Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Fujifilm's new 18x superzoom is ideal for those who want more flexibility and zoom range than a compact can offer, but don't want the expense and bulk of a DSLR. The FinePix S1800 has a hugely versatile Fujinon 18x zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens, HD capture and manual photographic controls and gives users the freedom for photographic creativity. However, for those whose approach to photography is point-and-shoot, then the S1800 can be left on Auto for total ease-of-use.

Fujinon 18x Optical Zoom & 12 Megapixels
The combination of a high precision Fujinon Lens and astounding 12 megapixel resolution will reveal impressive picture quality. The versatile 18x, 28mm wide-angle lens gives extra photographic reach across a wide range of subjects, from everyday snap shots to capturing the wonders of a family holiday.

Dual Image Stabilisation combats
camera shake and subject movement
to deliver blur-free photos

Effective Anti-blur System
By combining high ISO sensitivity settings and CCD shift technology the S1800 is able to reduce the effect of camera shake and subject movement to deliver virtually blur-free photos, even when shooting at the massive 18x zoom.

Good Low-light Performer
Photos taken in low light are often the most disappointing. The S1800 features impressive ISO sensitivity to 3200* meaning it is ultra-sensitive in dim conditions and able to record impressive detail and true to life colours with minimal noise. You can also select the ISO settings manually, so if it's a nice, bright sunny day you can select a low ISO (e.g. 100), or if conditions are dark, high ISO settings will be better at picking up detail.
*Number of recorded pixels is limited to maximum 3 megapixels. At full resolution sensitivity is limited to a maximum ISO1600.

HDTV-Compatible Photos & Video
Capture both photos and movies (720p) in HD format and bring your memories to life. The FinePix S1800 lets you discover the impact of full-screen HDTV image display in the comfort of your home.
*Optional HD Player HDP-L1 is required to view photos and movies on HDTVs.

Tracking Auto Focus
Ideal when photographing fast moving subjects or action shots, Tracking AF will 'lock on' to moving subjects and keep them in focus. Simply half press the shutter button and Tracking AF will track and keep focus on your subject. As soon as you fully press the shutter button you will capture a photo with the subject perfectly in focus.

Panoramic Shooting stitches up to
three photos together in camera resulting
in one impressive panoramic shot

Panoramic Shooting Mode
This mode is great for capturing sweeping landscapes or large group shots. Simply take three consecutive photos of your chosen scene and the camera will seamlessly stitch them together to create one impressive panoramic image and save it straight to the memory card.

Instant Zoom
A selectable frame on the LCD lets you bracket and track moving subjects in standard wide view and will save it as a cropped image.

Zoom Bracketing Mode
Enables three shots to be taken at the single press of the button, at varying degrees of magnification (original, 1.4x and 2.0x). This enables instant editing on the camera to choose the ideal shot, rather than having to go back to a PC to facilitate a digital crop.

Scene Detection Technology
The FinePix S1800 can detect up to six commonly photographed scenes and optimises focus, exposure and white balance to suit the scene being shot. The scenes it can recognise are: Portrait, Landscape, Night, Macro, Night Portrait, Backlit Portrait.

Smile Everyone!
Smile Detection will automatically take a photo as soon as a smile is detected ensuring all your pictures are happy ones.

Blink Detection
This fun new feature alerts the user of people blinking in a picture so you have the chance to retake the photo with everyone's eyes open and looking at the camera.

