Book Description

An absorbing look at a year in the life of the UK's most famous farmer.

From the Inside Flap

Adam Henson is the best-known farmer in the UK. After 8 years as a roving presenter on Britain's most watched countryside show, Countryfile, he now presents his own section of the programme from his farm every Sunday. But after the TV crews leave, Adam returns to the job he loves most - working the land and looking after his livestock. This book is a searchingly honest account of the highs and lows of a year of life on the farm.

It begins with the joy of new life - lambs in March. But the constant battle against TB is always at the forefront of Adam's mind - a positive test could mean the slaughter of his animals and financial disaster. And as a promising spring turns into a wet summer, Adam falls behind with his harvest and the year begins to look more grim.

Adam inherited not just the farm from his father, Joe, but also his passion for farming. Imagination is essential for the farm's survival and Adam has many an entertaining tale as he explores new sources of income. He explains his commitment to rescuing breeds from extinction, the aspect of the farm that is perhaps closest to his heart, as well as the money-spinning work of hiring oxen out to film directors and training pigs to sit on Hollywood stars.

Life on the land is unpredictable, emotional and varied, but never dull, and in this frank book, Adam shows us what a farmer's life is really like.

I like watching Adam every week on Countryfile and as I'm 'From Farming Stock' thoroughly enjoyed his book. There are lots of informative details even for the 'townie' who wants to read his story.
I just wish they would give him his own programme!

Countryfile: Adam's Farm: My Life on the LandIf you enjoy the "Adam's Farm" slot in BBC1's "Countryfile", then this book is for you. If you haven't ever seen it, then prepare to be entranced! Adam takes readers through a year on his mixed Cotswolds farm, with all its ups and downs. He has a lovely easy style - just like he has on television. His speciality is rare breeds, and his great love of his animals is obvious throughout the book. Some great colour photos complete the picture. An inspiring book for all country lovers.

This was a birthday present for my husband. As a farmer himself, and having watched Adam on the television, he really enjoyed reading his book. In fact, he found it difficult to put down.

I've attended one of Adam Henson's extremely interesting presentations, where this book was on sale, but I paased on buying one at the time. He's a lovely genuine and humorous man, with a huge enthusiasm for farming, and the countryside in general, so I looked forward to reading this book. That same enthusiasm came through in bucket-loads in the book, and there were lots of bits of information that I picked up along the way, both about farming, the Rare Breeds Park (which I visited many years ago, when it probably not been open for long), and the Countryfile programme, in which Adam plays such a large part. The only thing was - and this is in no way a criticism but a mild warning - Adam is a farmer, not a writer. As such, his writing is simple and straightforward, not sophisticated, which some readers might find frustrating or even irritating. A very enjoyable read, though, plus some great photos.

I really enjoyed this book which gives a proper insight into farming in the UK. I spent most of my childhood in Rhodesia so found this really enlightening. The way Adam Henson writes is easy to understand and a pleasure to read.

Adam gives a detailed, but very interesting account of his life on the farm in the Cotswold. Not only this he gives background information and detail on the decisions needed to be made in running not only a country park, rare breed animals, but a viable arable farm. This arable farm is the back bone of his income.

Behind these very interesting details, shines through his love of his family, and the love of the very many breeds he has on his farm.

He is rightly proud of his fathers work in starting the enterprise, and has him still in the background giving when asked seniors advice!

As a West Country boy I find his book very interesting and informative.

I had to enlarge my print on the kindle, but worth doing it.
