Project: Build or Install a Concrete Swimming Pool
I have been a long time customer of Home Advisor. This is the first bad rating that I have ever given a contractor. First off this was my biggest job that I have done cost wise (a little under $70,000). This contractor was primarily chosen because he presented a fancy design drawing and plan layout. However, this is the only positive things I can say about Don and his company Advanced Pools & Spas. I dealt directly with the owner Don many times after my first contact with his representative and was not happy with the service I received. They were never on time to any of our appointments. When we finally agreed to do a contract, he refused to put in writing a completion date but verbally told me that it would take about two months. I explain to Don before we signed the contract that he may run into some issues with our poorly graded property. I also mention that rock was discovered when I put in my backyard fence. It was clear to him that my grading problem was the main reason for building a pool. I stated to Don that the longer this project took to complete, the more my home business would suffer. After assuring me that he understood all of my issues, we signed the contract on 24th of April. Nevertheless, Advanced Pools did not even start my dig for over four weeks later and blamed the weather each time they canceled. I replied back to them several times saying that I had checked the forecast and it had projected rain for most of the week. I was rescheduled on days that everyone knew it was supposed to rain. Because of this, about a month has past with no work done. Several times I had questioned them on why they could not work on Friday thru Sunday to make up for time lost and I was told they did not work on those days. When Don and company finally did come out, I got excuses about how busy he was with his other customers. Finally, Don and crew showed up at my house, ignoring my warning about the rock in the yard and came unprepared with a small Bobcat type of digger, which could only remove the sod from the surface. Don called me a few hours later saying he would now have to hire someone else to do the digging job. When I got home I also found that his crew cut my cable line. I was out of cable and internet service and internet for one week. Due to this my home business suffered a lost of $2,000. The contract we signed now had virtually no meaning. He could not tell me how long it would take to complete the job, how much it would cost or when he could get someone to do the dig. On top of the four week delay due to so called weather, two more weeks went by while his third partly contactor had to fit me into his schedule. In interim, I had another pool company (from Home Adviser) asses his work and came to the conclusion that Advanced Pools did not use proper tools to do what should have been a normal dig. Meanwhile we started to approach the end of June in a contract with no boundaries while cancellations from Advanced Pools continued to arise for one reason or another. Finally, after Advanced cancelled my appointment on Friday June 19 and then another cancellation again on Monday June 22, I decided to fired them and cancel my contract. In addition to the $2,000 I lost from my home business due to their delay, I had to pay for the damages they did to my cable. I also paid them a down payment of $500 and then they requested that I pay them another $700 for permits and so-called other expense in order to cancel the contract. For all of this, what I got in return was a jacked up lawn and backyard which continues to cause my home business to suffer. Needless to say, I think this company is a disorganized, poorly ran nonprofessional business. I will also go as far as to say that Advanced Pools & Spas in my opinion are unethical and I would never ever recommend them to anyone.
Response by Advanced Pools & Spas, LLC: In response to review by Andrew W.: We did contract with him to build a pool; we discussed leaving the dirt from the pool onsite as well as drainage. I told him we would make it drain correctly and leave it ready for the landscaper. There was no sign of any rock prior to our initial attempt to excavate. On the first day of excavation, we uncovered a rock backyard with 6 inches of clean fill dirt and sod on top of it. It only took a couple of hours to uncover this, and it was evident that any machine we would typically use would not be to his advantage and would probably not be able to get the job done. We immediately notified Andrew of the situation and gave him his options: 1- Cancel your contract with us or 2- Go with a large track hoe that could probably handle the rock. We could not guarantee it would do the job, due to the fact that until the hole is complete, nothing is an absolute. He elected to go forward so we arranged for the machine to be delivered. The machine was in route and we received a call from Homeadvisor that the customer wanted to cancel the contract. We had to call the machine off. Andrew then claimed that he never said that, but it was a recorded conversation with Homeadvisor, which proved otherwise. He apologized at that time, and asked that we please do the job. We rescheduled to get back on track, and Andrew began demanding a completion date within a very short time period. We could not commit and told him so, due to the many variables involved. He threatened to cancel the contract again, at which point we agreed that it would apparently be best for both parties involved. Regarding the phone lines, a utility locate was done and is always done prior to any type of excavation. He could have had a temporary line run and it would have been fixed within 48 hours. We take his words of 'non-ethical' extremely insulting. We only tried to help him out to save as much money as possible for him, as we do with any customer when a major problem comes up, such as solid rock throughout the pool area. We hope his pool turned out great and he is enjoying it. It is and was apparent to our company that his unexpected delays and cost were being used to make us the bad guy when it was the opposite. We were waiting on his decisions to proceed. His entire review was based on the very first construction phase, excavation, which is always subject to potential problems.
