They came up with a solution that included putting an insert in our fireplace and removing the top 7 rows of unstable bricks from the chimney, then capping it, all for the price of tearing down and rebuilding the chimney with no insert. I'm in my sixties, so all prices give me sticker-shock, to be honest.

Comment: I have a large natural rock fireplace that is leaking along one side where it goes through the roof. (There is no attic,) The house is 40 years old. 22 years ago I had a 6" layer of styrofoam, then a layer of plywood added added on top the original roof. Comment: I have a floor to ceiling brick fireplace. Hearth is 13 feet wide, fireplace is 8 ft wide, combined are 9 ft tall. About 1000 bricks in size. It is on a concrete slab that has dropped about 2 inches. The slab can not be pumped up with concrete as there is HVAC running under it. The fireplace is leaning into the room about 2 inches. I'm considering removing the fireplace, which is in a room that is sunk by 2 steps. Putting in a new floor that would be at the same level as the adjacent rooms. Adding a wood burning free standing stove and having that connect to the remaining chimney. The chimney appears to be plumb. This quote would be in 2 parts. 1 removal of the fireplace, 2 addition of the wood stove.
