In 1930, at the age of 23, Blackburn-born Alfred Wainwright came for the first time to the Lake District. Thus began his lifelong love affair with the area, a union which would in time produce over forty books.
Wainwright originally self-published his lovingly handwritten seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, which has since sold over a million copies. The series took him thirteen years of painstaking research, charting and writing, but it brought him great joy – perhaps greater even than that of the fellwanderers who follow in his footsteps.
