PTEonboarding documents

In the last week’s chat, Birgit brought up a great point about how hard it is for new PTEs and theme/plugin developers to understand the whole translator approval process.

She drafted two docs as “skeletons”:

Several people (@Nao @tobifjellner @zetaraffix) have made comments in the second document, so that one will be used for the continued work, going forward.

@coachbirgit will soon finalize the first version of this document. It will be one document with some special notes for developers. This is meant to function as a skeleton. Each locale is free to adjust it to their needs and translate, if they want.

Even if a locale decides to use this document in English, there are certain things they may want to add themselves, like: chat resources, people you may contact, language resources, locale style guide…

@nao suggested that it might be useful for developers if it would be possible to create one document in English, which would describe the situation for most locales in one place.

@coachbirgit commented that some general documents would be good, both aimed at translator and at developers. In addition, this “skeleton” document may be used by locales when they describe their particular rules and processes. Currently, some limited information of this type is hidden deep inside the FAQ section of our handbook. @nao suggested that a page aimed at developers might have the topic “How to get your plugin/themes translated” or similar, since not all people know about our internal terminology (PTE, GTE, etc.) Perhaps it could be good to even have some graphic explanation of the various roles we have defined.

A short discussion followed about the need for locale sites to have their own handbook pages. (Related ticket https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/1919 ) Further discussion whether special handbook functionality would be needed may be done in that ticket.

@wolly pointed out that one may use certain styles to position a TOC in the left margin on a Rosetta page and gave an example:

Conclusion on the PTEonboarding discussion:

  • The PTEonboarding draft is in a good shape to get a transfer to polyglots/handbook
  • As long as the local sites don’t have a handbook functionality, we suggest a HTML code snippet for TOCs on local sites pages
  • Local teams can decide if they want to translate the PTEonboarding skeleton into their language or only adjust it to their needs (links to slack, resscourcen etc.)

Several people offered their support in creating visual elements for the PTEonboarding project. @semblance_er @zetaraffix and @sheilagomes @coachbirgit will contact these people separately to discuss what can be done.

Other topics

On Friday (June 23) there was an issue where localized release packages disappeared for a short period of time, but that seems to be resolved now. If you notice anything strange in your list of releases, write a note in the channel #meta-i18n

  • @yoavf has worked on some amazing new features for translators on .com and we will be scheduling a meeting with him and @ocean90 to discuss what we can bring to .org

GWTD3

  • Finding leads for all areas is the next step
  • Then defining/confirming the date
  • No changes on the overall concept: 24h, spanning the whole world and talks

PTE onboarding

  • @coachbirgit opened the debate on how to handle PTE requests and add to the handbook
  • @nao @tobifjellner @wolly shared their documentation. Some existing docs: ja de it
  • @zetaraffix offered help for the design part. @sheilagomes already has some infographics. @tobifjellner proposed 2 entry points: 1. Aimed at developers 2. Aimed at users who want to contribute
  • A form on the dev side might be a good option/replacement for the current make/polyglots, but agreement with other teams are needed for that
  • proposal is to start with 2 simple docs: 1 for devs and 1 for PTEs/translators
  • Hashtag: PTEonboarding

Next steps:

  • Set goals for the event – discussed potential goals

    • Inform plugin authors on how to get their contributors in as translation editors (we can do some research and experimenting on that beforehand and present a case study)

  • Start organising – reaching out to local event organisers, create a strategy for the live streaming content, open call for speakers, set tasks, marketing, etc

Plugins layout change

Tabs are back. The translation part is now under the ‘Development’ tab (e.g. https://wordpress.org/plugins/bbpress/#developers)

Open Discussion

  • Would be great to have a way for a PTE/GTE to monitor the work they have left to do. An issue has been opened here by @tobifjellner https://github.com/GlotPress/GlotPress-WP/issues/702 . @pixelverbieger added that it’s frustrating for a contributor to add proposals and then nothing happens in days/weeks/months because no PTE/GTE is notified.
  • “Hello Dolly” is marketed as “the sample plugin”. But it would be good to have a new sample plugin or adapt the current one, which would be correctly prepared for i18n and translation. – @petya to check how we can manage that
  • Some answers to common developer questions are added here by @casiepa http://wp-info.org/pa-qrg/ It could be a starting point for reaching out to developers.

Rosetta outreach – collaboration with the community team

The Rosetta outreach aims to get more local content on local sites. Read about it here if you’ve missed this before.

At WordCamp London contributor day Petya discussed with the community team the idea of WordCamp organisers getting author/editor access to the Rosetta site for their location so that they can post event announcements and developments there as well as on their wordcamp sites.

Next steps:

  • Being on the standard wordpress.org/plugins page, a link is displayed to localized version of the plugin if they exist directly under the header. e.g. ‘Deze plugin is ook beschikbaar in Nederlands (ook: Italiano, Français).’
  • Proposed changes to the current layout should be suggested on the meta trac.

Five new locale requests have been processed and are waiting to be finalized.

WCEU contributor day

WCEU contributor day gathers more Polyglots on the ground than any other WordPress event. Besides onboarding new contributors, that gives the experienced Polyglots among us an opportunity to get together and discuss important issues as well as break out in sessions and work on global projects. Let’s see who’s going and decide what to discuss and work on.
