Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The nüvi 1390 is an ultra-thin, simple-to-use, widescreen sat-nav with mapping for Europe. It has Lane Assist and Junction View for supreme route awareness. It includes Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone calls, pan-European premium traffic alerts and ecoRoute™ to calculate a more fuel-efficient route. It also comes with Garmin’s unique speed camera warning system to help you drive safely. An optional CityXplorer™ download it will even direct you via public transport (information varies between cities) or give you instructions for walking to your destination so you can use your sat-nav in and out of the car.

Simple navigation

The nüvi 1390 has a clear, intuitive menu so you can just turn it on and go. You simply need to touch the screen to look up addresses and get turn-by-turn directions. It announces street names before you turn so you always know where you are going, for example, “Turn right at Dell Road”.

Comes with lane-assist

Lane Assist helps you get into the correct lane in plenty of time which is particularly useful near busy junctions. It illustrates up to nine lanes in the top left-hand corner of the main map screen, with the distance to the exit and which lanes to take. Junction View gives you an accurate preview of the road signs up ahead on the sat-nav screen together with an illustration of any lane changes required.

Traffic Alerts

Not every traffic service is equal. With Garmin you’ll always know what lies ahead. And it’s subscription-free, for life. The nüvi 1390 has pan-European traffic coverage. In the UK this is based on Trafficmaster data, which has extensive coverage of the road network (100% on motorways in England, Scotland and Wales). With traffic alerts from Garmin you’ll always know how long you’ll be held up and you can choose to be routed around the queues, with your sat-nav directing you all the way.

Great on the go – driving, walking or on public transport

Explore the city with City Explorer

The fact that nüvi 1390 is only 15mm thick means you can take it anywhere. Use to its full potential by downloading cityXplorer™ via www.Garmin.co.uk/cityXplorer to navigate like a local. The enhanced pedestrian mode gives you directions for walking including footpaths and shortcuts through parks – places you wouldn’t be accessing while in your car. It also tells you where to catch trains, buses and tubes (dependent on the city), and how long it will take to reach your destination. cityXplorer even has public transport timetables to ensure you arrive at the station on time and help avoid long waits (dependent on the city).

To make the most of your Garmin sat-nav when exploring a new city, whether on a day trip, a holiday or for business, you can also add an optional AA City Guide. It tells you everything you need to know about your chosen city from attractions and places to eat, hotels and shops.

Make hands free phone calls

Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel with nüvi 1390’s integrated Bluetooth® wireless technology, microphone and speaker. Just pair with your compatible mobile phone and talk hands-free through the nüvi. You can also search for a place of interest on your Garmin nüvi (such as a hotel or restaurant) and call it simply by pressing the telephone icon on your sat-nav’s screen. It means you can stow your phone in your glovebox, bag or pocket and let your sat-nav do the work. To see if your phone is compatible, go to www.garmin.com/bluetooth/phones.

Speed cameras

Turn by turn directions

Garmin has a unique, pan-European speed camera warning system, giving real-time, reliable, and accurate alerts. nüvi 1390 has the location of fixed, average speed, mobile and temporary cameras already built in. New or moved cameras are constantly tracked and the database is updated daily.

Where am I? safety feature

The Where am I? safety feature can be very helpful if you break down or need a certain service urgently. Just tap the car icon on your map screen for your exact coordinates, contact details for vehicle recovery services and directions to hospitals, police and petrol stations.

Anti-Theft feature

You can choose to activate The Garmin Lock™ anti-theft protection system to disable your Garmin sat-nav from performing any functions until a specific 4-digit PIN is typed in or the unit is taken to a predetermined location. Simply enter a 4-digit PIN and select a Security Location.  Write down your PIN and keep it in a safe place.  Each time you turn on the GPS, enter your PIN to unlock the GPS.  If you forget your PIN, you can go to your Security Location. Note: If you forget your PIN, and your Security Location, Garmin cannot unlock your GPS over the phone; you must send your GPS to Garmin to get it unlocked.

Go green with ecoRoute, that helps you plan the most fuel efficient journey

Go Green and save fuel

The ecoRoute™ fuel-saver feature enables you to choose a fuel-efficient route which could save you fuel and money. Simply choose the “less fuel” option and nüvi 1390 will calculate the route which will use the least fuel. You can also see the estimated cost of your journey as you plan it and get scored for your driving performance with the Driving Challenge – good for identifying areas for improvement.

