Could not put this book down,
By Louiseog (Britain) - See all my reviews

What would be a great thriller has an added twist with the narrator of this story who has tried to save her daughter in a fire. We know from the first page (so its not a spoiler) that she is talking to her husband while her body lies in a coma. Grace can follow the investigation into the arson attack although no-one can hear her and the development of the story is detailed and well thought out.
I am not a fan of ghost stories but this was not one and was an excellent twist on an excellent story. What is a thrilling thriller has emotion added due to this format. And I wept at the end! Or I would have done if I had not been dishing up tea with the book in my hand - couldn't put it down! Definitely a book of the year for me.

Unputdownable,
By Yorkshire Rose (Leeds) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Afterwards (Kindle Edition)
I downloaded this book on the day of release but I can say with some trepidation as, although I loved 'Sister', I felt a little let down by the end of that due to the twist and was wary that Rosamund Lupton would do the same again.
However, I wasn't disappointed at all; I can thoroughly recommend this book but be prepared to have tissues to the ready. I was deeply moved by the whole concept of this story but I struggled a little at first with the fact that Grace was talking to Mike, during her out of body experience, and at times I found this a little confusing in the beginning as I had to keep going back to make sure I was fully aware of who she was talking to. Having said that when I eventually got my head around it I literally could not put it down. I was totally and utterly hooked and desperately wanted to find out who had started the fire and why (albeit I had my suspicions from a clue in the early part of the book but wasn't entirely sure I was right and why this person would commit such a terrible act)and what would happen to Grace, Jenny and the gorgeous little Adam. Sarah became my hero due to the fact that she became so utterly engrossed in trying to find the arsonist etc, and that Grace's love and admiration for her grew. This is certainly desperately moving and as I turned the last page I felt utterly bereft that I wouldn't be reading about this lovely family's love and life any more: it felt so real to me. I didn't want it to end.

This book has become one of the most moving and beautiful books I have ever read. Despite the inevitability of the ending the twists and turns made this an exciting read. The journey Lupton takes us on is heartbreaking and so real. I sobbed at the end and have thought about it for days afterwards. This book will stay with you for a long time after you have finished it.
