An attic fan is installed at the roof level of your home and regulates the heat level by exhausting hot air. An attic fan requires additional roof vents to draw in fresh air as the hot air is exhausted. They operate during the heat of the day, ventilating the attic space only. If the fan isn't fixed, heat will continue to build up and cause temperature problems in the rest of your home.

Fan accessibility

How easy is it to get to your attic fan? If it is trapped in a tiny space that is difficult to find and access, then this could add to the cost of repair. If there is no room to get to the attic fan, it might need to be removed for repair or replacement.

What is broken?

Electrical: If the problem is electrical it could be as simple as a blown fuse or a bad connection. This is easily diagnosed by plugging other electrical devices into the same outlet and then plugging your attic fan into a different outlet. If the one outlet is not working, then it is an easy and inexpensive fix. If none are working, the problem extends far past the attic fan.
Thermostat: If your fan is controlled by a thermostat, try turning your attic fan switch on and off and bypassing the thermostat. If that works then you know it is the thermostat. Repair varies in price depending on the problem, and it might be cheaper to replace.
Motor: The most expensive attic fan repair is the motor. Once you rule out electrical and thermostat problems, it is the most likely culprit. If the motor is not operating, you will need to have it repaired or replaced, and either option's price depends on what exactly the issue is in the motor.

Replace instead of repair?

The time to replace instead of repair your attic fan is when the cost of repair far exceeds the cost of replacement. If the two are close in price then repairing it is the better option. There may be hidden costs in replacement such as uninstalling and disposing of the old fan to install the new one.

Energy savings

An attic fan can save you a lot on your energy bills as it can cool down your home instead of using air conditioning. A faulty attic fan may cost a lot to repair, but you may make up the difference with the energy savings.

If the cost to repair or replace is more than $150., then it pays to install a new window air conditioner or portable air conditioner.  This will cool much better than a new fan, although it will generate a much higher electric bill.

I'll dig out my paperwork on the old fan (15 yr.) and find one of the same quality and purchase.
Then hire a pro to replace.