Natural Light and with Flash
Can't decide whether flash is required? Choose this mode, press the shutter and automatically capture the same scene twice: once with high sensitivity and natural light, and the second time with Intelligent Flash. Later choose one or keep both!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent in almost every way, 23 July 2010

I got this a while back and have been using it for my GCSE photography course, the automatic mode is usable by even the biggest technophobes ! and the manual allows for fully customisable settings. The 18x optical zoom is truely quite something indeed! beautiful clarity and smooth zooming, i managed to jam the switch but after flicking it about (literally) 5000 times it loosened up and is now fine.

the scene selection is nice if you dont want to manually configure it, and the shutter is very smooth and reliable. ranging from 1/2000 to 8 seconds! the HD (720p) recording is excellent and allows you to zoom while recording. (mind you'll want to get a big memory card to record for long times) i have heard this accepts 16gb sdhc cards (but not entirely sure) with a 16gb card you can store about 70 mins of HD video at full res and about 35mins with an 8gb. the fast shooting mode is immense... approx 8 photos per second for 20 images! (hiwever in quite low res) and sustained shooting can keep going until you fill your memory card! the screen is fantastic quality, and the EVF can be set to 60fps making it completely smooth and lag free. The batteries that come with it are pretty lame, however i bought 4 rechargable ones (2500mah) and they seem to last for ever! i use this alot and i have gone about 3 weeks without needing to charge them!!! over all brilliant

oh and the panorama mode works amazingly well!

    5.0 out of 5 stars S1800 Fujifilm, 21 Aug 2010
This review is from: Fujifilm FinePix S1800 Digital Camera (12MP,18x Wide Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD (Electronics)
I've had this camera for 2 weeks now and I think it's great. I haven't discovered everything about it yet but getting to grips with the basics.

After looking at many cameras reviews I decided on the Fujifilm because I do like their cameras. This feels great in your hands, it's not compact where you can just put it in your pocket but I manage to take it everywhere with me including Tesco.

I am a keen bird watcher and the zoom on this camera is superb. It has 18x optical zoom which is plenty for garden birds and general use.
One great thing about it, that is better than any other camera I've had, is that it performs amazingly in low light, even without the flash.

    Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Camera, 26 July 2010

This review is from: Fujifilm FinePix S1800 Digital Camera (12MP,18x Wide Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD (Electronics)
This is my second Fujifilm Finepix bridge camera, bought to update my old S5700 which was 7 megapixels with 10x zoom. This newer model has many of the same great features as my older model, but with very significant improvements. The screen is larger and clearer, the camera has greater light sensitivity and has a new panorama mode which is great. I also like the more manual flash as it means there is no need for the natural light mode. The main reason however why I bought the S1900 is the lens. Mainly because it is much more wide angle, (5mm compared with 6.2 on my S5700). This is equivalent to a 28mm lens on a DSLR. The 18x zoom means the lens goes upto 90mm (compared to 62mm on my older camera). This is equivalent to a 500mm lens on a DSLR. Another feature that I like on this camera is that it uses 4 AA batteries. While the included alkalines do not last long, a set of 2100 mah NiMH rechargeables last a long time. I prefer standard size batteries because it is cheap and easy to replace them unlike the dedicated batteries found in most higher end digital cameras.

There are a few less good points. My old S5700 lens did not extend out as you zoomed, which allowed you to add filters and even an add on wide angle converter. The S1900 lens extends out as you zoom and presumabaly for this reason does not have a thread for filters etc. However I never actually used a filter on the old camera and as the S1900 lens is naturally more wide angled than that on the S5700, plus the panorama function means that this really is not a problem at all. The video quality is OK but not a match for a dedicated digital camcorder (miniDV). The autofocus seems to struggle with focus (found the same on the S5700). Also the sound quality is poor, and is noticeably worse if you select the 16:9 HD setting rather than 4:3 SD setting. Again however for most home use the quality is OK and easier than lugging both a camera and camcorder around when travelling.

Given that you can manually control the shutter speed, ISO and appature I feel that unless you are a professional photographer this camera does all you would ever need and is a better bet than a DSLR. Yes I know the DSLR have physically bigger lens' which helps resolution, and use CMOS ranther than smaller CCD sensors, but in truth the difference in quality of any photos produced would be hard to spot for any but the the fussiest. Given how much even a the cheapest DSLR would cost, plus a 500mm zoom and a 28 mm wide angle lens added, a camera like the S1900 is a better bet for the kean non professional photographer.
