Industry-leading open platform

3DR doesn’t exist in a vacuum. We proudly support a vibrant global community of developers who are leading the way in commercial and consumer drone applications. Of course, lots of large companies like to tell a grassroots origin story, but for 3DR it’s truly existential—not only did what was to become the 3DR platform originate in the community, but for a long time they were our only customers.

Today that original developer community, DIYDrones, has grown into the largest open robotics community in the world, numbering over 65,000 and counting. And thanks to partnerships with industry leaders like Intel, Qualcomm and The Linux Foundation, 3DR’s shared open drone platform is also evolving exponentially.

Makers everywhere can now create their own apps for the platform (and for Solo) through DroneKit—3DR’s open application development platform for drones—and even take them to market for free via 3DR Services. The platform code itself is now stewarded by the international Dronecode Foundation, which welcomes and facilitates contributions of individuals and companies around the world.

Even a standalone 3DR product like Solo is a unified instantiation of this extensible platform. And thanks to Solo’s usability and processing capacity, it’s also one of the most important pieces, sure not only to drive innovation, but also to benefit from it.

Everyone is welcome to join and contribute. Explore the community below.
