They were so nice and accommodating; we had a friend run very late and they didn't rush us at all. Even when the restaurant closed and we were still eating because of the delay. the food was great too. I know this place usually gets mixed reviews but we were there on a good day.

Exceptional service but felt rushed because they were closing at 9pm with our 6:45 reservation for 18 on Christmas Eve. A bit noisy for our hearing impaired gents but LOVED the square table which allowed for conversation! Thank you for a lovely nite and great food and service!

The food was good but the risotto, which I've had a couple of times before, was off. Perhaps a new or different chef? I was kinda disappointed. It won't stop me from going back and try again.
The service was impeccable, as usual.

Despite noting in Open Table reservation that it was a) my birthday and b) I wanted a table, not booth seat, neither was acknowledged at check-in. Despite the fact that it was only 8pm, the restaurant was essentially empty and the waitstaff were more focused on cleaning the restaurant than attending to newly arrived guests. After a lengthy wait for service, we left for another establishment. Cannot rate the food because we did not eat there.

The place was cold
The staff were very pleasant but obviously green and not well trained
Our calamari was cold. The meat balls had odd flavor with very thick tomato sauce with too much sugar!
Burger and salmon were good tasting.
Good wine list on the expensive side.
Make sure you have your valet parking validated, otherwise they rip you off with $30!!!,!

It had been several years since we had been to La Pastaia. This evening did not go so well. We arrived at 5:30 well before theatre goers. We went to the matinee. So they were not busy. Reason for going was that online they featured a "Sound of Music" prix fixed menu. When we arrived and they presented us the menu it was their regular menu. We asked about the special menu. They stated they had a large party in the private dining room so they were not serving this menu. We were very disappointed. Why wasn't menu taken off the site for the evening? We didn't get up and leave since that would entail another walk to some place else. Our meals were ordered which included a pizza. Pizza chef cooked pizza and sat on counter for 10+ minutes while the pasta dish was being made. If I hadn't been watching the counter and saw 4 people check pizza I would have been served a luke warm pizza. When I told waiter about pizza he took it back, shared with manager and a fresh hot pizza was served. Restaurant did the right thing but our dinner was a little off. Not very happy. Restaurant needs to work on coordinating meals better and having enough staff on hand before the rush comes during theatre nights. Might help?

If you are in downtown San Jose, CA and looking for a fine restaurant, La Pastaia may just be your spot of choice. The menu has a fine variety of choices, from casual meals to OSSO BUCO...the wine list and bar choices are top notch. One great advantage for this restaurant is its downtown central location, and yes, close to SAP center... do you enjoy a great hockey game? This is not a sports bar.. this is a fine eatery. Enjoy!

We went, even after reading all the recent putdowns, because it was close and we were on foot. There was only one other table of people there the whole evening (between 5:30 and 7:30), the service was excellent, and the food was very good. Perhaps we simply lucked out, or perhaps the owner has been reading the reviews. . .

La Pastaia has continued its downward spiral and this visit is definitely my last (the previous 2 visits had been disappointing). We ate here before a concert at SAP, just a short walk away, but the restaurant was empty. The fried kale appetizer was very greasy. We had to send back the prosciutto pizza as inedible. (The "prosciutto" tasted very "off" a like spoiled meat.) Their pizza crust tasted and looked pre-made. The pizza was undercooked. We ordered the margherita pizza instead. It had cold raw tomatoes. Even my White Russian cocktail wasn't made correctly. We left hungry.

Disappointed. Not offered bread and when we asked after salad and soup we weee advised then it was $2 which we said fine but it was cold. Pumpkin ravioli trenched in oil and even asked if I wanted refill on my coffee restaurant wasn't crowded at all I'll be just as nice it was not a good experience I'm not going back there .

Food was just ok and didn't arrive hot to the table. Appetizer and salads came out quickly but we waited 20 minutes after finishing those before we received the entree. Overall it was not a good value for the price we paid.

The service was very slow. Sat next to large window and the sill was so dirty with dust and food was not very appetizing. Over charged for one of our entree salads. Ordered butter lettuce and mixed green salad it was all romaine. The dressing had no taste at all. Had to ask numerous times for refills on water and ice tea. Our salads took 30 minutes thought it might have been the added chicken but the chicken was cold clearly not just cooked. It was our go to restaurant before sport and concert events at SAP arena. Need to find a new place!

