Joe Wright Drops Out Of The Race To Direct 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

7 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Deadline were pretty miffed last week when other sites went forward with the news that Joe Wright was in the frontrunner position to direct "Fifty Shades Of Grey." It wasn't quite clear what their beef was, other than they didn't get to report it first, and they went on some vague rant about trades "firing a rifle filled with buckshot," when there is nothing Deadline loves more than a good shortlist story. Anyway, they are pretty overjoyed with the latest development. The site has learned that Joe Wright is out of the mix to direct, with scheduling apparently being a problem. It's all early days on the project anyway, with Bennett Miller and Patty Jenkins tossed around as candidates while Gus Van Sant has already made a pitch for the gig by shooting a test sex scene with Alex Pettyfer. Undoubtedly, it's going to be a huge responsibility to whoever takes it on, »

Showrunner Bryan Fuller Talks Hannibal, the Show’s Inception, Gauging the Level of Violence, the Overall Series Plan, Using the Red Dragon Storyline, More

51 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the best written and best acted dramas currently on network (or any) television is Hannibal, from show creator Bryan Fuller.  Based on the characters from Thomas Harris’ classic novels, the series follows the unsettling relationship between psychiatrist-turned-serial-killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and gifted criminal profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, executive producer/writer Bryan Fuller talked about how the series came about, how he gauges the level of violence on the show, how he ended up with Dancy, Mikkelsen and Laurence Fishburne as his lead actors, how fascinating the character relationships are, that knowing the eventual destination of these characters is a huge gift, when Hannibal Lecter’s famous face mask could appear, how the Red Dragon story would come into play in Season 4, adding some female characters to the mix, how they decide what meals Dr. Lecter will prepare and serve, »

Cannes Film Review: ‘Miele’

52 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A young woman assisting the critically ill to commit suicide has a crisis of conscience when a client is existentially, rather than physically, weary in thesp Valeria Golino’s impressively nuanced helming debut, “Miele.” Approaching the delicate theme of euthanasia with restraint, and aided by Gergely Poharnok’s expert lensing, Golino makes the leap into the director’s chair with consummate assurance, drawing out the script’s subtleties with only a few unnecessary glitches while coaxing a topnotch perf from Jasmine Trinca. Middling Italian B.O. following a May 1 opening should be made sweeter by fest and arthouse support.

Also making a feature-length debut, as producer, is Riccardo Scamarcio, dismissed as just a handsome heartthrob when he first began acting but increasingly positioning himself as a talent to watch in front of and behind the screen. Sony Pictures has released the first clip from director M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming sci-fi film After Earth.  The pic stars Will Smith and Jaden Smith as a father and son who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s up to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.  This debut clip shows how all of the action is put into motion, as we see Will Smith’s Cypher Raige (I still can’t get over that character name) explaining to his son that in order to get to the plane’s distress beacon, he will have to travel a very long distance over an incredibly harsh terrain. First Look at NBC's 'Dracula'

1 hour ago | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

The networks are revealing their upcoming schedules this week and with it comes first looks at their new shows. One of the shows I am most looking forward to this fall is NBC's telling of Dracula. Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the titular vampire, NBC's version looks opulent and cinematic, the kind of show that would be more at home on HBO than a broadcast network. That could be because the head of NBC, Bob Greenblatt - who ordered Dracula straight to series without the traditional "let's start with a pilot" step - came from Showtime. With Dracula and Hannibal and midseason's pirate show Crossbones, maybe he is trying to bring a pay-cable aesthetic to a broadcast network.

Anyway, check out the official trailer and synopsis below. Dracula premieres this fall on Fridays at 10pm, following Grimm (which returns to its original 9pm slot).

Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass to Star in Medical Thriller Reawakening

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass are set to team up for a new thriller set within the world of medicine.  Variety reports that Wilde and Duplass will lead Lionsgate's Reawakening, which “follows a team of research students that discovers the secret to bringing subjects back from the dead—however, their actions result in a series of sinister consequences.”  So it’s kind of like a horror film version of Flatliners with more dead people.  Jiro Dreams of Sushi director David Gelb will be taking the helm, with Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater handling scripting duties. Horror guru Jason Blum—who is behind the Paranormal Activity series, Sinister, and a number of other spooktacular films from the past few years—will produce the pic through his Blumhouse banner.  The incredibly busy Duplass recently committed to starring in an HBO comedy pilot that he and his brother Jay Duplass created, and Wilde »

