Thought long and hard before choosing a netbook for my daughter. I was worried that the Atom processor and 1GB of RAM might make it underpowered for the types of applications she uses - MS office, youtube, bbc iplayer and lots of flash based online games (eg Club Penguin, cbbc games).

I needn't have done so; The full version of Office 2010 loads and runs well to allow her to do homework and emails and graphics heavy apps such as the aforementioned games also run well. I also loaded up a couple of ripped movies in MP4 format and these too play well in itunes.
I suspect anything which is in recorded in HD may be too much for smooth viewing, but this is not an issue for us.
I loaded microsoft security essentials and this has proven to be a very effective but "resource light" security suite for free. Windows 7 starter edition is robust, and we almost always wake the device from hibernate (which takes about 10 seconds) rather than shut down and re-start. Only minor disappointment so far has been a "feature" of windows 7 starter, namely that one cannot change the desktop picture. Haven't tried it yet (and don't intend to) in Android.

The machine is well designed with lots of connectivity, a very nice bright screen and a solid keyboard. The 6 cell battery gives lots of life (>6 hours). We also bought a matching lime green mouse, which my daughter likes, thought the trackpad also works well.

All in all a very good choice and, 2 months in, I am very happy with the choice we made.

I wanted to buy a Netbook and browsed my local store but could not get the all important colour...red...! I came home and checked Amazon reading the reviews carefully and noted the negative ones in particular. I must admit, I have not found any of the problems mentioned by other buyers, I think this Netbook is pretty perfect.
It is neat, light, has plenty of storage, is not slow as some reviewers suggested, and the battery life is fine. Obviously if you are using it for a few hours you will have to recharge but for my purpose which is a secondary 'laptop' to my main one which stores my photos etc I couldn't have asked for a better model, and it is a gorgeous shade of red...!
To browse the net, check e mails, watch tv, store photos I love my little Acer Netbook...my laptop is also Acer and I have never had a problem with it.
I am a very happy bunny!

I bought this product for my daughter for christmas because I work away from home. I have now gotten back and she says this product keeps freezing all the time after it has been kept on for 2 to 3hours, causing her to have to constantly restart it.

After reading some of the other reviews I purchased this netbook.

Once it arrived I booted into Windows 7 Starter and immediately uninstalled the McAfee anti-virus software plus the trial Office 2010. I then installed my own open-source office suite and freeware anti-virus software. This is due to McAfee having a habit of making computers unusable by hogging the CPU. I have yet to uninstall more applications but will do if they annoy me.

I then installed Google Chrome as an alternative browser after getting fed up of Internet Explorer freezing and crashing if I opened more than one tab. This fault is probably caused by the 1GB of RAM that comes with the netbook as the other PCs/laptops I use all have at least 2GB meaning there are no such issues. I am aware many people have upgraded their RAM to 2GB but if you don't use Internet Explorer as your browser, uninstall McAfee and don't use Office 2010 you can probably get away without it.

Windows 7 takes a long time to boot and be usable on any PC/laptop and there is no difference for Windows 7 Starter. Linux-based operating systems like Ubuntu now boot and become usable much quicker than Windows 7, and so Android boots much faster than Windows 7 Starter. So it's ashame there are so many flaws with this netbooks version of the Android operating system.

The first flaw you will find is that there was no Android Market App. Apparently the Android Market App only comes with hardware approved by Google. (You can however download the source code and compile it yourself but I've not tried this.) After a bit of googling I found instructions on how to install another Market App which gives some applications but not the wide range that Android Market has. In addition you can only configure webmail to have one Gmail account. This is annoying as I have several and can access them all on my Android phone. Obviously I can use the browser but this is not the point. The final annoying thing is that the Android operating system is 2.1 and there is no indication when Acer will have a 2.2 version out.

As someone who touch types I found the keyboard fine to type on and the mouse pad adequately responsive. One final main issue I should mention is the amount of heat this netbook generates. While Amazon recommends memory upgrades, netbook sleeves and a DVD writer they forget to include a portable lap desk in a bundle with this netbook. This is essential for a lot of people as this netbook gets very hot during use. If you want to use this netbook on your lap infront of the TV then a portable lap desk would be a good idea, particularly if you are male. If you don't purchase one then when you are using the netbook don't use it on a cushion and keep the fans clear.

All in all I would say this netbook is good value for money if you don't expect anything special.

The new generation seems to like everything with keyboards, screens, functions undreamed of in my childhood. And so it is with my grandson. He seems a bit disappointed in its inability to handle all his games which seem to devour memory, etc. But he's delighted with webcam and its capacity to conduct conversations with friends and family abroad. He hopes to use it in Russia when he visits his other grandmother. I(the wallet) accompanied him to a couple of techie shops where his articulate enquiries about memory, capacity, battery life for applications he has in mind were taken very seriously.

Luckily he also has access to a reconditioned laptop and desktop for the monster games, but is delighted with his new technology gift. I rather fancy one myself but I don't have a gran to supply it.