Our friends group has been dining at La Pastaia for over 10 years. This is the first time we've had such a lousy experience. The bottom line: I explained everything to the manager, who comped us a large portion of our bill and apologized multiple times. Details follow:
Reservations made with Open Table a few days in advance for 6, one vegan. We altered it to 5 in the end. Three of the dishes were served timely and enjoyed. One of the entrees was served before the expected soup, which showed up after he had eaten most of the entree.
Two dishes were ordered as vegan alternatives (veggie side dishes with meat and dairy removed). Each one arrived at separate times with no changes and were sent back. The third time one arrived soaked in butter (which is dairy) and so salty it was inedible. When the waiter asked, he was informed it wasn't edible. He said he would comp us the uneaten dish. We thanked him.
When the bill came, the only item on it was the one dish he said he comped. After being unable to catch his attention, I took the bill to host table where he saw me and came over. I asked to understand the intention. He said he gave us the wrong bill. While standing waiting for him to get the right bill I asked to speak to the manager. He brought the "right" bill but included the inedible dish. I asked him to check it again. He took it away.
Then the manager came. I explained everything above, said we've been coming for years. she said she'd like to credit us back for our trouble. I told her that was unnecessary. Normally we just wouldn't return to a restaurant, but we like it here and would like to keep coming back, so wanted to let her know. She apologized and insisted on the credit.
Unrelated: they no longer accept Passport Cards.

An absolutely dreadful experience.
After a long absence, decided to try the restaurant again because we'd really enjoyed the food and ambiance previously.
The service and attitude was shocking. No one approached us for 15 minutes after we were seated. Then the manager drifted by and asked if we were enjoying the evening. Told him about the wait and he reluctantly took our cocktail order.
Waited another 10 minutes for only one cocktail to arrive. The waiter said only one drink had need ordered. And it was wrong. And served with the waiter's fingers all around the rim of the glass.
I asked to speak to the manager and again waited, before getting up to walk over and talk to him. "Oh", he said. "We're understaffed". That with fewer than one quarter of the tables occupied.
Sad to see what a once great restaurant has come to.

Terribly slow service even though we were one of only three tables in the entire restaurant because we had an early dinner. The waitress was incredibly inattentive, and the pasta portions were ridiculous. My 9-year old was offered a "half portion" of ravioli. This half portion consisted of three raviolis, and our full dinner portions were six tiny ravioli's each. We would have gotten way more food, better service, and more fun ambience down the street at nearby Spaghetti Factory. First and only time here.

Good food but the service was a bit lacking. We were the only people in the restaurant because our reservation was at 5:00. I guess we were too early for some menu items to be ready which was frustrating. The restaurant was open so the appetizer items should be ready. Also we ordered a salad which we never got. Our entrees came so we cancelled the salad. Would be a little easier to understand if they were crowded but there was literally no one else there.

The food was excellent in taste and presentation. My son said it was some of the best spaghetti and meatballs ever (since he orders this at every restaurant, he should know!). The root vegetables and butternut squash ravioli were excellent.

Ate here prior to a performance at SAP Center. Restaurant, including the manager, was well aware of this but kitchen totally unprepared. The two of us arrived for our reservation at 6:00pm, were seated right away and ordered promptly. We inquired about our order several times. The food arrived at 7:20pm! We left at 7:40pm. Don't eat here if you have anything planned afterward.

Our go to restaurant anytime there is an event at the SAP center, we went before the Sting/Peter Gabriel show and again before the Adele show. Though we had a lot of issues before the Garth Brooks show, these past two occasions were very enjoyable. The service provided by Cathy was very good, she was considerate of the timing for the concert and even helped us manage our drink orders since the bar was so busy.
Though we have tried other downtown restaurants before concerts and sporting events, none are as enjoyable as La Pastaia.

The restaurant on Saturday night was incredibly loud, not just lively as one might expect, but I had incredible difficulty hearing what my companions across the table were saying without them speaking above a normal conversational tone.
The food was good, though not particularly inventive and the wine list had some interesting bottles on it.

I am not a foodie, but my wife and I have dined in some of the best restaurants around the world and we regularly dine in fine restaurants.
We picked this restaurant by mistake. We intended to go to its sister night-club/restaurant next door that had live jazz music. They share kitchen, so my comments about food probably apply there.
How's the food: very, very good. Not Michelin star level, but close to the 1 star level. As a matter of fact, it was better than a Michelin 1-star I visited in London. (But then, that is UK :-) So, the food is both inventive and well prepared. The wine list is extensive --nothing famous, but a good selection.
Ambiance: well, everybody was next door, so the place was quiet :-) However, I like that. The jazz club was too noisy for my taste.
Service: very warm and personal. Could be a bit more attentive and also more informed, but I liked it a lot.
Pricing: one of the best values around. Actually, I can't think of a better value for the food and wine on offer.
