The basic Kindle looked very tempting from a price point. However, I like to read deep in the night and the basic Kindle didn’t have an inbuilt light. A Lighted Leather cover was available, but it cost additional bucks. Also, the screen did not appear uniformly lit up in the product images. Enter the Paperwhite.
OUT OF THE BOX EXPERIENCE:
As soon as I heard of the Kindle Paperwhite, and the ability to read in darkness; I knew this was just the device I wanted. The Paperwhite comes along with a USB charger in the box. There are no buttons anywhere on the Paperwhite except for one on the bottom which allows you to switch off or standby the device. The mini-USB port is located next to this button. There is a minute, almost indiscernible LED in between the button and the port that lights up when you are charging the Kindle.
INTERFACE:
The initial setup for the Wifi is very straightforward, and I was able to connect to my home router without any issues. The Paperwhite contains a user guide which helped me understand the functions. The home screen displays the Wifi and Battery status at the top. Below them are the icons for the Home screen, Back button, Light meter, Kindle Store, Search and Menu. The rest of the space displays the last six books you have read.
You can go into the Menu to manage Wifi, register your device, change date, time, etc. The Light meter allows you to increase or reduce the light. (Higher settings for outdoors and lower settings for dark rooms). The Kindle Store allows you to connect online to the Kindle Store to search and download the book without requiring a computer. Search icon runs a full-text search and results. For both Store and Search, the keyboard pops up when we want to search for something. It’s simple and functional, and does its job without any fuss.
DISPLAY:
The display is unbelievable. It’s uncannily like paper. Even if I bring my eyes a centimeter above the screen, I don’t see any pixelation. If I hold it under a light or outdoors, there’s no glare that reflects back. The product description shows that the Kindle Paperwhite is front-lit, and thus the light goes down towards the book, and not towards our eyes. I have read on the Kindle for more than two hours at a stretch and haven’t had any eye strain or headache.
TOUCH RESPONSE:
The responsiveness of the screen is excellent. You can either swipe across the screen or tap on the right or left sides to go to the next or previous page respectively. If you tap in the top section while reading a book, it gives you the option to go to the home screen, change the lighting, visit the store, etc. It also shows you on the bottom, the number of pages you have read (Location), and the time required to complete the chapter and the book.
BATTERY:
Only one word to describe it. Phenomenal. This is a monster battery that you just can’t seem to kill. Even after using it for 2 hours a day, it still stays good for a couple of weeks. I have been using it for three months now, and I have hardly had to use the charger. My charger is usually locked away in some corner of my house. That’s how less it’s utilized.
INTEGRATION WITH OTHER DEVICES:
It’s amazing that you can read the book not just on your Kindle, but also on your PC or mobile. What is really stunning is that Kindle will keep track of your book location, and will actually prompt you to forward to that page when you go to your PC or mobile and open the Kindle app.
DICTIONARY:
So far my favorite feature. I wish this was possible in print books. Hold your finger over any word for 2 seconds, and the dictionary pops up with its meaning and usage. Really helps you when you are engrossed in a book and an unknown word comes up and you want to know its meaning.
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Have used the chat support and they are always responsive. Amazon has a vision of being earth’s most customer-centric company, and their support is there for you. No major complaints so far.
NOW FOR THE CONS:
No charger: Amazon expects all Kindle owners to have a computer. Or you have to pay an additional 1200/- to buy an adaptor, which I think is ridiculously exorbitant.
Proprietary Amazon AZW format: If I decide to use a non-Amazon e-reader device, I wouldn’t be able to transfer my purchased books to a Nook, Kobo or Reader. Caveat emptor. If you are with Amazon, know that it’s for the long haul.
The display is not as uniformly white as shown in the product images: If you are reading in low light, you will see four LED lights right at the bottom, and a slight shadow covering the bottom 5% of the screen. It’s not a major distraction for me when reading, but just be aware.
BOTTOMLINE:
The Kindle Paperwhite overall is an amazing product, especially with the ability to read in dark, stunning clarity, responsive touch and a monster battery life backed up with good customer service. There are a few minor areas of improvements but nothing that should be a deal breaker. If you love to read books, simply go for it!
The Paperwhite is a really remarkable piece of hardware and without doubt the best Kindle ever made. A little steep in price compared to the US prices but I guess there are a lot of taxes and duties added when it is sold here.
The packaging is superb and just genius. The box itself has a nice amusing sticker which says "Frustration Free Packaging Guaranteed". This has to be the best packaging I've seen on any product, period. I wish more companies follow this. You just tear along one side of the box and it neatly opens up to show the product itself. No unnecessary gimmicks.
The Paperwhite is the first Kindle to come with inbuilt lighting. But unlike the usual tablets/mobiles where the light is directed towards your eyes, the Paperwhite is front lit and the light is directed towards the screen from top, thereby causing your eyes no strain whatsoever. I did see some shadows at the bottom of the screen when the light is increased to maximum, but I can't see why you would ever want to raise it to that level. Even in pitch black conditions, a 50% intensity more than suffices. The text is crisp and clear and the screen is capacitive. The layout of the Kindle software is also very well thought out.
I, like a lot of people, was initially a little apprehensive about getting an eBook reader. I have always liked the feel of real hard books. But I have to say, after using a Kindle for a while I can never go back to reading a normal book! The ability to store hundreds of books on such a small device is so convenient. If you are a voracious reader then you will absolutely love the Kindle. Want to read a newly released book? Just connect the Kindle to a Wifi network, browse the store and purchase it. You will have the book ready in literally seconds.
I would like to see newspapers being launched in India on the Kindle. Can you imagine how convenient that would be? Wake up in the morning to have your favourite paper ready to be read!
Overall, this is a brilliant piece of hardware. And coupled with Amazon's great selection of books and the whole convenience factor, this is a must buy for anyone who loves reading books. Highly recommended!
It has amazing display,

Built-in light(its is super feature): we can read it at night, never worry for power-cut, best useful where power-cut is a big problem.
It battery seems never run-out of power.
Practically I use it daily with 2 hour read and recharge it after 20 days. Amazing is in't.
It is super light more lighter even than any tablet.
We can put it anywhere and never notice due to light weight.
It has lot of space, practically I downloaded 500 book and novel and even it have lot of space.
We can also install our Own READING MATERIAL into it via USB Cable provided with it.
One more thing if anybody wants to buy Kindle Paperwhite wi-fi then it can be purchased at discounted price, at this Indian Ebay where this person is claiming its to be New Like Condition and offering a good price of Rs 8000. Search Ebay for 'Amazon kindle paperwhite'.
