‘The Hobbit’ Will Start Filming This March

21 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Among the issues that have plagued development of The Hobbit in recent memory: financing troubles [1] due to studio bankruptcy; a major directorial change [2] after years of delays; actors boycotting the production [3]; a thankfully avoided [4] location change from New Zealand; the firey destruction [5] of one of Peter Jackson's workshops; and most recently, a perforated ulcer [6] that cost the director a trip to the hospital and the film its February start date. It's with all this in mind that it gives me great pleasure to announce that finally, at long last, cameras are set to begin rolling on The Hobbit in March. (Rejoice.) Read some quick, hopeful words from director Peter Jackson, along with a full list of the confirmed cast, after the break. Many wondered whether Peter Jackson's recent health troubles would cost the films their planned December 2012/2013 release dates, but fear not. His surgery may have caused "a »

6 minutes ago | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Birmingham, Alabama isn’t usually thought of as a place where indie movies are made, but upcoming indie director John M. Ware intends to make it big by featuring the Magic City as a zombie wasteland. His film, ”Thr33 Days Dead”, will be his first foray into the world of filmmaking. Ware said that his career in filmmaking started as a suggestion from a friend. “It wasn’t until several years of college that someone suggested that I do something creative, then they said you like movies why don’t you try that. Invasion of the neds – at a cinema near you

17 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Disruptive teenagers are flocking to screenings of the new film Neds, which depicts gang life in 1970s Glasgow

Perhaps it's a compliment, of sorts: some Scottish screenings of Peter Mullan's new film Neds, about a bright teenager, John McGill, who ends up in a gang in 1970s Glasgow, have been so disrupted by exactly the kinds of teenagers the film portrays that security guards have had to be posted in the aisles.

The etymology of the word "neds" – Scots version of Teddy boys? Adaptation of Ned Kelly? Contraction of ne'er-do-well? A backronym (or retroactively applied acronym) for "Non-Educated Delinquent"? – is endlessly debated online, but it is generally agreed to describe working-class youths with a tendency to gang violence and petty crime – and it is these youths who have flocked to see the film.

"It has been a nightmare," one staff member at Cineworld told the Scotsman, after an incident in which the shouting, »

Lindsay Lohan: Supergirl. Oh, God.

26 minutes ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

TMZ has come up with some real doozies in their day, but this one takes the cake: according to a new report on the muckraking website, Lindsay Lohan is in discussions to play a “major character” in the new “Superman” reboot.

And here you thought Mr. Mxyzptlk had cornered the market on practical jokes.

Here’s the whole scoop: while these unnamed sources wouldn’t name the character, they did confirm that the role was not Lois Lane, which jibes with other reports that Superman’s main squeeze would not be the focus of the new version starring Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel. Just who Lohan would be playing — Supergirl? Lana Lang? Martha Kent? — is still up in the air, but whoever it is, Lohan is said to be excited for the chance to “show people again how talented she is.”

But while there’s no denying Lohan’s talent, »

Secrets Behind the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Franchise Reveal Epic Proportions

28 minutes ago | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Dreamworks Animation reached near-Pixar levels of quality this year with their touching boy-and-his-pet story “How to Train Your Dragon,” which recently swept up at the 38th Annual Annie Awards. But unlike Pixar, Dreamworks is not content with leaving a successful property as a one-off. Grossing over $500 million at the box office, “How to Train Your Dragon” is only the first in what sounds to be a ginormous (real word) franchise.

Hollywood Reporter spoke to Dean DeBlois, director of the original film, at the Annie Awards and he expanded on the proposed sequel. “It’s going to be quite epic. We are treating How To Train Your Dragon as the first act in a much larger story. As we head into this one, the world expands.”

Unlike the “Shrek” series, which had additional installments tacked on every time a film wracked up millions, DeBlois has already conceived and written the “Dragon »

'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' Super Bowl Spot: Optimus Prime Can Fly!

30 minutes ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Over the years, Optimus Prime has taken many forms: big rig truck, techno-organic ape… the list goes on. But in the "Transformers" movies from Michael Bay, Optimus has relied on his familiar truck mode when transforming into vehicle form – though it appears that this is changing, at least partially, for "Dark of the Moon," the third installment in Bay's series.

In the 30-second spot that aired during the Super Bowl, "Transformers" fans may have noticed a moment where the Autobots' esteemed leader swoops down into battle with what looks like wings or a jet pack strapped to his back. What's the deal with that? My first thought was that this was a residual effect of Prime's merging with Jetfire in the final act of "Revenge of the Fallen," but the eagle-eyed folks at io9 have unearthed a different explanation altogether.

According to them, if you're looking to understand why Prime »

Watch: Elle Fanning In Short 'The Curve Of Forgotten Things' Featuring Original Score By Deerhunter

For the most part, fashion-inspired films or advertising, usually focus on bizarre fantasies played out in the wealth and glamor of metropolitan settings. Not so, this time around. In the short film, "The Curve Of Forgotten Things" for fashion house Rodarte, director Todd Cole simply follows star Elle Fanning around as she floats through fields and the historic Baldwin House in an array of beautiful clothing. Wondering why the pic looks as good as it does? It was shot on Red utilizing Cooke lenses from the 1970s, helping evoke the dreamy feel of the short. That sentiment is also helped… »

First Details On Sequel To 'How To Train Your Dragon' Emerge

56 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Much to our surprise, we flat-out loved last year's "How To Train Your Dragon," easily the best film so far to emerge from DreamWorks Animation. Indeed, this writer put the film--a thrilling, moving, beautifully crafted piece of entertainment--on his Top 10 list for 2010. With the picture taking a handsome $500 million worldwide, it's no surprise that sequel-happy DreamWorks swiftly green-lit a follow-up, to be helmed by the co-director of the original, Dean DeBlois. DeBlois is currently at work on a second draft of the screenplay, which will draw on more of the nine books in Cressida Cowell's series that… »

‘The Prodigies’ Teaser Trailer – Superpowered Teenagers Destroy NYC in This French Animated Film

56 minutes ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

What the hell is The Prodigies? That's a question I'd very much like to have answered myself. Prior to the teaser trailer, I hadn't heard a thing about this 3D animated film from France, but now it's quickly become one of my more anticipated movies of the year. The film is based on Bernard Lenteric's early '80s novel of the same name (French title: La nuit des enfants rois), and centers around a group of gifted teenagers whose past traumas cause them to wreak havoc against the world -- and the one person capable of putting a stop to their revenge. Watch the immensely cool teaser trailer after the break. Within a period of 60 seconds, The Prodigies teaser (found via Twitch Film [1]) injects enough swirling camera movements and city-wide destruction -- all hypnotically set to "Exogenesis Symphony Pt 1: Overture" by Muse -- to get any action aficionado salivating and longing for more. »

Anton Yelchin To Star In Stephen Sommers' 'Odd Thomas'

It's been clear ever since his debut in the otherwise weak "Hearts in Atlantis" that Anton Yelchin was destined to be a pretty big star. Across films like "Alpha Dog," "Fierce People," "Charlie Bartlett" and the unjustly neglected TV series "Huff," Yelchin's blended nerdiness and charisma with ease, and he's moved into tentpole territory in recent years with the only performance with a pulse in "Terminator: Salvation," and as part of the ensemble in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek." The actor has got a busy 2011 ahead of him, with the indie "Like Crazy" proving to be the talk of Sundance,… »
