Vinyl Gutters

Vinyl gutters are cheap, lightweight, offer the widest range of colors and easy to install. But they're prone to leaks between sections and they often don't last as long as their metal counterparts.

Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum gutters are almost as inexpensive as vinyl. They're also lightweight, corrosion-resistant and easy to install, which is why they're so popular. But if you don't get the heavier gauge, they're easily bent.

Steel Gutters

Steel gutters are stronger and more durable than aluminum and they cost more. Stainless steel kicks up the price even higher, but it will hold up to years of heavy rains without rusting.

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are ridiculously expensive. They're also fairly durable. But that's not why they're used. Those who install copper gutters are going for elegance and beauty. Regularly treated with sealer, copper gutters can keep that rich look for years. Or you can just let the copper oxidize, developing an interesting Old World look.

Wood Gutters

Another material chosen strictly for its looks, wood is considerably cheaper than copper or even steel. But it requires tons of maintenance to keep it water resistant. In the long run, expect a lot of headaches.

Gutter Guards or Covers

Gutter covers can be more expensive than the gutters themselves. They're designed to keep leaves, twigs and other debris out of your gutters, and the good ones work effectively, saving you hours in labor. They can be installed as new gutter-and-cover units or placed over existing gutters. Few are 100-percent maintenance free, though. So if you think you can install covers and never climb on the roof again, you could be setting yourself up for more damage than you'd have had without the covers.
