aside from the university of the same name, the Fordham, located at the west end of the Bronx, offers other well-known landmarks such as the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. With a large student population and a variety of old New York cultural enclaves such as the Bronx Little Italy, homes in this area are primarily multi-family units, condos, co-ops, and townhomes.
