I got two of these , one for a poorly PC and the other for a network HDD enclosure and they have been fantastic, the drives I received are Hitachi Deskstars, so no problems there then as I have used these very reliable drives many times in the past.

Anyone buying these drives has to remember that they are OEM, that means you get no IDE cables, screws or instructions, just a drive in a static bag and very well packed in a foam filled box, also the maker can vary.

I was a little dubious about buying a Generic Hard Drive, but when I opened the box was amazed to see that it was from a major producer of HDD's. What's more it has a three year warranty. The only downside was that I could not find this model on the manufacturers website.

I was probably just unlucky, but when I formatted this supposedly 160 GB drive, it only allowed 30 GB, so completely unfit for purpose. Sent it straight back for a refund.

I bought this drive from the dealer. As far as I was concerned I was getting a no-name new drive. Turns out it was a WD about which I was initially quite happy. However, opening the packet, I thought I detected signs of board corrosion due to humidity, so I thought Id better check the drive out.
Doing a test on it, and looking at the SMART data output showed the drive was not only failing - 38 bad sectors - but also that it had been used for 21077 hours. Yes, that's not a typo - it's over twenty one THOUSAND hours!!!

Do NOT trust your precious data on these drives - they could fail at any time, and most likely are classed as failing. They are clearly not new, and my guess is that they are ripped from old pcs being junked. I was able to scavenge some old database data from the formatted drive, part of a much larger file, indicating they were from perhaps corporate machines.

I had no explanation from the vendor for the age and state of the drive, and though they did refund the purchase price, I was not refunded the postage.

Would I recommend these drives or the vendor? Not a chance, and I believe what they are doing is illegal.

Transaction was doomed from the start, purchased generic hard disk only to be told it will be delivered within 28 days. After waiting that long, i still did not get the item. My advice, be careful of buying anything from the trader if its required urgently. Thanks to amazon's swift handling of complaint, my money was refunded.

I ordered a 160gb hard drive to replace my old one of same size but to my pleasant surprise the delivered product was 250gb. No screws supplied but as I was replacing my old hd I simply used the ones from it to attatch the new drive in the pc casing. All screw holes, ide cable and power cable fitted the existing connections in the pc as expected. Formatting the drive for NTFS took a while but no problems and it is all functioning correctly.
