The East North Central region was hit particularly hard by the recession and its impacts on the auto industry, as evidenced by price-per-square-foot real estate costs in hard-hit cities like Flint, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio.

With an average per-square-foot cost of $170, the vibrant college town of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has the highest-priced real estate in the East North Central region — and Chicago suburb Naperville comes in second, with an average per-square-foot cost of $161.

Interestingly, because Naperville’s $104,419 average household income is the highest in America, Naperville’s residents may be better able to afford the higher costs.
