Hello, My Gnomies!

I’ve had a Twitch account for a while, never really knowing how it would fit into the grander scheme of a day.

Then, late last night, I finally got around to fully connecting that Xbox One and getting the early access of Battlefront downloaded & installed. You’ve probably already watched my reaction video to initial gameplay (spoiler alert: that moment of awe is linked elsewhere in this update).

Seeing just how simple it was to get going with a game broadcast, I finally decided to make use of that Twitch account for the first time: http://twitch.com/chrispirillo – and where it goes from here is really not up to me so much as it’s up to seeing if the community would watch and interact there with regularity.

A platform with great engagement tools (outright) is benign; if nobody’s spending time making use of that tool, it’s pointless to keep it polished.

I’d imagine a new dream would be to wake up in the morning, roll into a studio, and begin to stream some kind of Star Wars (or “retro”) game. So many experiences could turn idea into a nightmare, however – and I plan on treading cautiously.

As soon as I take a shower tonight, because… well, I was too busy playing video games to worry about personal hygiene. You should be grateful that smell cannot be transmitted over the Internet. Yet.

Thanks to Aaron at Xbox, I’m finally going to be able to play Star Wars Battlefront tomorrow… on the Xbox One. Hello, My Gnomies!

When I first tried to start watching Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a few years back, I only made it through a couple of episodes before giving up. Then a friend (Michelle, who you might remember from the video I recorded eating a chocolate-covered grasshopper with me so many years ago) suggested I give it a shot one more time.

I did, and I’m glad I did.

Just when I think the show get any better, each week it does.

And “comic book” entertainment isn’t just for nerds, either.

Budgets for films might be higher, production value for them may be amped up, and the stories told from beginning-to-end are certainly tighter – but that doesn’t necessarily make them any better than their serialized counterparts. I truly consider the AoS effort one of the best parts of the MCU (“Marvel Cinematic Universe”), and it gives me hope for something similar in the Star Wars galaxy at some point in the future.

I’ve never been on the edge of my seat with Iron Man, Captain America, or The Avengers – but I’m quite involved at a substantially deeper level with characters who (and arcs that) seem to get second billing in comparison to their cinematic brethren & sistren.

I would rather see a long-form show last for several seasons, offering a hundred entertainment hours, than a big budget blockbuster once a year.

Hello, My Gnomies!

For the third time in the past month, I was given a free movie rental redeem code (directly from the company responsible for renting new movies to those who would take the time to look briefly at a kiosk screen). Of course, I took advantage of the offer once again – as passing up a free movie doesn’t sound like me at all.

Then again, sometimes I don’t see an array of new movies that seem like they’d be worth the price of free.

I’ve been willing to wait so long to see some films that by the time they’re ready for me to view at my own convenience, society has completely forgotten about them (or they were completely forgettable in the first place). And there aren’t many that I’d ever care to own on disc or digital, either.

As much as $1.50 for a night’s rental seems as close to free as it comes, truly “free” is even more costless.

Last week’s selection was “Spy,” and last month’s selection was the “Mad Max” reboot. Tonight’s selection is “Inside Out” – but instead of watching it right now, I’m telling you that I’m willing to wait this long to watch most movies out of cost and convenience. What would’ve cost our family $40 in the theater wound up costing nothing apart from knowing that my life would be fine in not experiencing a certain something sooner than others.

Hello, My Gnomies!

If there’s an item you can expect to see in every single store you walk into these days, it’s at least one Funko Pop Vinyl. These collectables are everywhere, and the full range spans a never-ending series of fandoms. I’ve been able to keep my collection manageable to this point, but it gets more and more difficult to avoid picking up just one more stylized character when I happen upon it at a reasonable price.

Knowing that I live in the Seattle area and am prone to adoring plastic, I was invited to tour the Funko headquarters yesterday (and coverage will be showing up in an upcoming vlog, so you’ll be able to experience some of that with me vicariously).

I didn’t leave empty handed, either. Hello, My Gnomies!

