Bedroom Cost Guides

Whether an extensive remodel, new addition or simply sprucing up your space, the changes will increase your home's value. You may need a variety of people to make it happen: electricians, plumbers, construction workers, tile layers, drywall experts and decorators. The size and scope will affect everything, especially your budget. The larger the space, the more you will spend in both labor and materials. You must also consider the quality of your materials. If your bedroom is large, you may choose lower-priced carpeting rather than natural hardwood flooring, a simple paint job rather than high-priced wallpaper, or plain window shades rather than floor to ceiling draperies.

General Contractor

You may want to consider hiring an additions and remodeling contractor if you are going to do work that entails a lot of building. You can save yourself a lot of hassle by having one who works for you and manages the project. The general contractor is responsible for managing the entire job from start to finish. They will be the one to provide the estimate or bid, and they will be the one to find the materials, hire subcontractors, lease vehicles (trucks, cranes, backhoes, etc.), and maintain all accounting and personnel records. They will also be the one who has accepted total liability for the project at-hand. General contractors aren't inexpensive, but what you spend on them should save you money in the long run. You can also hire a professional organizer to help you should you intend to do the remodel yourself.   Continue Reading

Materials

Whatever kind of bedroom design or remodel you're undertaking will involve different materials, which means the total cost will fluctuate. If you're intending to remodel or create a whole new bedroom, you will need to take into account paying for the structural materials, as well as the interior decorations. Research more on these items so you can have a budget in mind. If you intend to just spruce up the bedroom with new furniture and linens, then you will most likely pay less than a complete remodel or addition.

Interior Decorator

If you've ever thought about working with an interior decorator, some doubts might have stopped you from continuing. However, using one should be a good experience. It can give your home continuity, function, and beauty.
Your decorator won't be able to create the perfect room for you unless you're able to communicate just what you want. Collect photos from magazines of rooms and furniture you like (and those you dislike), since this will give your decorator a place to start in creating a design specifically for you. Decide on a budget. Plan a project with goals and phase in purchases over a few months, or years, if necessary. Make sure you're very clear on exactly how you'll be charged, when your decorator needs deposits, how you'll be billed, what you get, and when the work should be complete. Each decorator has a different way of working and various fee structures. Even if you don't want to spend a fortune, there are ways to hire one on a tight budget. Make sure that you hire someone that has you in mind and design for your taste and budget.

Interior Designer

Not to be confused with an interior decorator, interior designers work closely with architects and clients to determine the structure of a space, the needs of the occupants, and the style that best suits both. The position is a combination of engineer and artist, and it takes a unique type of mind to handle both of those concepts well. Interior designers have to be good with more than color, fabric, and furniture. They must know materials, have budgeting skills, communicate well, and oversee the ordering, installation, and maintenance of all objects that define a space. They also have to know about electrical capacity, safety, and construction.

Structural Engineer

If you decide to build a bedroom addition or remodel a current one, you may need to call a structural engineer. It depends on whether you decide to make structural changes to the room, since these engineers handle examining walls, plumbing, wiring and load-bearing walls. Consult with your general contractor as to whether you need one. An inspection by a structural engineer will be necessary in creating an addition and will help you towards meeting the building codes of your city.
