The second novel, and first quick read title, from bestselling author Cathy Glass.
My Dad's a Policeman is a dramatic and engaging story of a young boy with an alcoholic mother and no knowledge of his father. Lonely, bullied and desperate for a life of happiness and security he tells everyone he meets his dad's a policeman.
Fast-paced and compelling, this short story from Cathy Glass follows the experiences of a Ryan, a small and lonely 12-year-old boy who struggles to fit in. In an attempt to make friends, and discourage the school bullies from picking on him, Ryan tells his peers that his dad is a policeman. When the police actually turn up on Ryan's doorstep, to take him away from his alcoholic mother and put him in care, his life crumbles.
It's not long before Ryan has run away, taking a long bus ride back across the city, desperate to get back to the inner-city life he knows. Keeping a low profile, and sneaking in to his best friend's house late a night for shelter, he soon discovers that he's not the only one who appears to be stretching the truth about the happiness of his home life.
Cathy has been a foster carer for over 20 years, during which time she has looked after more than 50 children, of all ages and backgrounds. Cathy runs training courses on fostering for her local Social Services, and helps draft new fostering procedures and guidelines. She has three teenage children of her own; one of whom was adopted after a long-term foster placement. The name Cathy Glass is a pseudonym.

A gem of a book,
By
This review is from: My Dad's a Policeman (Quick Reads 2011) (Paperback)
Ryan lives with his mother and younger brother on a run down council estate.
Ryan's mum is an alcoholic and can't look after them. Suddenly Ryan and his brother are taken into care and separated to live with different foster carers. The book is about Ryan's efforts to find his brother so that they can live together as before. Cathy tells the story in the voice of the 12 year old Ryan. Although the book is shorter than her memoirs it certainly packs the action in! Very enjoyable and the update on Cathy's website is a must.

a lovely story
This is the first Cathy Glass book I have read, and I was riveted, I could not put it down. I really enjoyed the story, even though it was quite sad at times.

I thoroughly enjoy Cathy Glass books, this was a disappointing ending even if it is a short story, cant really grumble as the price of the book was cheap.

Good Read but feel short changed
Good quick read, though it does pack a punch in and gives all details, compared to other books by same author it almost feels like they are 'shortchanging' Ryan.

My Dad's a policeman
Clever perspective. The foster care procedure written from an angry child's point of view. Short but great story. A must read!