Look, I don’t care if you choose to ignore Valentine’s Day (which, I’m confident, is kept alive by the flower and chocolate industries) – but you just can’t look past today being both Stout Day and Donut Day. Or Doughnut Day, if you prefer to spell it that way.

I’ll definitely be celebrating this evening with a large bottle of w00tstout. In fact, I’ve been saving up a lot of today’s calories for it – because, yes, I have to watch my caloric intake if I care to keep this recent fat loss maintained. And stouts carry with them an insane amount of tasty calories.

And therein lies the rub: I can’t have BOTH a donut (or doughnut) and a stout today, so why didn’t these special interest groups better coordinate their plans for celebrating on the Internet? I have to pay attention if the word is a hashtag.

Until #StickYourFingerInThere Day happens.

To make sure I don’t get in trouble, will one of you out there please eat an extra donut (or doughnut) for me? I don’t know if I can make it through a second stout on my end, but… one is powerful enough for both of us. I should’ve posted this update earlier and you could’ve had time to get out to the store. Unless you can make donuts (or doughnuts) at home.

Hello, My Gnomies!

Yesterday, I finally received the new-fangled ViewMaster. The virtual reality product was announced long ago, and I knew I wanted to give it a shot eventually: affordable VR with nostalgic brand value. I didn’t pay for it, though – I just converted some of my http://featu.re/pirillo points into a free Amazon gift card to cover the cost.

In theory, this device is nice. In practice, it’s the first toy in history to have given me a headache with nausea (motion sickness) in using it for less than ten minutes. Given that my wife suffered the same fate (and our daughter is entirely too young to operate the thingy), it won’t be sticking around for much longer.

You might remember that I had the same, immediate problem with Minecraft a while ago (as well as any mobile first person shooter game). My body didn’t always seem to react this way, though. Maybe it’s getting allergic to technology?

I’m far from alone, too. There are many of us who simply cannot (physically) handle this type of experience – and it’s not for a lack of wanting. I really do think that Mattel has built a solid product, but it’s not something I can come close to recommending again until – or unless – they find a way to combat vomit-inducing playtime for people like me.

Hello, My Gnomies!

What’s the Internet Outrage of the Day? I’m glad you asked (because, inevitably, there’s at least one – and you will often find yourself being forced to fall on one side or the other).

And if you’re not with us, you’re against us.

So, you must make up your mind about the change that Twitter just made; whereas you used to ignore using the Favorite button as a star on Twitter, they’re hoping you’ll ignore it less now that it’s a heart.

I didn’t realize people cared that much about iconography – but they do. At least, until the next Internet Outrage tomorrow (which may very well have nothing to do with anything remotely relevant to your life, but you’ll likely find yourself continuing to ignore the Favorite button on Twitter).

I’ve been watching my stats closely over the past few hours. Normally, I see one tweet Favorite per hour – and I’m now averaging one POINT ONE Favorite tweets per hour. I suppose that’s an improvement, but I’m still left wondering how I made one tenth of a tweet this afternoon?

If you didn’t use the star, you’re not going to use the heart.

But you should start tapping those hearts a lot more – because some people out there don’t even have a heart at all.

Hello, My Gnomies!

Can you remember the very first time you watched video from the palm of your hand? I can, and it certainly wasn’t on a phone.

A long time ago (longer now than it seems), they had this contraption which would accept movie cartridges and allow you to hand-crank a dial to progress the filmstrip inside. Batteries were not included because it didn’t need any batteries – just an external light source.

It was the Fisher Price Movie Viewer – and I remember loving it more than any child (or adult) should ever love a gadget. You couldn’t download new movies to it, no – but it was practically perfect in every way. Imagine my elation when I’d visit someone else’s home and discover that they happened to have a piece of manually-driven content that I had not yet seen.

If you’re not already aware (because maybe you don’t frequent toy stores as much as I do – which is a mistake on your part): Fisher Price is rebooting a lot of these classics. From the rotary phone to the record player to this movie viewer. And, yes, our daughter is going to be receiving those three things from Santa Claus this Christmas.
