Reviews of New York Basement Finishing Contractors

Project: Remodel a Basement
Brooklyn, NY

The absolute best contractor. In 8 days Metro Renovations remodeled my bathroom. I would recommend them to a friend or colleague. They do fantastic work!

Project: Remodel a Basement
Fort Lee, NJ

JC Insulaters were great guys. In most ways, they went above and beyond. There were only 2 items that I did not like; despite implicit instructions, two tasks that were accomplished incorrectly were not resolved by the contractor. This became a concern, as I didn't want additional jobs to be completed incorrectly. Work ethics - great. Workmanship - good to great (some things better than others, but overall, very good). Pricing - great. They were willing to work within budget, offering good advice and tried to make everything work within your requests, including labor + mats.

Ideas & Inspiration from New York Addition & Remodeling Contractors

New York Basement Remodeling

In New York, basement remodeling is as diverse as the homeowners and residents who comprise the populace of the Big Apple. We've seen basement remodels range from a $6,000 basic makeover to a $70,000 comprehensive renovation and remodel. Regardless of the extent or size of your remodeling project, and whether you live in the middle of Manhattan, across the Jersey Shore, or well into Long Island, we can help you find the right contractor for the job.

Basement Finishing
The most basic form of basement remodeling is basement finishing. New York is a city where every square foot counts, and having a basement that isn't adequately polished is a terrible waste of space and property value. New York basement finishing is primarily concerned with sealing up any gaps that allow air (or even worse, water) to infiltrate and making the space suitable for storage of even delicate items. In and around New York, basement finishing is a relatively inexpensive project, but since it provides a space more suitable for storage than living, many homeowners find that it is well worth the additional investment it takes for a more formidable basement remodeling project.

Cost vs. Resale Value
While New York basement finishing is definitely going to make your cellar a nicer place to visit, the real benefits of New York basement remodeling are typically reaped from more involved projects. This doesn't mean that a simple waterproofing and polishing job isn't worth doing, but that taking a basic finishing project to the next level is probably a more beneficial option if you have the means to do it.

Comprehensive New York basement remodels are some of the smartest home improvement projects in the city, especially in terms of resale value. In a place with such high population density and property values, making the most of every inch is rarely a bad decision. Many New York basement remodeling projects recover more than 80 percent of their construction costs in additional resale value, and some recoup even more. This means if you spend $50,000 on a basement remodel, you can typically expect your property value to increase by about $40,000 or more! Of course, this is only an average and a large part of this figure (and the actual cost of the project) will be determined by the pre-existing condition of your basement.

No matter which route you choose, the highest priority for successful remodels should always be personal enjoyment and satisfaction. Treat your basement like you would a kitchen, bathroom, or other area on the main floor of your house, and you'll generally find your basement remodel to be worth it in the end.

Reasons for Remodeling
Basement remodels can be completed for a variety of reasons. For many families in New York, basement remodeling is done to enhance the house as a whole by providing a new family area/game room, an extra bedroom, a state-of-the-art home theater, a wet bar, or a studio space. For investors and households that need a little extra income, New York basement remodeling can culminate in an independent living space complete with its own kitchen and bathroom, which can then be rented out as an apartment.

Remodeling Considerations
The intended use for your basement will naturally dictate many of the installation choices you make. Stained concrete is a great way to create a low-cost, stunning basement floor but may not be a great option for a bedroom. On the other hand, carpeting should only be installed if your contractor is confident humidity levels are reasonable. Additional plumbing and electrical fixtures are also common components of extensive basement remodels and should be carefully considered before the project begins. You need reliable plumbing to protect your basement from additional water exposure, and smart lighting design will ensure household members purge concepts of basements as a dark, spooky place.

When planning a basement remodel, New Yorkers should also be aware of the types of alterations that tend to significantly drive up the price. While adding new flooring and lighting might be necessary expenses, changing the placement of plumbing lines, furnaces, and other common basement components can often be avoided. Be careful, though, when deciding which steps are worth skipping. As many homeowners have found out the hard way, forgoing a few slight alterations to the existing layout can be a mistake! Many folks have actually decided to go back and make these alterations months (or even years) after the initial remodel was completed, adding hassle and expense to the project as a whole.

Renovation Contractors
In New York, basement renovation contractors range from waterproofing subcontractors, general contractors who work on all types of renovations, and companies who specialize in basement remodels. You can find any number of professionals for your basement, but availability is always an issue where the best contractors tend to have full schedules, and less reliable contractors can be a homeowner's nightmare. HomeAdvisor can help this conundrum by putting you in touch with the best local contractors. We put each and every contractor through a rigorous 10-step screening process and provide homeowners with quality-controlled, online customer ratings and reviews. As soon as you submit your request, New York basement renovation contractors will begin to contact you. Be wary of estimates that are substantially lower or higher than the competition. You may also need to choose between a slightly higher estimate and getting your basement renovation completed on a quicker time schedule.
