Why isn't six stars possible?,

This review is from: The Eagle of The Ninth (Paperback)
I have to declare a vested interest from the outset. Eagle of the Ninth was one of the first historical fiction books I can remember reading as a child, and it instilled in me a great love of all things Roman. When wanting to change career from that of a veterinarian to a writer, Eagle of the Ninth helped inspire me to write Roman fiction.
Quite simply, this, in my opinion, is one of the best historical fiction books ever written. Suitable for all ages from 8 or so upwards, it is a stirring read about the pursuit of honour in the face of great danger. Thoroughly recommended. Ben Kane, author of The Forgotten Legion.

The tale of a brave but lonely Roman soldier, set in Britain,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Eagle of the Ninth (Paperback)
The book starts by following the career of a young Roman soldier, Marcus, who has been posted to Britain. After his ambitions are shattered, he finds warmth from some unexpected friendships and is called upon to undertake a great adventure when his life appeared to be over. His task, to save Roman rule in Britain, solve the mystery of the missing 9th legion and most importantly, salvage his father's honour. This book is a fantastic adventure story, moving and vividly imaginative. I first read it aged about 8 and have reread it every few years ever since. I think it moves me more each time I reread it. The writing is simple but beautiful. The starkness of life in those times is not ignored but it is also a celebration of friendship. Very highly recommended.

Marvellous book, and you learn some history,
By Batsheep (Rugby, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Eagle of the Ninth (Junior Classics) (Audio CD)
The Eagle of the Ninth is a tremendous tale, based round the genuine mystery of the Ninth legion, lost in Britain in the 2nd century AD. A young centurion and his servant, a celt, travel north of Hadrian's Wall to try and discover what became of the legion. There's mystery and fighting, but it's also a story about friendship and trust. Rosemary Sutcliff has written many excellent historical novels for children, but this is one of her best.
I have to be honest and admit I haven't heard this recording. I would give it 5 stars as the story is so good but it just can't be as good as the BBC full cast dramatisation, sadly only available on a double tape (ISBN 0-563-38920-6) which has been listened to countless times by my youngest (from ages 6-8) and 2 or 3 times by the rest of us (now aged 43, 42, 12 and 10) in the car. Only my daughter (10) isn't that keen to hear it again. One note of caution, Amazon claims this to be suitable for ages 4-8. I'd have thought that under 6s would struggle listening to it and it most suitable for over 10s to read it to themselves.
