Hello Polyglots,

Ahead of the global WP Translation Day, I want to request to change the name of the Romansh locale from “Rumantsch Vallader” to “Rumantsch Grischun”. The ISO 639-3 code for the Romansh language is roh.

Why?

First of all, this locale has never really been active. Translations are at 0%. Second, the ISO code is for the overall Romansh language, whereas Rumantsch Vallader is only one of many idioms of it. There’s many more idioms, just like there are many dialects in Swiss German. However, there’s one official written language in common use now — Rumantsch Grischun. If we want this locale to be at 100%, we need to use this official written language, not an idiom (of which the translation editor is inactive anyway).

Finally, I want to revive the locale. I do not speak it myself, but some of my friends do and I’m asking them to join us in Zurich for a local contributor day on November 12th. In addition to that, there are some people who have previously translated Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird which might be interested in helping out. There’s also Lia Rumantscha, an official institution aiming to keep the language alive.

Perhaps I could be added as a translation editor as well, as I can help out with some of the basic translations as it’s often similar to Italian and for Rumantsch Grischun even people speaking an idiom often need to use a dictionary. Plus, I know the system very well.
