Supercell is the name given to a continuously rotating updraft deep within a severe thunderstorm (a mesocyclone) and looks downright scary. They are usually isolated storms, which can last for hours, and sometimes can split in two, with one storm going to the left of the wind and one to the right.

This is NOT a lightening tornado! It's the eruption of Chile’s Chaitén volcano. The plume of ash is thought to generate enough static electricity to cause what is called a “dirty thunderstorm” in the same way that colliding ice particles provide the juice for regular thunderstorms. While this photo is often described as a tornado that hit in Georgia in 2012 it is NOT that. This powerful photograph is a real photo but does not show a tornado that struck Georgia, or anywhere else. This photo shows a volcanic eruption in Chile of the Chaitin volcano on May 3, 2008. Chaitin erupted at night during a storm ... the upward flow of ash, gases, etc. reacted with the lightning to cause the hellish lightning within the eruption flow itself.
Mother Nature at her awesome best. Makes for a spectacular photo, but I don't think I'd like to be nearby when a lightning struck tornado rocks by!!!

With the winter chill in high gear, photographer Thomas Zakowski has captured some beautiful images of frozen lighthouses to reflect just how cold temperatures can get. The photographer's spectacular shots reveal a lesser seen vision of lighthouses on Lake Michigan, each having been hit with waves of water that have succumb to the frigid temperatures, crystallizing in place. The almost haunting images are unbelievable examples of bitter cold weather. Though, with the US facing a polar vortex this week, it's easy for many Americans to believe each visually stunning image in Zakowski's collection. Traced with icicles, each 30-foot structure is transformed into a sort of frozen beast, yearning for warmer days. Perth Weather Live shows a towering red dust storm over the ocean ahead of the cyclone approaching Onslow on the West Australian coast on January 9, 2013.
Red Wave An intense dust storm in Western Australia allegedly led to the creation of a "red wave" off the coast of Onslow Wednesday evening. The Bureau of Meteorology said the spectacle was caused by a combination of wind and rain that kicked up rust-colored sand and dust into the air and forced the cloud of debris out to sea. The pictures depict a weather phenomenon similar to the 'haboob', a massive cloud of dust kicked up by strong winds, that struck Phoenix in the summer of 2011.

Mother Nature started working at sunset. A thunderstorm with gusts of up to 75 mph picked up sand and dust as it swept over Onslow and toward the Indian Ocean. The dust storm, called a haboob by meteorologists, raged for an hour. After that, the water was calm.