Extras for your Garmin

There are lots of extras you can add to your Garmin sat-nav. These include travel guides such as AA Days Out, The Good Pub Guide, historical audio tours and more. You can also have some fun by adding celebrity voices. If you’re a music fan you may want to download the locations festivals in the UK, or if you want to go on a shopping trip the locations of shopping centres. See www.garmin.co.uk/garminextras for more information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great SatNav, highly recommended, 23 April 2010
    By
Iain Watson "Plasma_Man" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390 Traffic Satellite Navigation System with UK & European Mapping (Electronics)
Bought this a couple of days ago. Due to the volcano cloud, I had to drive from CH to Calais on the north of France and back. My old GPS didn't have Euromaps and was 5 years old so I needed an upgrade

    + Very easy to use
+ Points of interest + favourites work well
+ pedestrian mode works well, finding fuel, shops, money, restaurants in an unusual town is now very easy
    + built quality top
    + voice clear
+ route calcuations very quick, 850km takes 5 secs to calculate
+ Add in a "via" point if you want to detour. When you select a new desitination while driving a current route, it asks if this is a via point or a new destination. (some reviews says it doesn't have this feature???)
+ speed limits displayed, 99% accurate and very handy
+ fixed speed cameras, good to know where they are
+ Distance to go, time to go etc, very accurate
+ Very secure windscreen mount and clasp.
+ At autobahn junctions, display switches to show what lane to be in, picture is very clear and suprisingly accurate. It shows the road signs exactly as they are making it easy to navigate through major junctions/intersections (eg basel border for CH Fr, Ge)

    - Kept repeating a speed camera area, software bug, not sure, had to reset (hold power button 10 secs) put in new route then put original route back in then ok
    - Calculation jammed at 79% when stopping in services, had to do system reset
    - When power cable is plugged in to back, every time you start your car, the GPS powers on, would be better if you powered it on manually.

A great unit, only a couple of small bugs in 16 hrs of driving. Through 3 countries. I don't think any of these are bug free and the problems I had were solved within a few seconds. I took it out the box, stuck it on my windscreen and drove 1000 miles. No need to read instructions as long as you have a little bit of common sense. I would recommend this unit 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this rather than a Tomtom - and very glad I did !, 4 July 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390 Traffic Satellite Navigation System with UK & European Mapping (Electronics)
I bought this Garmin product a couple of months ago, having had TOMTOMs (and 1 Garmin)in the past. I deliberately waited a while before reviewing it to put it through its paces. I have mainly been a Tomtom user but my latest Tomtom (Europe XL) was nicked from the car! so I needed a new unit. I was a quite disappointed in the tomtom, particulalry since the batteries would flatten if it wasn't used for a few days then would take a few moments to spring into life - very poor really and not unheard of apparrently. So... this time I bought a GARMIN. This model is much much much more improved than my earlier Garmin. It is easy to use (the wife got the hang of it in no time), fires up quickly, retains its charge, speaks street names and road numbers (wow - how good is that - it's brilliant). Never thought I'd use Bluetooth for my phone, but hey... its so easy I don't know how I managed without it. I could rave on and on about this unit, but you probably get the picture by now (I give it 10/10). The ultimate endorsement is that both of my lads, who both have Tomtoms, are thinking about ditching their Tomtoms and buying a Garmin - can't be bad can it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine- really works well, 11 Nov 2010
This review is from: Garmin Nuvi 1390 Traffic Satellite Navigation System with UK & European Mapping (Electronics)
I bought this for a marketing trip in which we were to visit 120 shops throughout the UK in a 2 week period (Poole to Inverness, Canterbury to Menai Bridge). So a pretty extensive undertaking, we were to be on our own in the car for the majority of the time and although I am a confident driver I had never driven in the UK previously. If it wasn't for this sat nav it wouldn't have worked!

We had opportunity to compare it as we hired the second unit from the car hire company. The unit we hired was an older Garmin. It was not wide screen and didn't have traffic knowledge or bluetooth. I have to say this machine was vastly superior in its navigation. We each had highly frustrating situations with the hired one in which we simply couldn't find our way- telling us to turn where there were no roads/one way roads. Taking us repeatedly on and off packed motorways, ambiguous directions etc. This NEVER happened with this machine. Well, there was the odd ambiguous direction, but I think this was more of a reflection of the crazy lane changing required to get to the correct motorway, and lack of concentration- than the fault of our machine.

It has a brilliant thing in the top left corner that tells you how far to the next change and a small easily understood diagram of what that change is going to be. The speed limit is really handy- British roads are NOT well signposted. They have the Limitied Speed Zone sign everywhere telling you its open road, BUT the open road speed limit changed depending on if you are on a motorway, country road or and highway... So although it is very occasionally wrong- it is very handy. It even knew that there was a temporary change in speed at most of the road works! I think that was actually why it was wrong a couple times- might have been a previous decrease in speed limit that no longer applies.

I did get the plug charger as an extra and this turned out to be handy. I charged it when we first got it. Didn't do any upgrades online. Then used it for 5-10 hours each day. By the middle of the second week it died on me! Turns out that although I plugged it in each time I used it the charge gradually decreased. So this was solved by a night of charging- all good to go!!

SO I would say get this one. I deliberated over the cheaper ones but am very happy that I chose this one. The wide screen is great! The bluetooth is ok- works fine although not as good as some. It has loads of helpful stuff like where the nearest petrol stations are and will divert your route. The ladys voice is quite smooth- unlike others that I have heard. It is clear and accurate and understands traffic so will divert you.

    Have fun!