At today's upfronts, Fox released the trailer for their upcoming supernatural procedural Sleepy Hollow. X-Men: Days Of Future Past Set Photo Pairs Wolverine And Beast Back In 1973

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine has already rubbed shoulders with the cast of X-Men: First Class - though it was an extremely brief moment and it didn't exactly go so well. One of the best moments of Matthew Vaughn's period superhero film featured Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Professor X (James McAvoy) trying to recruit Wolverine to their cause in a bar. His response? "Go fuck yourself." But it would appear that ties between the men have changed in the years between First Class and the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, because, as you can see in the image above, Logan is now palling around with Nicholas Hoult's young Beast. As he has been doing regularly, director Bryan Singer released the above set photo on his Twitter account, but this one raises more questions than most. The image came along with the caption "Welcome to 1973. @RealHughJackman @NicholasHoult #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast »

Watch: Cannes Trailer for James Franco's 'As I Lay Dying'

Just before its premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year, the trailer for James Franco's "As I Lay Dying" has emerged. This is Franco's adaptation of William Faulkner's 1930 novel. Franco has written and directed the film and will star as Darl Bundren. Though judging from a trailer is always extrapolating, it seems that his version will be as fiercely character driven as Faulkner's multi-perspective American classic.  In addition to Franco, the movie also stars Danny McBride, Tim Blake Nelson, Beth Grant, Logan Marshall-Green and Ahna O'Reilly. »

Hugh Jackman and Nicholas Hoult Show Off Their 1970s Garb in New Image from the Set of X-men: Days Of Future Past

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director Bryan Singer has shared a new image from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it’s a perfect encapsulation of the mix of new and familiar that the film's story involves.  We see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Nicholas Hoult’s Beast standing side-by-side in Professor X’s familiar underground hallway, but they’re decked out in 1970s clothes given that the year is 1973.  It’s a fantastic tease for fans, as we see that Hoult’s Dr. Hank McCoy has somehow found a way to suppress his Beastly appearance.  Interesting... 'Game of Thrones' 3.7 Recap and Review: 'The Bear and the Maiden Fair'

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

So just getting his hand cut off is not the worst thing that can happen to a guy in George R.R. Martinland, better known as Westeros and its continual neighbors, the backdrop for the still increasingly-great "Game of Thrones." Preparations for two very different weddings are underway, and the characters who aren't on their way to one or the other of them are clarifying their destiny.  Arya makes a somewhat shocking declaration that her "one true god" is death, and Dany, embracing her role as a liberator, decides on an act of conquest that has little strategic significance. Accepting, Iow, the responsibility of great power, even before she has it -- and by doing so, earning it. Stretching a point, perhaps, the increasingly demanding tone Shae is taking with Tyrion is a different kind of slave uprising--the audacity of declaring that you deserve compensation for your service, much less »

Review: 'Fast & Furious 6' Makes Cars Go Boom In A Mostly Satisfactory Way

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Has there ever been a franchise like the "Fast & Furious?" Begun over ten years ago with a film most notable for its '50s-style B-movie title, "The Fast & The Furious," it was a modest sleeper hit. Before long the series saw its biggest draw, the potato-headed growl-monster Vin Diesel, exit the series before it really got going, leading to the Paul Walker solo outing "2 Fast 2 Furious." Unsurprisingly, the box office for that one took a hit, a trend that continued with the Walker-free third outing "The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift." But ever since the series has been on a constant upswing, with "Fast Five" making nearly half-a-billion dollars worldwide, and even winning some critical plaudits, at least for series veteran Justin Lin. Now, Lin's back for his fourth and final entry in the franchise "Fast & Furious 6" ("Saw" helmer James Wan is taking over for the already-greenlit seventh installment, due »

Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, And More Celebrated In Paul Thomas Anderson Mondo Series

We've seen some truly amazing work from the pop culture art gallery Mondo, from the twisty, M.C. Escher-esque Cabin in the Woods design to Bryan Lee O'Mally's Battle Royale inspired work, but now the Austin- based film enthusiasts have set their sights on one of the best contemporary filmmakers we have: Paul Thomas Anderson. Mondo has announced that they have brought together artists Rich Kelly, Rockin' Jelly Bean, Joao Raus, Jordan Crane, and Aaron Horkey to create artistic, creative designs based on the amazing work that Anderson has been producing since the mid-1990s. You'll notice that The Master, the director's latest film, isn't included in this lineup, but that could be explained by the fact that it was just featured in the Oscar race 2012 series that came out this past February.
